Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up]If they're going to give Bucky a love interest, must be a woman.

I do not want they to make Bucky gay, as a pathetic inclusion attempt. (As they did with Iceman.)

If a protagonist is gay or Bi must be Loki.

We’re just gonna pretend Avengers #200 didn’t happen.

No seriously, that’s the agreement. It never happened.

If they decide to turn a female character into a lesbian or Bisexual, I think Carol would be the most obvious candidate.

Valkyrie has already been confirmed, but she has not had any relationship on-screen.

[up]Bisexual would be fine, but I feel like making her a lesbian would just give the naysayers more ammo to degrade the character and anything else she’s in.

I'm pretty sure the same would happen if she was bisexual.

Anyone not straight & you'll get bitching.

Look at Batwoman.

[up]That trailer was...ugh.

I really hope the show makes up for it, because these sorts of things are going to be judged negatively by default.

Eh some stilted dialogue aside, it wasn't that bad.

If you want pathetic inclusion attempts go look at Joe Russo's easily missable cameo in Endgame. There's a lot of reasons queer Bucky wouldn't be half a bad idea. He's a leading character with fairly high prominence in the films. A lot of people already think he might be gay or bisexual (even if a lot of it is due to Shipping Goggles, not all of it is). It'd be a good throwback to the fact that he's already a Composite Character with Arnie Roth, a character who was canonically gay and the center of a rather touching and well-done Gay Aesop in the 80s. His actual comic book love interest, Black Widow, is pretty unavailable at the moment. And while he's definitely been on casual dates with girls, nothing too serious was shown either for it to be contradictory; he's from the 1940s so they could easily be beards as it was with Arnie, and 40's Brooklyn had a strong LGBT+ demographic so he wouldn't necessarily be unfamiliar with same-gender attraction.

If they absolutely must give Bucky some kind of Token Romance (which I'd rather avoid completely if possible) their choice is to pawn Sharon off from Steve onto him similar to what they did with Hawkeye's ex-wife Mockingbird on AOS, which as I already mentioned is not a great idea, or have him get with a brand new character, which would require wasting even more screentime in order to establish a connection in the first place. None of the choices are worth it unless some genuine risks are taken here, and since they won't, just don't bother at all.

[up]I think that would be preferable to Carol by a mile.

Honestly, why would it even matter what the naysayers think? People caring that much and being afraid of taking risks is precisely what's holding a lot of representation back in the first place. They'd pore over it with a microscope looking for excuses to complain no matter what they do with Carol. Even if it's the most inoffensive and milquetoast thing possible.

I think Carol would make the most sense out of the heroes to be gay, besides Valkyrie and maybe Okoye.

The legend has returned.

their choice is to pawn Sharon off from Steve onto him similar to what they did with Hawkeye's ex-wife Mockingbird on AOS
  1. Mockingbird is more than just "Hawkeye's ex-wife." She has a long history in the comics.
  2. She wasn't "pawned" on AOS — they asked if they could use her and Feige approved. "Pawning" sounds like a negative, which it wasn't: the show made her a great character and gave her great episodes and moments and even when she left, it was a tearjerker.

So...no, I don't agree with you.

You probably mean Ayo rather than Okoye. Although it leaves us with a pretty hefty gender imbalance when it comes to LGBT rep when you add Jeri Hogarth to the picture.

[up]I haven't watched AOS but I wasn't trying to disparage what they did with Mockingbird. The point is about the transplanting one character's love interest to another, and given how poorly they handled Sharon throughout the films, up to framing her as a lesser replacement of her great-aunt, pawning seems like the right word for Sharon.

Or the more recent sullen take?
While in the comics, Hercules has decided to stop drinking and focus on more heroics, he has never been "sullen." In Avengers, he was still the boisterious demigod like before and in Avengers: No Road Home, he was struck by his need for vengeance against Nyx, the Goddess of Night, for killing all the rest of the Greek Pantheon.

If Deadpool converts over to the MCU, he also counts, since he's pan. And I meant Okoye.

She's depicted as being W'Kabi's wife in the films and the idea of her flirting with Ayo, who is an open lesbian in the comics, was shot down pretty early. Likely before they decided she and W'Kabi were a couple, because she doesn't seem like the cheating kind. So it seems like a What Could Have Been at this point.

Polyamory is a thing, you know? Also, I'm pretty sure she's no longer W'Kabi's wife, considering what went down in Black Panther.

The MCU is only just beginning to dip a toe in queer rep, I don’t see them considering poly rep in 10 years.

Anyway, yes, gimme gay Bucky and co.

Fanon is one thing but polyamory is even less likely to receive endorsement in the films than LGBT+ relationships, even as Getting Crap Past the Radar.
