Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Still in my MCU rewatch quest before touching Endgame next week. Here's all I have left:

1. Doctor Strange

2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

3. Thor: Ragnarok

4. Avengers: Infinity War

5. Ant-Man and the Wasp Stingers

Oh man, it is so fun how every third question that pops up on Quora is people asking why Endgame needs Captain Marvel, and if she can actually beat Thanos, and if she's the actual strongest Avenger, and why is she so strong, and on and on

And by funny, I mean it's awful. Arrest these fragile little piss babies.

I’m just saying Avengers Academy could be an exciting prospect cause Marvel hasn’t done the hero school yet.

It make for a great TV show especially since you wouldn't have to rely on bombastic end of the world/massive scenery destruction events.

Quora is like "What if Ask Reddit was an entire website and also terrible." Anyone can ask a question and anyone can answer and the "best" answers are supposed to be upvoted, but, honestly, sometimes all of the answers are terrible.

Not even the X-men have done the hero school properly yet. I mean, I am all for a Harry Potter like Superhero franchise.

From what I understand, My Hero Academia does the superhero school pretty well. Sky High (2005) was also pretty good.

How about they introduce the young heroes first, then make a team-up movie?

Like how they needed to introduce the Hulk, the Guardians and Ant-Man before they got their movies?

alliterator Since: Jan, 2001
#100710: Apr 17th 2019 at 1:20:39 AM

I'm pretty sure that the Hulk and Ant-Man had their own single movies first before having a team-up movie. And Guardians of the Galaxy is the outlier — it's the only MCU team movie outside of The Avengers so far.

And Captain Marvel. Only Comic book movie which made it past the billion without introducing the character first.

I kind of wonder if Assorted Young Superheroes would work better as a show just for sheer quantity of potential characters. Miles is probably covered by Spider-Verse and I kind of hope Kamala could get a movie but pretty much every young hero (Champions, two sets of Young Avengers, Academy) is on the table. I assume some would pop out of nowhere because the only ones we have set up for are being set up very slowly.

On my question about Angela here, if we're going for a "young heroes" someday, Angela has to be a part of it as a Composite Character with Thor Girl, albeit in-name and that she just has lightning powers and enhanced strength like Thor.

So, I hesitated a long time if I should post this or not, but will, it is kind of too funny to not share. For context apparently before Captain Marvel was released some guy with the telling name "Coach Red Pill" made a video about it impending box office doom. This video is not that, though, it is two guys reacting to his video, because as hilarious as his take already is, it is even more funny to listen to them taking apart his BS. Plus, I refuse to give this guy any clicks anyway. So, if you want to listen to some really delusional BS, this is the video for you.

Though it is also sad that a guy like this still has an audience. I mean...really? Especially considering how he talks about his own fans.

[up][up][up]In itself, it is not necessary that all members are previously introduced.

That is, an advantage of the tv series is that they can give more development to the characters.

For example Kid Loki does not need to have appeared previously, the writers can simply say that he is a clone of Loki and develop the character from that.

In the comics, though, he's not a clone of Loki. He is literally Loki's reincarnation. Also, just flippantly saying, "Oh, he's a clone" would bring up more questions than it answers. In Guardians of the Galaxy, we see Peter Quill's origin, but the others don't actually need to have their origins shown because they have been simplified down to "alien bounty hunters" and "alien daughter of Thanos" and "alien prisoner."

The characters in Young Avengers can't be simplified down in the same way, so it would be harder to do that.

I feel like the groundwork for Kid Loki is already laid, personally. Loki f*cking died in Infinity War. That's pretty much the one prerequisite needed to have Kid Loki show up.

Anything further that needs explaining about how he reincarnated as Kid Loki can be established in flashback by Ikol.

They could kind of try but some of them might need a good amount of changing. If it was a series, they'd probably establish their personalities and powers first then do a backstory per focus episode. Though some would be really hard to make work - for example, no idea if Iron Lad before introducing Kang would work.

We don't have the same kind of actual mythic build-up for the Asgardians that would make Loki reincarnating as Kid Loki fairly plausible but it just requires a bit more handwaving.

He had his hands on the Tesseract for a bit of time. Thats a decent start.

In itself, the concept of magic within the Asgardians (MCU) is for the most part advanced technology.(Clarke's Third Law and Magitek)

So by following that, Kid Loki could be a cloned body that was created by the original Loki, instead of being a reincarnation.

From what I understand, My Hero Academia does the superhero school pretty well.

One thing that's good about MHA is that it sidesteps the recurring plot thread about government regulation regarding superheroes by just having superheroes, well, work for the government, no questions asked. That's not to say there isn't any merit in that question ever, but it's nice to get something different for once given how overplayed it is.

It also helps that in the present of MHA most of the population has a Quirk.

Though the current plot arc has introduced a movement consisting of people who chafe at the regulations put in place on their use of Quirks. Basically they're Quirk lolbertarians. And the movement apparently has a number of Pro Heroes in it.

Off-topic (For the theme of the young avengers/ Academy, not for the MCU)

I hope that Spiderman gets better feats in upcoming films, maybe it sounds like a fanboy, but I do not like that Spiderman is weaker than Captain America.

He did his giant rubble pick up thing.

I don't think Cap could have done that? Probably? His big strength thing is keeping a helicopter from taking off single handedly?
