Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

All this commotion about MCU itself is... finally starting to get to me. At first I chose to ignore it (out of lack of interest, nothing "it sucks! I hate it! Never gonna watch it! KMEEEEHHH 11!"), but more and more I'm becoming drawn to the movies. To date I only watched the first Iron Man few times. Fun movie tho. (I remember a neighbor giving the DVD to me almost a decade ago for my birthday)

And with this Endgame movie out which has all sorts of epic stuff, I should... get to it. This is weird, I never ever had Hype Aversion towards MCU. Pure neutral indifference, like I knew there was Infinity War last year but it was just a day like any other for me.

I am a bit intimidated... there's so, so much stuff to catch to and learn all the little details, unless I'm wrong?

So... yeah...

Welcome aboard! I know it can be a bit intimidating to try and catch up with it all. Hell, there's still a few I haven't seen in full (though I know of what goes on during even the movies I haven't seen). I think I should give a few disclaimers right away:

1. It's probably best to watch these movies in order of release, though do remember that's not the same as chronological order (The First Avenger is set in WWII, Captain Marvel is set in the 90s, both Guardians movies are set in 2014).

2. Unless something somehow comes up in Endgame (don't spoil pls), The Incredible Hulk is the most skippable movie. I don't think there's anything you're really missing out on in subsequent movies if you pass on it. That and, well, the movie itself is...not great.

3. The Guardians of the Galaxy movies I think you can actually watch without having to see the previous movies. Really, if you wanna go ahead and jump right into the first one, I think you'll be alright. It's what I did and I don't regret it.

[up][up][up] Honestly there is no MUST to like the MCU. Frankly, I never jumped on the Star Wars Hyper train and I never will and I don't think that my life is in any way lesser for it, or that I am missing on something.

If you are interested though because the movies speak to you, have fun. Remember, the point of the MCU is that there is supposed to be something for everyone...also, small tip, they made us FEEL as if we have to see all movies (and TV shows), but in reality, you actually don't have to. There are a few which are pretty essential, but a lot of them are just there to expend on the story.

And yeah, The incredible Hulk is incredible optional.

[up] The First Avenger, Captain Marvel, Ironman, then The Incredible Hulk, Ironman 2 and Thor set roughly in the same week, The Avengers (Spring 2012), Ironman 3, The Dark World, The Winter Soldier, Got G, Got G Vol 2, Age of Ultron, Ant-man, Civil War, (the next movies overlap each other) Black Panther, Spiderman Homecoming, Doctor Strange, Ragnarök, and technically it is Ant-man and the Wasp and THEN Infinity War, but unless you already know what happens in Infinity War it naturally makes more sense to watch Infinity War first and finally Endgame

Don't worry, I am not forcing/being forced to like it, but it's like I see there's that slice of pizza on the counter. A perfect slice, never rots/deteriorates and I ignore it for so long.

And then only now do I find that pizza so delicious. I suck at metaphors... yeah.

Wait, I did watch some Agents of SHIELD, even if I had no knowledge of greater MCU stuff. Damn is that show good... after season 1.

@Swanpride: actually the same, I only got to watch Star Wars OT some 3-4 years ago. I did play Battlefront games as a kid in mid-00's... against bots. Any troper here can kick my ass at a game of Counter-Strike, I guarantee you.

I could expand my horizons. The wait for DOOM Eternal is... well... Eternal enough. I need to entertain myself for months now. Then again I'm kinda bored/not interest in too much at the moment, and... uhhh... kinda hard to express myself with this lol. But seriously, I am feeling a genuine desire to get into MCU properly soon.

[up][up] Ao S is all kind of awesome. (And Cloak and Dagger has the same kind of unpredictable story telling, but is more laid back and more, well, social critical overall).

Well, enjoy your slice. A small part of me is jealous that you can new experience the Captain America Trilogy with fresh eyes. But then, experience all the expectation for Endgame was great too, since I am a past Avengers 1 fan.

Btw, Endgame just smashed all records by delivering a $156.7 million opening day. with an international haul of $487 million it now stands at $644 million overall….

THOSE ARE JUST THE FRIDAY NUMBERS!!!!!

