Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Technically they do.

I mean, failing to do something is still doing something, and you can learn from that failure and be better...in theory.

Anyone else hoping they bring in John Walker, the U.S. Agent?

It be a pretty good time especially to play off against Sam & Bucky.

I don't know if it's official but I believe a description for The Falcon and Winter Soldier suggested as much, that it'd be about someone claiming the name of Captain America which the two have to reclaim the name from. If not John Walker, then likely William Burnside.

Agents of SHIELD already used Jeffrey Mace (to great effect, too), so yeah, either William Burnside or John Walker.

I'll be interested to see how well the Bucky/Falcon movie does. Considering it's based on two decidedly supporting players (up to now) in the MCU.

[up][up][up][up], [up][up][up] So Ultimate Captain America then? tongue

[up][up] They are getting a TV show, not a movie. Though a show with a movie level budget apparently.

Different people who went by the name "Captain America."

  • After Cap went into the ice, post-World War II, the US Government decided that they didn't want people to know that him or Bucky were dead, so they basically chose two different people and changed their appearance so they looked like Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes and gave them a version of the Super Soldier Serum that turned out to be...not that stable. This was the infamous "Commie Smasher Cap" of the 1950s, which was initially meant to be Steve, but when Stan Lee brought him back in the pages of Avengers, he was retconned into being someone else. Later on, Commie Smasher Cap was brainwashed and made into the Grand Director of National Force, a Neo-Nazi organization. Later on, his name was revealed to be "William Burnside" and he came back to fight Bucky Cap during the "Two Americas" storyline. Last seen having been shot multiple times by Bucky and falling into the water.
  • John Walker, on the other hand, became Captain America after the government fired Steve for not following orders, basically. Walker had been a hero called "Super Patriot," but he was pretty violent and had gotten into fights with Cap, but they offered him the job anyway. (They were being manipulated by the Red Skull.) As Captain America, he was way more angry and violent than regular — I would call him a parody of the edgy '90s vigilantes, except this happened in 1987 — and eventually Watchdogs killed his parents and he ended up killing his former sidekicks who leaked his name to the press in retaliation. After it was revealed that the whole thing was a manipulation by the Red Skull, he was fired and Steve was rehired, but Walker went on to become US Agent. He's been a member of Force Works and even the Avengers occasionally, but he's generally characterized by his excessive use of force and willingness to kill. Eventually, he became Warden of the Raft after losing an arm, but then regained the arm (don't ask) and went back to being an agent for the US government. He was last seen fighting against Sam Wilson as Cap, since Hydra Cap asked him to.

Also between Steve Rogers in 1945 and William Burnside in the 1950s were William Naslund/Spirit of '76 and Jeff Mace/The Patriot, who impersonated Cap during the 40s until Burnside's turn.

And the MCU, Jeffrey Mace was the Director of SHIELD after Coulson, right when SHIELD went public again. He claimed to be an Inhuman, but he was actually using a cocktail serum made from Mr Hyde's serum to give him super strength (it could also possibly kill him, but he decided it was worth it) so he could be "the Patriot." As an Easter egg, Coulson stated that they chose him because they wanted someone "like Captain America" to lead SHIELD, although Mace was more concerned with bureaucracy at first (he got better).

Fighting game fans may also know US Agent as that one palette swap of Cap in Marvel Vs Capcom 1.

In truth, in a comic book world any given military leader will probably be responsible for some significant breaches of ethics, protocol or chain of command. So many secret projects going on that no one above a certain rank would be clean. With Ross there was still a slim chance he had state and local authorities informed that something was happening. The instant SHIELD dissolved the Avengers became a private militia, and they would do things like evacuating Sokovia as though they had any political authority whatsoever.

Wouldn't Bruce say something about Ross at some point?

That would require him to be around. He was on the run up until Avengers and then was on the run again after Ao U.

I posted this in the FFH thread (no spoilers, don't worry), but I wanted to put it here because it's such a fun idea.

It'd be cool if the next Avengers / crossover film took a breather and went for a plot that's less densely dramatic, more bombastic and comic-booky, and introduced the Savage Land and Ka-Zar. The whole idea of a world inside of Earth with not just prehistoric concepts, but also strange and mystical ones: they could composite the idea with Thor's mythos and finally give us Jormungandr, for one. Or the main villain could be Spider-Man's antagonist Stegron, trying to use the Savage Land's properties to devolve the planet, and we could get that iconic panel about turning people into dinosaurs.

Saw Far From Home. Not gonna spoil anything here obviously, so I'll just say this: first half was "meh" and a bit cringe-worthy at time, but second half was great.

Oh yes, both of FFH's stingers are worthwhile, and quite important too.

I actually really liked all the Elemental fights. They were pretty fun.
