Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

He is more a reactionary.
J Jonah Jameson was always stand-in for the typical, irrational newsmonger who controls the media's perception of Spider-Man... as well as being an in-joke amongst the Marvel Comics team of how they felt about their daily routine at the office, with Jameson being the less flattering side of Stan Lee.
However, his initial portrayal has soften to show he has good qualities overtime. I presume that, like Flash Thompson, it didn't make sense to keep him around if he remained unsympathetic and useless to actual news reporting.
Jameson gets his occasional Pet the Dog moments. But they are far overshadowed by his awful bits. Up to and including commissioning his own supervillain to defeat Spider-Man.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.The Ultimate comics probably had the nicest Jameson. He actually does a 180, decides he was wrong about Spider-Man, and makes efforts to make amends.
But those exceptions are rare. More often are things like when Spider-Man joined the Avengers so Jameson declared the Avengers Ruined Forever and shifted his focus to attacking all of them, or when Spider-Man publicly unmasked and Jameson sued Peter Parker for defrauding the paper.

Modern Jameson sued Peter Parker for being Spider-Man, slandered the Avengers as an institution for recruiting Spider-Man, and created a Spider-hunting militarized task force when he became Mayor of NYC. Among other things.
A sympathetic moment here or there doesn't change the deranged vendetta he has against Spider-Man that has long transcended the realm of reason or sanity. He has the capacity for human decency and even some positive traits that come out from time to time, but as soon as Spider-Man's involved, he lightswitches into frothing lunacy.

i think the event people are talking about is the civil war one, where peter unmasked to show his support for the registration law. jonah reacted... poorly.
Jameson gets hit by the problem Flash Thompson or Magneto does: he's by and large portrayed as having undergone character development, but occasional a more classical minded writer will decide they liked him better when he was a jerk/villain and forcibly write him as a complete asshole, setting him back for other writers to have to repeat that character development.
Migrated to Chloe Jessica!
i mean, even with the character development, i feel like it's pretty normal for someone to react poorly to realize someone they trusted has been deceiving them all along.
Migrated to Chloe Jessica! He very nearly almost said that some of his best friends were black before stopping himself
Forever liveblogging the Avengers

JK is such a Tough Act to Follow, though. if it's not him, the new actor will inevitably fall short compared to him, unless they change the portrayal so radically that it doesn't evoke JK's portrayal at all.

the video game got around it by having Darin De Paul doing his best JK Simmons impression, with a bit of Alex Jones thrown in for Flavor.
Sound-Alikes really only work in an animated format though.
