Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The Incredible Hulk's CGI doesn't look as good as Ironman 1.

In terms of general CGI, The Incredible Hulk rendering of Hulk had a video game quality about it. The 2003 Hulk showed a much larger range of emotion, he wasn't just snarling in every shot, but showed his anger slowly ramping up. Avengers onward was obviously able to give him a more endearing presence, a bigger personality than just the musclebound personification of anger.

I liked the framing and cinematography of a few shots in Incredible Hulk. There were a couple very nice looking stills, like Hulk roaring at the lightning, Hulk pushing against the sonic waves, Hulk with a car torn in half for boxing gloves, and Hulk jumping away at the end of the fight. It's not huge praise, but that is one thing that I enjoyed about it.

It definitely ramped up the action and the pacing, which in turn made the character feel more powerful. I think the movie might have been slightly better received if it wasn't for the 2003 Hulk, not because of the backlash from the first movie but because too much of TIH was retreading all the same beats while being afraid of the comparison to let it breathe (as I said, Hulk himself has a lot less depth than 2003 or Avengers).

I like the scene on the bridge in the building...though the part where his hands presses against the glass always makes me laugh, because it reminds me so much of Titanic.

I still maintain that TIH is the worst film in the MCU so far.

Most other entries in the MCU have at least SOMETHING resembling decent screenwriting and good emotional beats, even if the movie itself is mostly a failure or very uneven.

TIH on the other hand is so empty and devoid of anything to care about. None of the characters are established in a satisfying way, except for Blonsky where it's basically just Tim Roth doing his best to elevate what is extremely thin material, and it's not enough.

It is easily my least favourite, though I guess some can argue that TDW is worse overall...but TDW has at least some high points. TIH just bores me.

[up][up][up]That just about sums it up. I can't really see myself watching this ever again. much less if I had to pay money for it. It's as lame and boilerplate as these movies get. Even most other MCU duds have some bright spots or are at least more interesting to talk about.

I liked TDW less than TIH. Hulk never managed to surpass meh but it did managed to engage my attention throughout. TDW was great whenever Frigga or Loki were onscreen, but when they weren't I was so bored I wanted to stop watching the film entirely.

The only one I can make a case for being actively worse is Iron Man 3, but that's in terms of wasted potential, not being a hollow husk of a film with nothing in it, so by Drag's criteria, TIH is still the worst.

TIH is the only movie in the MCU that doesn't feel like an MCU movie, if that makes sense. Like, even the likes of Iron Man 3 and The Dark World still feel like MCU movies, but inept. TIH doesn't have that excuse.

The legend has returned.

[up] To be fair, Incredible Hulk is the second MCU movie that ever was, so "doesn't really feel like an MCU movie" can be chalked down to Early-Installment Weirdness.

Yeah, and I at least care about the Loki and Frigga scenes. I don't care about anything in TIH.

The fact that nothing from Incredible Hulk matters or has ever been referenced ever again kind of damns it.

General Ross is still around. But yeah, aside from those two, I don't think any of it has ever been referenced. Hulk breaking Harlem wasn't even mentioned in Luke Cage, which was set in Harlem.

Of course, there are the frequent mentions of people wanting the MCU to have some sort of supervillain team, and Abomination is almost always brought up as one of the possible candidates, though mostly because he happens to still be alive.

For me, TIH was fine, and was better than Iron Man 3 and Thor 2, which I find are amongst the worst films in the MCU.

I'm pretty sure he's still in prison. Maybe he's even in the Raft, since the Russos considered having him cameo in Civil War.

I think the last we heard of him was in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., where Coulson threatens to put someone on "Blonsky duty" in an Alaskan prison as a punishment. I believe that was back in the first season before the HYDRA debacle went down, so who knows what happened to him.

Although, apparently there were talks to have him reappear in Avengers: Age of Ultron early on in production, although it's not clear what role he would've had. I'd wager he was originally going to be one of Strucker's goons, but who knows for sure.

#103499: Jun 9th 2019 at 2:40:54 PM

[up][up][up] The last reference to him was in Agents of SHIELD episode "T.R.A.C.K.S.". Coulson said, "What you're doing is against protocol, so if you endanger an operation or if anyone gets hurt, I'll reassign you to Barrow, Alaska, and you'll spend the rest of your years pulling the night shift guarding Blonsky's cryo-cell."

So either he's still in Alaska or the Hydra overthrow caused him to be let loose (like it did for everyone in the Fridge, which, ironically, was not in Alaska).

[nja] Well, that was ninja'd fast.

Double post because we just got a first glimpse at the Disney+ Loki series. Apparently, part of it (or at least one scene) will be set in 1975, since that's when Jaws was released.

I just want one scene where Loki looks in a mirror and goes, "Hot damn, I've evil!"
