Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

For Hawkeye I would definitely pick him pulling the Offhand Backhand on one of the Chitauri ships in Avengers.
He had a lot of great moments in that film, before Whedon decided he should be a joke in Ultron.

Ultron introduces Hawkeye's family, and the fact he even has one is the best part of that character. It retroactively makes him the Team Dad of the Avengers.
Here's a recipe for Infinity Stone Cupcakes:
Human garbage fire Clint Barton doesn’t work so well in an ensemble versus a solo plus Kate character study and coming on the heels of his mind control by Loki when Dark World already played mental illness resulting from mind control trauma as a joke would not be the best take
Forever liveblogging the AvengersBut speaking of lines, as someone who loves getting his heart ripped to little pieces, why don't we share the ones we find the saddest?
And no "I don't feel so good", if only because it's too obvious.
So, my picks:
Bucky: "But I remember him..."
Tony: "When I drift off, I'll dream about you. It's alway you..."
Also Tony: "I don't care. He killed my mom".
I’ll admit I’m a little surprised at the glowing defense of Whedon’s “I have a bow and arrow lol I shouldn’t actually be here” approach to Hawkeye in Ultron, especially given the usual response to his other in-jokey habits in that movie, but okay. To each their own.
I still think he was far better utilized in Avengers 1 and Civil War, though. Neither movie felt they needed to be self deprecating in order to justify his presence, he was just there because he’s a major character and he deserved to be there. Plus both could think of better things to do with his screen time than try to game the audience with pointless tongue in cheek death flags.

The second part there sums up my problem there. They shouldn’t be canonizing that.
If Whedon as a writer/director legitimately thought the character is too weak to make a difference, why include him at all? And if he doesn’t, why even put that line in? To cater to fan jokes? He did this in the first movie with the “he’s adopted” line. Lol, I guess, but why?
For comparison, it’d be like if a Justice League movie centered Aquaman’s presence around the joke that he was useless, simply because it was a popular joke, even though it doesn’t make a lot of sense either character or plot wise. It’s only a thing if you make it a thing, and Whedon chose not only to do so, but to illustrate it.

I took it more as him acknowledging, that yes everything about the situation is crazy, including his choice of weapon, but he's gonna go out, fight and save people lives anyway. Not only that, Wanda can do more than he can.
More of a Dare to Be Badass speech than him saying man, I suck.
I get it: Fuck Whedon and all (though I still like AOU), but it seems like now people are actively searching for bad things about him at every turn.
One Strip! One Strip!

For lack of defining "new" heroes I'd pick:
I'd need to see the rest of this collaboration to decide on any of the others.
