Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Shuma, Dormammu if they adapt the story where he and his Sister Umar are able to defeat Eternity, Umar herself, Zom, Chaos King, The First Firmament....

I could go on and on.

[up] Abaraxas could be the next one after Galactus, since Galactus's lifeforce is the very thing that keeps Abraxas at bay.

Saw Spider-Man, and without any spoilers I've got to give my reccommendations. It's not just a fantastic ride, it's imo a much better Spider-Man movie - in tone, in characterization and in themes - than Homecoming was.

Mysterio is definitely a dope character.

A fine-ass performance by Jake Gy-........ however his names spelled.

That's like comparing steak to chicken. They're both excellent movies that are different enough from each other that comparisons are all up to personal taste.

Excellent metaphor. No point comparing a fine tender steak and a perfect roast chicken.

I liked Homecoming, but I gotta say Far from Home was great.

You know, even for the least like movies like Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, I still believe there's something in all of them that's pretty good (yes, that's right; as awful as they were, I feel even those two movies had some moments or concepts that were good).

For this movie, it was Quentin Beck. You will believe this dude has nearly driven both Spidey and Daredevil insane at different points in his career after one scene, and that's all I'll say on the subject.

Not bad for a fish bowl head who stole his name from a pro wrestler.

....even though Comics Mysterio might have actually come first.

Got back from Spider-Man Far From Home. Pretty fun, maybe a little too horny, 1st half can feel like a Hannah Montana episode, 2nd half is trippy and creative, Mysterio might be my new favorite character, all the theories here are wrong, there’s a mid-credits and end credits scene.

All of them? Considering quite a few theories were thrown about including "yes he's telling the truth", "no he's completely lying and is evil", and "he's partially truthful but is still evil".

I wouldn't say all the theories are wrong, no.

Obviously he's got a real alignment made clear eventually. I mean as in the theories of "maybe Marvel's going to do something really off the wall to fool the viewers who already guessed the most likely plots", those are false. Don't double-triple-quadruple-guess too much.

Not sure if that's a typo of "corny", or if this movie goes full teen sex comedy.

It's definitely in large part teen romantic comedy, in the same way the previous movie was in large part teen coming of age movie.

A lot of Peter awkwardly fumbling because he is not good at romance.

There's maybe a case to be made that they could have meshed those two halves better. This film does a great job being a superhero movie, and a great job being a fun-but-cringey awkward romantic comedy, but is probably at its weakest in the moments where it tries to do both at once.

I typed "horny", because I meant horny. It's not full on American Pie raunchy, but nearly every teased relationship from "European women!" Ned to "Check out how hot I got" Brad to "Totally not dropping by your aunt" Happy, up to two scenes demanding Peter strip in front of women, MJ 100% trying to check Peter out, yep, horniness everywhere. Of course, it's a teen movie starring teens with raging hormones.

Also this film has better usage of the students than the last ones.

Barring the ones with actual previously established importance or presence like MJ & Flash, out of a class trip of like 10 students we learn a little bit of mostly minute information about 2 of them. tongue
