Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Who says that they have done it for 20 years?

Nobody, but I feel like it would screw up continuity to say that, "Oh, these folks that were acting completely normal during Infinity War [for example] were actually Skrulls in ultra-deep cover." What I'm saying is that we could introduce the Secret Invasion after Endgame wraps up as a new story, with a fresh infiltration.

@Swanpride: I actually thought about the Skrulls being used in a similar manner to the demons of Devilman: Crybaby, taking the form of politicians, religious leaders and other influential people to foster prejudice and paranoia in order to weaken the human race.

"Divide and Conquer", see.

[up][up] Yes, that was my thought, too. We have now established who they are and what their limitations are. And I actually think that the Black Widow movie would be PERFECT to introduce the concept with a big surprise twist towards the end.

Is it confirmed that the Black Widow movie is going to be an origin story/prequel? The same continuity issues pertain there as they would anywhere else: it would be weird for her to learn that Skrulls are infiltrating the planet and then hang out with the Avengers for years with no mention of it whatsoever. Now, if her movie is set after Endgame, then sure, it would be an ideal plot.

[up] No it isn't. There are fans who still want to know what happened in Budapest, and I really, really hope that Marvel won't listen to them and instead move forward with the character. Not that I would mind some flashbacks. But I think with the limitation they put on the Scrulls it is made pretty clear that it would be near impossible for them to hide for THAT long.

Secret Invasion should not happen in the MCU.

Until we actually see Endgame, it's almost impossible to say what will happen to the overall MCU story. Spider-Man: Far From Home notwithstanding, what happens there will define the course of the universe moving forward, so it's way too early to start making predictions about which plots Phase 4 will use.

FFH presents a unique quandary, of course. Sony doesn't want to be locked into continuity with the rest of the MCU, but it's impossible to see that trailer and conclude anything other than that Endgame pushes a universal Reset Button, possibly with a few missing heroes (depending on the fate of the OG Avengers).

This saddens me because it feels like it cheapens Infinity War.

Not really. No matter WHAT happens the characters will remember.

Will they, though? In the FFH trailer, Peter certainly doesn't act like someone who went to space, fought a Mad Titan, died, then magically came back to life a few hours ago.

I know I'm probably overthinking this, but the tone is completely incongruent.

Carol, Black Widow aso will remember for sure. I kind of hope that the other characters will remember, too, but in a way, the pain of the left behind is bigger than the pain of the ones who vanished.

Depends on which characters — the Avengers who are still alive? Sure. But the ones who were dusted probably won't remember what happened to them anymore than the half of the world's population will remember turning to dust.

It will be like Secret Wars (2015) in the Marvel Universe: people will remember that the world almost ended, but then it didn't and they kept going on with their lives.

But you have still those characters who had this deeply traumatic experience.

Though for me it doesn't matter anyway. Infinity war will still mean the same to me because I will always feel with the characters on screen and they don't know that there will be a way out. Well, other than Doctor Strange that is. Who, btw, will remember too, since he always sees all options.

Even if they don't remember that deeply traumatic experience? Because for Spider-Man, it appears that the only traumatic part of his trip to Titan was the "turning to dust" part. Yes, he fought Thanos, but he wasn't hurt or even wounded by him and ended up saving a bunch of people's lives. If not for the "turning to dust" part, he would have been perfectly fine.

For Tony, though? Yes, Tony will definitely still be traumatized.

I’m twitchy because I don’t like the entire concept. Spider-Man belongs in NYC. Period. No world travel unless it’s just brief scenes.

Making MCU Peter a more worldly character? Giving him a "fish out of water" character development angle? Keeping him away from the Avengers as a justification for them to stay away from his standalone film?

I mean after five movies of Peter in New York, I think a change in scenery for even just one film was warranted.

There’s only 2 movies with Peter in NYC and one is animated. I don’t know what other 5 movies you’re referring to. tongue
