Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

That DC hasn't tried a Animal Man movie is surprising, but maybe some day they will
have a listen and have a link to my discord server![]()
Can't be any worse than their Justice League movies.
It's painfully telling that their two headliners haven't have any good movies, while (barring poor Hal Jordan, who is probably the new Aquaman of the DCU while the actual Aquaman is now one of the coolest heroes around) all their other heroes are knocking it out of the park.

One Strip! One Strip!Could at least part of that be because people are done with Batman and Superman? They've been going on so long and had so many movies... fatigue must be setting in.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yeah. I love Big Blue, and I love Batman (though the latter is now more defined by the rich white guy beating up homeless people meme and the former just keeps getting the Beware the Superman deconstructions), but they kept going to that well too often and now people just roll their eyes at them.
Which is a shame because despite the controversy over how he handled everything with Zod (and all the stuff with Pa Kent) I liked Man of Steel. That scene where Clark is testing his powers for the first time is beautiful.
Especially the part where he accidentally crashes while trying to fly.
One Strip! One Strip!![]()
DC really should stick with Animation. Marvel has it's gems, but they've clearly found their real niche with live action, while DC churns out some good animation.
One Strip! One Strip!Man of Steel made $668m at the box office.
Batman v. Superman hit $874m.
Justice League made $658m.
That's not Avengers money, but it's not exactly Solo either. I think it may be a bit premature to be saying that audiences are clearly sick to death of Batman and Superman. Especially since the Dark Knight Trilogy wasn't so long ago, and even the much reviled Rises broke the billion-dollar boundary.
I think the explanation for why Wonder Woman and Aquaman made more money is because they're just better movies than Zack Snyder's dour edgelord-fests. And even then, Batman v. Superman did still outperform Wonder Woman.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Do they, though?
I mean, Superman does. Absolutely. But that's because he's barely been in any films in decades. A fresh approach was pretty much mandatory for him, since there are a lot of people who don't even know what the original approach was.
But, as I noted, The Dark Knight Rises made roughly $1.1 billion. The only DCEU film ever to be so popular with filmgoers is Aquaman. And of the trilogy, it's considered the shitty movie that sucks and everyone hates.
If the DCEU can only match the most reviled entry in the Dark Knight Trilogy after six attempts, then they were clearly doing something right with Batman before Snyder tried reinventing the wheel.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Batman and Superman don't need a fresh approach. They tried a fresh approach with Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman, and those movies sucked. Being excessively dark and edgy is a fresh approach for these characters.
Like I said earlier, the DCAU already did the perfect versions of Batman and Superman. What those characters need is just more of the same, don't reinvent the wheel. Just make Batman and Superman movies with the same tone, themes, and character already done in BTAS and STAS, and those films would completely resurrect Batman and Superman and make them the most popular comic book characters once again.
Iron Man and Captain America didn't become super popular in the MCU because the writers took those characters in a radical new direction, they became super popular because the people who made their movies understood what the core of those characters are, and they embraced these characters whole-heartedly.

...I don't re-call hearing that. I mean, Bane's silly voice is meme-worthy I'll admit, but when have people said Rises is the shitty part of the trilogy?
One Strip! One Strip! It wasn't something that started right away. Broadly, people didn't think it was good as TDK but thought it was a satisfying and emotional conclusion to Nolan's trilogy when it first came out.
It was only with time and some re-evaluation that people started to sour on the movie.
Where Snyder went wrong with Superman is that he missed the point that Superman's supposed to be a moral paragon. You're meant to look up to and be inspired by him. The moment Snyder asked the question, "Okay, but why wouldn't he be just killing f*ckers left and right?" he immediately telegraphed himself as the wrong person to be making a Superman film.
Most people have a natural aversion to killing people. Not wanting to kill people is something that doesn't need an explanation.
Where Snyder went wrong with Batman is that he tried to match the tone of the Dark Knight Trilogy but missed a crucial fundamental point: Batman is supposed to be the glimmer of light amidst the overbearing darkness. He feigns dark, murderous edginess but he's not himself dark, murderous, and edgy. He's a spotlight, lighting the way through the fog and murk. Incorruptible.
Snyder overshot the Dark Knight tone and wound up at "Everything sucks and everyone's shitty and your heroes are all psychotic bastards." And. Well. That didn't really work out very well.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I for my part am tired to see Batman grumbling in the dark, getting outshined by his villains. I want the Batfamily, damnit.
And Snyder's approach wasn't new, he was just using the Batman approach for Superman.
But we are getting kind of off topic here...

He was attempting to use the Batman approach. See above, re: Snyder didn't really get the Dark Knight Trilogy.
In Batman Begins, the whole conflict with the League of Shadows is kicked off when Bruce cannot bring himself to execute a criminal. Even right here at the beginning of it all, Bruce's aversion to taking a life is clear and evident.
The whole point of Man of Steel was because Snyder felt like we needed to have a clear and unambiguous justification for why Superman doesn't like killing people. The entire movie was crafted to lead up to that fateful moment when Superman breaks Zod's neck and decides he hates the feeling of it.
Because Christopher Nolan knew that Batman needed to be the symbol of hope, justice, and righteousness in the otherwise dark and dreary setting he crafted in his Gotham. While Snyder crafted both his Metropolis and his Superman to be DARK DARK EDGY DARK.

Snyder has not helped matters by blowing off fans who don't want their heroes to be fascist murderers. He even describes watching his films as "losing your virginity."

The whole last act is actually just an adaptation of Grant Morrison's last issue of Animal Man, only with Joe and Anthony Russo in place of Grant Morrison.
