Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I know it's not fair and I'll be watching the show anyway at some point, but god do a lot of the villains in Agents of Shield look like just a bunch of ordinary people with no flair.

Ordinary people? Boy, I don't know what kind of people you know who look like this:

(In all fairness, too, most of the villains SHIELD fights against are normal humans, so...yeah, they would look like normal humans. There are some exceptions, however.)

It is a show about secret agents, not superheros for the most part till the later points.

So of course there's not as much pageantry or theatricality.

[up][up] I mean, yeah. Hive is an exception. But he's the biggest one I've seen.

I guess what I mean is, even though they ARE unpowered humans, they LOOK super ultra normal even despite that. The actors aren't particularly distinctive.

Really? I think these actors are plenty distinctive:
  • Bill Paxton (Garrett)
  • Reed Diamond (Daniel Whitehall)
  • Dichen Lachman (Jiaying)
  • Mallory Jansen (AIDA)

And a lot more.

[up][up]And even Hive aparency just show up a couple of time, one of the reason I was disapoint by the chararter: he is more posturing than deeds.

But yeah, agent of shield is a super spy series, not a superhero one.

[up]It help that garret does act like a typical supervillian and not surprising is death is anticlimatic as hell because well of course.

[up][up] I dunno. I'll probably get used to it. I just think about stuff like even the Netflix shows, each villain had a distinct visual style to them, even the ones that didn't have powers.

[up][up][up][up][up]And then you had Inhumans where they tried for more "comic booky" looks and it still ended up looking like ass. I don't know what it is with the ABC shows and not being able to pull off comic looks.

AIDA as Madame Hydra definitely had a distinctive look:

A question about the film history of Spider-Man: since the Sam Raimi movies, was the suit in those films the same one that was worn later on by Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland, or did Marvel have to make a new suit as the suit or suits worn by Tobey Maguire and later Garfield were in Sony productions?

They were definitely new suits. Several would’ve been made due different actor sizes, stunt doubles, potential damage, close-ups vs wide action shots, CGI touch-ups, etc. During filming of the first Raimi movie, four of the suits were stolen.

Generally speaking, a new movie usually results in new suits being designed and built anyway, as the ones from the previous movie tend to be valuable as collectors items and leaving them in storage can have a detrimental impact to their quality for reuse (rubbery materials especially start to crack when dried out). There are subtle changes to the Raimi Spider-Man "Hero Suit" over all three movies, mostly in coloration between the red, blue and black. The later movies did take some lessons from them on how to make a Spider-Man costume over trial and error, the Raimi suit had issues with the web pattern fraying off and had to be touched up after every take. Amazing Spider-Man had the webbing woven more directly into the fabric while the MCU made it mostly just a stencil.

Welp, yesterday I peeped a Far From Home spoiler. I'm mildly disappointed in myself, but I guess/hope that seeing it in the context of the movie in theaters will be different or something.

Aliterator: My issue is a wheedonian death/defeat were the villian does something typical and the hero is "Nope!" It was good with Loki(Kinda, him suddenly busting like that in front of hulk was very off to me) but I feel it dosent work again, specially since Garret spend the last episode just monologing like and Idiot.

Best death will always be Malick, best hydra chararter by long shot.

Oh man I just realized I'm seeing Spider-Man tommaraw.

I shall see whether or not Mysterio really is from another universe or no.

Random thought: This might be a Far From Home spoiler, but has SWORD been established in the MCU yet?

Because with SHIELD being HYDRA'd and half of the universe getting snapped into oblivion, Fury would want to double down on going into the offense in case some space fool wants to be the next Thanos. So instead of a shield to defend Earth, why not a sword to make Earth an unbeatable can of whoop-ass?

(See where I'm going here? I know SWORD is usually a space-themed organization, but...)

With one of the consequences of The Snap being the fabric of the universe being weakened, I'm wondering if we can expect to see Shuma-Gorath.

If anyone could surpass Thanos as a Big Bad, it's Shuma-Gorath.

Disgusted, but not surprised
