Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

There was a Fantastic Four cartoon where they rejected letting Squirrel Girl join the team so it’s bad
But then She-Hulk joined so it’s neutral
Forever liveblogging the AvengersThe closest we have to this is Clint being a SHIELD agent and family man and even then that's all he has in common with his Ultimate comic counterpart. Other than that, yeah pretty much everything is closer to 616 versions or if it isn't, it's an entirely new take.
What I particularly like about the MCU is that, while it borrows from and is inspired by many aspects of the comics, it establishes its own unique identity for all of the characters and stories. This means that fans can't easily predict what's going to happen just because of comic knowledge.
Perhaps even better, knowing this provides a very straightforward and easily citable shield against fan complaints that the characters are being "done wrong" or are "not canonical".

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Tidbit: There is a troper in the Marvel Comics forum who practically worships the Ultimate line & its authors Mark Miller & Brian Michael Bendis.
They take the MCU’s usage of certain elements from it as more proof that the Ultimate line was the greatest work of comic stories written that also saved Marvel.
Despite the fact that all the appropriations from the Ultimate line is shallow at best.
It’s funny.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Even Nick Fury, while being visibly Ultimate Nick Fury, is presented more in line with 616 Nick Fury while still being his own character at the same time.
And him being visibly Ultimate Nick Fury is just contract fulfillment. When Marvel asked Samuel L. Jackson for his likeness because they really wanted Ultimate Nick Fury to look like him, Jackson agreed with the stipulation that if they ever make a movie with Nick Fury, he gets to play the character.
This was in 2002, six years before the first MCU film would ever even be a thing. Back in the day when X-Men and Spider-Man were the big hit superhero films. That one silly likeness agreement has worked out better than Jackson ever could have imagined.
I think he truly enjoys this role, though. Otherwise he wouldn't have gone through all the trouble to even appear in Ao S.
He absolutely enjoys the role. It's why he put that clause in his contract in the first place.
Samuel L. Jackson is living the comic nerd dream. Other actors are here because they needed the role, some have never even read the comics before, but he's here because he really wants to be a Marvel Comics hero.
It's the same reason Nicholas Cage (who loves Marvel so much that his stage name, "Cage", is actually a reference to Luke Cage) signed on to play Ghost Rider. Only without the tragic conclusion where the movies suck and he never gets hired on a Marvel film again (Until Into the Spider-Verse!).

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Samuel L Jackson also appeared in Snakes on a Plane solely because he wanted that title to appear in his filmography
Forever liveblogging the AvengersSamuel L. Jackson also isn't above taking roles that kind of take the piss out of his typical Badass roles. Examples: Deep Blue Sea and The Other Guys. Or roles that play his badassitude negatively such as Kong: Skull Island.

Disgusted, but not surprisedFunnily enough, something similar happened later on with Garth Ennis's The Boys — "Wee" Hughie, the main character, was modeled after Simon Pegg. When Pegg got in touch with the creators, all he requested was that he be a part of it when it became a movie. It took a while, though, so Pegg is actually playing Hughie's father in the new Amazon Prime show.
"Jesus poor guy, survived Auschwitz just to have his spirit and will broken by some man in blue lycra with a wooden gun."
"handcuffs made out of metal
Magneto: a wooden gun...
cops have metal guns
Magneto: a wooden gun...
Cops take him away in their metal cars
Magneto: a wooden gun...
put behind iron bars
Magneto: a wooden gun..."
"Magneto: A... WOODEN GUN? So my powers worked this whole time?
Mr. Fantastic: "That's right Magne-"
Magneto: procedes to lift the police cars up and use them to crush everyone"
"tfw you can't control a gun so you lose all will to live"
"Magneto was so depressed at his own stupidity that he willingly surrendered to the police and entered the back of their clearly metal police car."
"Wow... 60's Magneto is as frightening as Alzheimer's disease. Which it sounds like he has."
"Imagine a rubber band finger gun on this guy. He would be destroyed."
"When adults say that cartoons were better when they were young, show them this."
"I also banked on you being too dumb to test your magnetism powers on another piece of nearby metal! Fortunately, that gamble paid off big time."
"An interesting turn of events would be this:
MAGNETO: Now that you revealed your plan, I shal use my magnetic powers, of which I begin growing tired of mentioning, to lift this police car and throw it at you. raises hand to car but nothing happens WHAT!? How can this be!? The car does not answer to me. tries to lift the other car but fails What is happening? You lied to me, you TOOK my magnetism!
RICHARDS: I didn't. But I knew you would try to do something like that. So I replaced the metal cars with cardboard replicas.
MAGNETO: Wha-what else did you replace?
RICHARDS: Say something.
MAGNETO: The police's guns.
RICHARDS: Cardboard.
MAGNETO: Their badges.
RICHARDS: Cardboard.
MAGNETO: The guards.
RICHARDS: Cardboard. guards look at him Sorry officers, it was the only way.
MAGNETO: I-I...
RICHARDS: It's over for real Magneto. You'll find that the term 'World of Cardboard' has never been any more literal today.
Everyone, including Magneto, laughs
RICHARDS: Now take him away, officers.
MAGNETO: NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!"
"The same Magneto is sitting in a cell today in his incredibly old age, huddled in the corner as he sobs over the thought of being beaten by a man with a wooden gun.
His cellmate of about 20 years still doesn't have the heart to tell him that the prison bars are made of iron."
Oh, the comments on that video are perfect.

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.
TBF, there is a Marvel character called the Human Torch who is a robot.
Also, his blood (yes he has blood...somehow) gave someone superpowers turning her into Spitfire
. And when she got a life-saving transfusion from him again when she was an elderly woman, the blood not only saved her life and restored her powers, it also de-aged her back to her teenage years.
...Comics!

Disgusted, but not surprisedActually, the Human Torch didn't appear because Universal held his TV rights. Universal contracted the TV rights to various Marvel characters that they thought could make for some cool TV shows and films.
This is the same deal that led to the much beloved 1978 Incredible Hulk TV series starring Lou Ferrigno; easily the most well-received of Universal's efforts. They also created made-for-TV movies for Captain America and Dr. Strange. Winter Soldier actually references the former of those movies by having Captain America steal a pickup truck; it's the one scene from Universal's Cap movie that people actually remember.
Also their Captain America movie had a sequel: the amazingly titled, "Captain America: Death Too Soon". So that's fun.
Anyways, as part of the deal, Universal decided they wanted the Human Torch. And only the Human Torch. Marvel could keep the rest of the Four; Universal just wanted a Johnny Storm movie.
So when the Fantastic Four cartoon rolled around, Marvel had a problem on their hands. Universal held Johnny's TV rights. Thus, they created H.E.R.B.I.E. to round out the team. Meanwhile, Johnny's solo show/movie never materialized and the rights eventually reverted to Marvel, but that was well after the cartoon.
H.E.R.B.I.E. later made the jump to the comics, acting as the Four's assistant around the Baxter Building.
