Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

On a similar topic Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 did a pretty good job at giving all the Guardians and so on a fairly decent subplot or character beat. Except maybe Groot? I think he learned something and grew but it’s hard to say

Nah Groot was always perfect and did nothing wrong.

This song needs more love. And that right there is why we need new X-films by the masters of superhero storytelling.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Huh. Disney's Star Wars writers could take a page from the Marvel writers for how to do non-human characters well.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The MCU did what no other superhero studio was willing to do: play the characters and ideas completely straight and make no apologies for doing so.
Some studios be like, "They're X-Men, but they're COOL and EDGY. Only losers wear colorful spandex." And other studios be like, "I mean, it's Batman but AHAHAHAHA IT'S CAMPY AND FUN. LOL WE'RE IN ON THE JOKE TOO. WHAT A SILLY GENRE."
And then the MCU was like, "F*ck you, I have a raccoon with a minigun, deal with it."

Honestly I think there is plenty of room for more subdued interpretations of comic book superheroes. And I'll even credit those early movies with laying the foundation that allowed the MCU and other later comic book movies to truly embrace the comic book craziness of their source materials.
Even the MCU didn't go from zero to 60 day one. The Phase 1 films, especially the first few, tended to be a lot more gritty and grounded then what followed. Thor: Ragnarok for example is not a movie that could of existed in any sense in Phase 1.
So what would you guys think about a Fantastic Four Movie with a production Design based on Late Marvel Period Jack Kirby?
Once he wasn't doing like 5 issues a week, Kirby really starts to stretch his artistic Muscles, and there's no better place to see that than the second half of the Lee/Kirby Fantastic Four Run. The earlier stuff is good, but there's a definite change in the art starting around issue 34 or so, and fully solidifies with Issue Issue 48
, the Debut of the Silver Surfer. That's when things like Kirby Krackle and long form storytelling really start to get introduced, but his style has never been fully realized on screen.
The Fantastic Four really deserve a good adaptation, since this was the comic that really started in all in terms of Marvel. It was the first collaboration between Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and completely revolutionized comics as a medium, in ways that are still being felt today.

I think that no matter what, Marvel should wrap up the current X-men run first. And I mean all of it, including the gifted. And with "wrapping up" I don't mean "cancel it", but let it peter out. And then wait for a while. The X-men could use a break.
The fantastic 4 on the other hand...they are a family of explorers! They are practically made for the MCU.
Are you referring to the Fantastic 4? I think the fact that the first movie made a more than decent amount of money weights more in this case. Everyone knows that the reason the last movie failed was extremely toxic Wo M.
Rise of the Silver Surfer didn't have very good box office numbers either. It had a strong opening weekend and it did make a profit, but overall it didn't do as well as the first film. Its lackluster performance and its terrible critical reception are why the third film never materialized.
The reboot film did much worse. Lowest grossing Fantastic Four film to date and the worst rated.
Disgusted, but not surprised
Fant4stick sucked. I swear the no budget Roger Corman one, was better than it, since you can get at least some enjoyment from earnestness and So Bad, It's Good production values. (The Incredibles still holds the honor of being the best Fantastic Four Movie though.)
That's why I say they should try pushing further into a Kirby type production design, and embrace the ridiculousness of a superfamily that once went to heaven to rescue Ben Grimm after he died.

And the concept of how a team faces adversity or crumbles under it.
Yes the Trinity take center stage, but it's not like they're Cyclops or Nightcrawler.
