Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Just had a horrible thought: What if Dave Bautista already convinced the Russos to kill him off in Endgame? Wouldn't that just be the irony to end all ironies?

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.

Seeing as he used his continued presence in the MCU as collateral in order to campaign for them to bring Gunn back, asking to be killed off would defeat the purpose of that.

[up][up] I doubt that would happen.

His stated redline was always that he would walk if they didn't at least use Gunn's script, and Disney never said they weren't and I believe it was reported that Gunn's script was indeed going to be used a month or two back.

The final decision would of probably been technically left to the director they ultimately hired, but that's a non-issue now.

The man is doing very well.

Speaking of Thanos using the Infinity Gauntlet on his junk: I present to you the Codpiece. A Doom Patrol villain that I hope to hell shows up in the show.

Please King Ban from Arthurian Mytlogy tried to steal King Arthur’s beard.

It’s not that shocking.

I've seen him before, at least. I think the collection I have includes his appearances.

Though, in terms of Doom Patrol wtf, nothing beats the Love Glove. Mostly because of where his powers came from and what he's a reference to.

I actually had a really fun time explaining to someone who had never heard of them what Doom Patrol was like the other day.

What is the Doom Patrol?
Oh man. Oh boy. The Doom Patrol is what you get when you mix the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and a whole lot of drugs together. Created in in 1963 (ironically a few months before the X-Men premiered, actually), the Doom Patrol was a group of misfists, outcasts, and freaks put together by their leader, Dr. Niles Caulder or "the Chief," a wheelchair-bound genius. The original team included:
  • Cliff Steel, also known as Robotman, a race car driver who was in a horrible crash where his brain only survived and was transplanted into a robot body.
  • Larry Trainor, also known as Negative Man, a test pilot whose body was invaded by a "negative spirit" during an upper atmosphere test flight. He can release the Negative Spirit when he wants and the Spirit can do all sorts of things, except it then needs to go back into his body within 60 seconds or he'll die. Oh and he's also radioactive, so he always wears bandages, like a mummy.
  • Rita Farr, also known as Elasti-Girl, a former actress who was exposed to weird cloud of chemicals that caused her to shrink and grow.
Their enemies included the immortal General Immortus, the alien Garguax, Animal-Vegetal-Mineral Man, and the Brotherhood of Evil, led by Monsieur Mallah (a French anarchist ape) and the Brain (a literal brain in a jar). At the end of their Silver Age run, their creators killed them all off. (It didn't stick.) In 1989, Grant Morrison started writing for the Doom Patrol and turned the weirdness up to eleven. He introduced:
  • Crazy Jane, who had 64 different personalities and each one had a different superpower.
  • Rebis, a fusion of Larry Trainor, the Negative Spirit, and a nurse.
  • Dorothy Spinner, a young girl with a monkey face who could summon her imaginary friends into real life.
  • Flex Mentallo, a Charles Atlas parody who got his power from flexing his muscles (and when he did, the words "Hero of the Beach" would appear).
  • Danny the Street, a living sentient street who was also a flamboyant cross-dresser. (How is a street a cross-dresser? Well, he had hardware stores with pink ribbons and balloons in the windows.)
Together, they fought against the Brotherhood of Dada (the recreated Brotherhood of Evil, but this time intent on spreading madness), the Men from N.O.W.H.E.R.E., the Cult of the Unwritten Book, and the Candlemaker.

Or just watch this promo for the show:

Basically a superhero Ragtag Bunch of Misfits, with emphasis on "misfit".

With the added complication that the guy who founded the group and brought them together takes all of the Unfortunate Implications and negative Alternative Character Interpretation of Professor Xavier and Reed Richards and plays them for all they are worth.

Fun fact by the way: Beast Boy from the Teen Titans started out as a Doom Patrol member. In fact, they kept that in the cartoon, so the Doom Patrol made a cameo in one episode.

But back on Marvel, I kinda hope to see Dr Doom show up in the MCU now... if they can handle him well.

[up] On that note, if the Fantastic Four will be introduced, I think it has to be in a Captain Marvel sequel in order to tie with the Skrulls for Super Skrull.

I don't see why. Different groups of Skrulls with different motivations can turn up across franchises.

Somehow it's only just occurred to me that we've had Shazam and Captain Marvel in the headlines. Was that intentional?

The Doom Patrol is what you get when you mix the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and a whole lot of drugs together.

...so that might be why I've never wanted to give them a chance. The X Men I've grown used to after several films but I still don't like the Fantastic Four. The superhero family dynamic is something that only The Incredibles has made me like. Don't care for the Power Pack either, or most of the Superman/Lois and Superman/family stories.

I'm only curious if Doom Patrol means that these characters won't be appearing in Titans again, or if the shows are disconnected.
