Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Thor caught Thanos by surprise.

He didn’t have the time to think of a stronger attack.

Why are we spoiler tagging Infinity War? It's over a year old. Anyway, it's partly this [up] and partly that Stormbreaker is just that awesome.

Yeah, I think the Russos explicitly said an interview that Stormbreaker did not overpower the Infinity Gauntlet. Thanos was caught off-guard and and only used a fraction of its full-power to try and stop Thor.

It's also easy to forget that Thanos was still adjusting to the complete Infinity Gauntlet. He's able to whether its effects better than most, but all that power can probably make you lose track of your immediate surroundings at first.

The explanation i heard is that Eitri put basically a backdoor weakness into the Gauntlet that Stormbreaker could exploit

I just learned today that Marvel's Executive VP, Victoria Alonso, is LGBT.

The movie was shot in Atlanta, where the Georgia legislature has in recent years considered bills that would allow discrimination against same-sex couples. Would you advocate pulling Marvel movies from the state if such a law passed?

The Walt Disney Co. has been very vocal about that, and I side with the company. I have very strong feelings about it. My wife comes with me everywhere. We’ve been married for 16 years. We have a child. I’m as out as they come. I don’t walk in every room and say, “Hey, I’m gay, nice to meet you!” [But] when people say “Are you married?” I never shy from saying, “Yes, to my wife.” That to me is part of the advocacy that needs to happen in order for us to have a common ground.

I wonder if she's why Marvel is starting to push for LGBT representation currently? I know she became Executive VP in 2015, which is right when Marvel's push for diversity came and she's part of the reason that Black Panther and Captain Marvel were both made.

I don't know if someone else said it, but I suggested he could be Shang-Chi's villain a long while back. There's less risk of China being mad about it if he's opposed by an actual Chinese superhero. Plus I don't think Marvel has the rights to the character Fu Manchu anymore, so win-win I guess.

Some of Jonah Jameson's best moments tend to come from Daredevil, come to think of it. Seen through the eyes of Phil Ulrich, Jameson's lifelong friend and who is usually covering highly dangerous criminal conspiracies, Jameson tends to come across as a bastion of journalism integrity of sorts willing to break big and dangerous stories despite the threats of the powers that be (be them corrupt government folks or powerful criminal dons) and always doing his best to protect his journalists from said powers that be.

It makes sense, if you think about things from his perspective.

Jameson believes there is a dangerous vigilante out there with zero regard for law or basic morality. A person who could, at any time, walk right into his office and snap him in half. It'd be easy. Like breaking a toothpick.

He shits on this person every day in the headlines. Doesn't miss an opportunity. Never even shied away from doing it in person on those instances where Spider-Man came to him. It's easy to overlook because he's antagonizing our hero, but Jameson actually has a lot of nerve.

It's nice, those occasions when that nerve and that raw, fiery passion get turned against people who actually deserve it.

So has it ever been explained why Stormbreaker was capable of powering through the united might of the infinity stones at the end of Infinity War.

Thanos fires a blast comprising all the colours of the gauntlet and Thor meets it by throwing Stormbreaker. It somehow keeps travelling, pushing the beam back and impales Thanos.

It's not like a quick moment either. The Axe soldiers on through at least 2 seconds of sustained contact with the Gauntlet lasers.

Because it was cool.

That's about the level of depth involved with anything in Infinity War and Endgame. Both films are a series of superficial AWESOME MOMENTS with very little care for how or why things are happening that way.

Both films are a series of superficial AWESOME MOMENTS with very little care for how or why things are happening that way.

I strongly dispute this. Almost everything that happens in the two films is built up from themes, plots, and foreshadowing that have come before. Yes, they are also built on Rule of Cool, because they're comic book films, but virtually nothing is pulled from thin air without at least some attempt at justification, even if it's only implied.

I can't think of very many plot points in Endgame that are based on logic or character elements that have not already been established or foreshadowed. Of course, there are a few, such as Nebula's "network" causing the two versions of her to crosstalk, or Thanos' ridiculously powerful sword thingy, but those don't bother me particularly.

The film is a masterful summation of 11 years of storytelling, and for that reason it is in my top favorites of all time.

[up][up]That's about why I knew going in that Endgame was never gonna be top-tier in my rankings, even though I kind of like it more than Infinity War.

I do genuinely like both movies, but the sheer amount of characters to try and handle comes at the cost of well and true depth compared to other movies.
