Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Why should she keep up her disguise in a school full of mutants or when she is in a cell captured by people who know who she is (and which supposedly supresses powers btw).
Mystique is a character in dire need of a reboot. First Class did not deliver this.
A decision was made in the first X-Men movie that Mystique would always be naked in her base form because she was played by a supermodel and the filmmakers wanted fans to ogle her body. The rest of the movies have had this creative decision grandfathered in.
First Class had a chance to take a different approach on it. But they didn't, instead doubling down on it. "NAKED JENNIFER LAWRENCE IS A POLITICAL STATEMENT. Her sexy, sexy, nudity speaks to us all."
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Question, why is it a bad thing if a complete monster villain becomes a hero in an adaptation? Most people watching the movies won't know what he's like in the comics anyway.
She at least started wearing clothes more often in Apocalypse and I think she'll be clothed in Dark Phoenix.

I certainly hope so. The way they've tried to work the fanservice into the political message always came across to me as
- Mystique: I have important things to say about the oppression of minority groups.
- Producer: Uh-huh, that's neat, but can you take off your clothes? I want to watch your jubblies bounce while you're talking about whatever shit you're on about.

Mystique, what a meme. I'll watch First Class and Days of Future Pastnote and that's about it. The Deadpools and Logan are about all I need with that franchise.

Self-serious autistic trans gal who loves rock/metal and animation with all her heart. (she/her)I don't. But then, I always thought that the X-men movies were pretty sh... I always thought that they would have a way larger fanbase if someone did them right instead of churning out mediocre action movies.
Nevertheless, I am not in a hurry to get to the next version of them. Let this version finish. Let them be for a while. And then built them up again.
@windleopard- Thanks for sharing that article. That's good/interesting to know that it has to do with Endgame filming occurring before Captain Marvel, because although I didn't notice the difference until it was pointed out (and then it was really obvious), it seemed on the surface like it was a "male director versus female director thing" (cf. the different presentation of Wonder Woman and Amazons in the DCU movies).
That being said, for Watsonian reasons, I can justify the different look in Endgame as her looking a bit fancier as part of her status as the protector of the galaxy. That, and/or wanting to look nice for Valkyrie.
Also, as far as X Men goes, I don't really have any issues with making villainous characters heroic/more sympathetic in adaptation. However, at least in the case of Mystique, I felt that she was increasingly Jennifer Lawrence over time and decreasingly (a version of) the same character played by Rebecca Romijn, and more importantly, she, Charles, and Erik (and Wolverine too, natch) came to the dominate the movies to the determent of other characters, especially the non-white ones.
