Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Cross does have some perks, though, like the look on his face when Pym Tech implodes. tongue

It still leaves me with my annoyance over them dedicating a large part of the film to a character training and then having the villain just suddenly be an expert for no reason.

There was no indication he was an expert. You don't exactly need that much practice in fight to match someone who only practice fighting for a few days. Also, he had a edge by virtue of his suit being specifically built to be a weapon, whereas Pym's gear doesn't have any integrated weapon.

[up]Tell me about it. One of my favourite parts with him, along with his "I'M GONNA DISINTEGRATE YOU!" Line.^^

Scott is also, most of all, just a burglar rather than a fighter so it's not like we're talking a random guy vs a super soldier.

Also, Cross is distinct of Stane by virtue of being bugnuts (implicitly caused by the Pym particles).

Ant-Man vs Yellowjacket is one of the best climaxes ever just for he sheer absurdity of it.

The Ant-Man films have really embraced the comic book madcap insanity.

I do wish there had been a bit of Lampshade Hanging about how Cross is so far gone that, of all the thousands of applications for shrinking technology that could benefit the world, he can only seem to think of ones that turn it into a weapon.

Okay, random stupid but potentially cool idea.

Kraven the Hunter. Played by Dwayne Johnson. With no trace of an accent whatsoever, yet supposedly still Russian.

I always loved Blonsky not having a hint of a russian accent because the actor didn't want to do one, so they wrote in a line about how he was "raised in england" brilliant.

[up][up]If Dwayne Johnson were to play Kraven, could The Rock play Chameleon? They're brothers in real life just like Kraven and Chameleon.

Wait, you want Dwayne Johnson to play a Marvel Comics character from Russia, and it's not Colossus?

KnownUnknown Since: Jan, 2001

Dwayne Johnson would definitely not be my first choice to play Colossus, at least in contrast to other options. I guess a better way to put it is that Colossus would not be my first choice for Dwayne Johnson.

I think the Colossus in the Deadpool films is already the perfect version of the character, and I would like if they didn't recast him. We know they're continuing the Deadpool movies, so maybe Deadpool messing with time in Deadpool 2 retconned him into the MCU.

The results for this weekend's box office aren't in fully yet, but Avengers: Endgame is expected to surpass Infinity War, The Force Awakens, and Titanic by a hair ($2,188,698,638).

If true, Endgame would only need 600 million more to surpass Avatar, and it's still only been in theaters for one week so far.

[up]×2

They probably will recast all the X-Men for when they're introduced in the MCU, it is a new continuity.

in the comics and cartoons Wasp is Tinkerbell sized a lot of the time, something i wish they had carried over to the films

She was shrunken a lot in Ant-Man and The Wasp, so i'm not understanding the complaint.

I think the complaint is that Wasp is actually too small. By "Tinkerbell size" I think they mean "3-4 times taller than Ant-Man" which can make for a neat visual contrast. I think it makes more sense for her to be the same size as Ant-Man (easier for filming with), but she does appear much larger in a bunch of other versions.

[up][up][up] Disney tends to underestimate, so we have to wait and see. The numbers could be off considerably in this area.

How in the world DID Avatar make that much money?

Such that a massive crossover epic with a decade a history and over 20 prior movies fueling it was needed to even have a chance of supplanting it.