In fact, the movie made already as much as the second highest weekend of the year so far. Just on opening day.

Dumb question but I feel like asking here now that I'm at the MCU thread: okay so growing up I watched Blade when I was younger. Kickass movie, really... even if third made it lame.

So is Marvel considering a new Blade movie to fit into this shared universe? Just to say more, I am kind of unsure of this big shared world thingamajig , I watched independent superhero movies when I was younger. Like... Blade again. Or Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. I also watched X-Men movies but it's been so long and never bothered rewatching them.

I'd like to see a Blade reboot. Not sure if Wesley Snipes returning is a good idea, I heard stories how he became very uncooperative during filming of Blade: Trinity. Then again that was yeaaaars ago, things have changed, so... I retract my statement.

We haven't heard anything about Marvel introducing Blade to the MCU, but it's not ruled out. I think they might have trouble getting Wesley Snipes for the role, though.

As for the big shared universe, what makes this one so effective is that it's not forced. Every film has a purpose beyond, "Hey, look at these characters that we're putting in so they can be in the Avengers." Well, there have been criticisms of Thor along those lines, but the point is that they work as both standalone films and as ensemble films. They have internal arcs, but they also set up recurring themes and stories that pay off, in some cases dozens of movies later.

In other words, Marvel isn't cramming it down our throats like DC did with Justice League. It all grows and builds upon itself organically and naturally.

You can see any one film (direct sequels aside; Iron Man 2 won't make much sense without Iron Man, but you know what I mean), or you can see all of the films. Either way you'll get a good experience.

Cool. Thanks for kind words! Why I said Blade for MCU, isn't Blade, a character in comics, created and owned by Marvel?

One of the problems that Disney-Marvel faced while building the MCU is that they didn't actually have the film rights to all of Marvel's comic book properties. X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and Deadpool are owned by Fox (which is now part of Disney); Spider-Man is owned by Sony. Over the years they have acquired, through various means, rights to a number of other properties: Punisher, Luke Cage, Blade, and so on.

The real problem is putting them all into a single coherent universe. That's going to be quite the feat when they don't all even exist in the same universe in the comics, or at least not consistently. Infinity War had to juggle more than twenty main characters. That's a monumental feat, and one I imagine they'd prefer not to have to attempt again any time soon.

[up][up] Yes Blade is indeed a Marvel Comics character.

I really should watch the movies especially since it has one-liners like “Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice skate uphill.”

So any of you ever had one of those “24-hour colds” where you very suddenly go from “I feel a little snotty all of a sudden” to “hugging the toilet while wearing two jackets and a thick blanket” and then right back to “I’m mostly fine”? I got started on one Thursday afternoon and after a horrible Friday I’m finally back to “okay-ish”.

How is this relevant to the MCU? I got tickets to Endgame for today rather than the Friday opening so that the whole family could see it; it is sheer luck that I’m not going to have to cancel these tickets and spend god-knows how long on spoiler-watch.

I'm seeing it with my family tonight. It's a late showing, and the movie's going to be long, but I'm glad I get to see it so soon. I've never been to a big movie like this on opening weekend before.

I don't feel like you have to watch EVERY MCU film to be able to hop in and appriciate Infinity War and Endgame.

My advice for Infinity War was that at bare minimum you could get away with watching just three movies before hand; at least one guardians film, either Civil War or Age of Ultron and then also Thor Ragnarok, that way you are at least introduced to all of the characters. But if you're being more rigorous watch all five of those films, and if you're being even more rigorous still, watch the first avengers film and the first two captain america films as well to complete those two trilogies.

I mean, in release order. Sure this list misses out a lot of stuff, but I think the point is you shouldn't have to feel obliged to watch twenty films to be able to take part in the current film event.

Infinity and Endgame together do have quite a few references you won't get (without going into spoilers Endgame loves a call-back), but as long as you get the characters (or are willing to have a few 'who's this guy?' moments) there's a lot which isn't essential.

Weird idea but I wonder if you could skip Age of Ultron. Avengers —> Civil War may fill you in on most of it. Though I'm more of a 'watch everything person.
