Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up]Ah yes, The Thousand. One of the most fucked up villains in Marvel. It's probably for the best that he didn't live past the story he was introduced in. His undignified death was very well deserved.

[up] Spider-Geddon recently introduced someone similar to the Thousand, though: meet Spiders-Man, a hive mind colony of spiders who take the form of Peter Parker. And they've spread their spiders throughout the multiverse now.

Spider-Girl posited that either the spider powers mutated when they were passed down or that they would be expressed differently by gender

Which is a little used device that I’m somewhat fascinated with. Sexually dimorphic powers or some such. Like how X-23 gets a foot claw instead of three hand claws

I’m mostly glad it’s not used so often because I feel that some unfortunate sexisms might sneak in with how the powers are differentiated but it’s interesting to think about how the same powers might differently manifest

I mean, Mayday's got a point.

Even she got an extra ability to make people stick to things (as opposed to her sticking to them) if I re-call.

She also revealed that the Spider-Sense, in addition to warning you of danger actually told you where an enemy was the least dangerous—a weak spot detector in other words.

Peter was kicking himself over that one, since she essentially revealed a whole new use for his own power that he never realized at all.

Getting back to the point, a little variation even from the same Spider doesn't shock me.

I believe people did get the organic webbing during both the animated and comic book Spider-Island too.

Oh there’s also how Miles got his venom sting and camouflage in exchange for... I don’t recall

But those were him specific powers since he got bitten by a different spider

The 90's animated series had as a major plot point the fact that the changes to Peter's body thanks to the spider bite weren't a one-shot deal. Aptly titled "The Neogenic Nightmare", that arc had poor Peter becoming more and more like a spider, culminating in his transformation into Man-Spider.

I think the Neogenic Nightmare was one of the first animated Myth Arcs.

All I know is that I don't really remember storylines like that in animation...though I suppose X Men did it too during their seasons, even if they didn't name the arcs.

The 90's X-Men animated series also did myth arcs. They had their own take on the Phoenix and Dark Phoenix arcs, they had the series-long struggle against mutant haters such as Gyrich and the Sentinels, and they had Mr. Sinister's machinations.

There's that guy who ate the spider like a dingus and turned into a massive colony of man-eating devil spiders.

Oh, hey, I remember reading that one.

Dude ate his own parents.

A shame we might prolly maybe only get Thousand in the games, not the shows or movies.

He sounds way to visibly fucked up.

Ah crap. We're probably not going to see any continuation of the Logan timeline with an X-23 film now, are we.

IIRC, we were never going to anyway. FOX considered the film to be a neat little one-off with no bearing on the greater continuity.

Hawkeye series confirmed for Disney+.”, with Renner’s involvement.

Looks like Kate Bishop is getting adapted.

Oh damn. If they adapt Matt Fraction's run (and yes, I know that's kind of impossible with Hawkeye having a family and all that), I will love it to death. Hell, use his family and still adapt the Fraction run. Make him a lovable loser with a family.

Maybe it'll finally get him some respect.

I swear, it's the usual thing on the internet where people shit on a character because they find it funny.

So if this is supposed to introduce Kate Bishop and the intention is to eventually have the Young Avengers, there's also a chance that the Scarlet Witch and Vision show will have Wiccan and Speed and the Loki show will bring in Kid Loki.

This song needs more love.

That would also solve the problem of "How do you make a Young Avengers movie without first introducing all of the characters, a la the films before The Avengers?" So we would get the Disney+ shows which would all lead up to a Young Avengers movie.

Also announced for Disney+.

“Marvel’s Hero Project” reveals the remarkable, positive change several young heroes are making in their own communities. These inspiring kids have dedicated their lives to selfless acts of bravery and kindness, and now, Marvel celebrates them as the true Super Heroes they are.

“Marvel’s 616” (working title) is an anthological documentary series exploring the intersection between Marvel’s rich legacy of stories, characters and creators and the world outside your window. Told through the lens of a diverse group of filmmakers, each documentary will dive into the rich historical, cultural and societal context that has become inseparable from stories of the Marvel Universe.

Of course, now I'm just waiting on a biographical mini-series called Stan and Jack, all about how Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the Marvel Universe.

Confirmed? Only "heard from sources"....

It's Variety. If they say it's happening, it's happening.

It'll be interesting if this leads to a Young Avengers movie. Since the Disney Plus shows are gonna have a more direct involvement from the movie division they may not suffer the same issues as "Never gonna be acknowledged" issues as the Netflix shows or Agents of SHIELD.
