Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I can buy that. It is possible that he came to realize how horrible what he said was, but also never thought to bring it up until he was forced out (maybe out of shame).
I mean, in the end we'll have to judge on actions, because we can't read his thoughts.
One Strip! One Strip!Fair point, but the kind of people the Got G cast is certainly paints Gunn in a far better light than Trump.
Not that that's hard, but you see my point.
Besides, the way Disney went about firing Gunn was a humongous dick move: most of Marvel found out about it at the same time as the audience, despite the fact that having one of their most successful directors fired thanks to a bunch of alt-right nutters would seriously damage their brand.
Do keep in mind he might've just forgot about it.
I mean, most people don't obsess over stupid shit they did in their past unless something happens to remind them of it.

As I said back then: I felt that Disney did the right thing due to being Disney. They need to be careful when it comes to paedophilia, more so than any other studio. And they couldn't have waited because then they would have been accused of having only bowed under "public pressure" if there had been something to the accusations.
I am also not opposed to them rehiring Gunn, partly because he took his "punishment" gracious and didn't make weak excuses other than saying that he isn't that guy anymore.
Though I do think that Gunn is sometime unconsciously slipping into sexism in Got G - Ie, ever noticed that all fighter pilots of the Nova Corps are male, while the female members walk around in short skirts holding papers like glorified secretaries? - I also think that he is trying to do better.

The ironic thing about James Gunn getting fired was always that it was the antithesis to the actual movies that where being made. Star-Lord, Tony Stark, Thor, Strange... They where all assholes who learned to be better people. James was a perfect example of that: Someone who realized that their impact on the world could be better so they decided to do better.
I guess the redemption arc has gone full circle?
You are not alone.I still think that firing James Gunn (or pretending to) had nothing to do with the quality of his character and everything to do with the "Disney Director Makes Pedophilic Jokes" headline that gained steam around the time.
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if they're sort of side-eyeing Chris Pratt now.

This song needs more love.
The reports state he'll do both movies. Squad first, then Guardians. Besides I don't think Marvel has an issue with people working on DC stuff simultaneously.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherWhat did he do?
One Strip! One Strip!See.
Starlord is an asshole who ruins everything.
I told you guys.
But yeah, that's not cool Chris. Stop that.
One Strip! One Strip! For context, it came up in a debate with Ellen page
. It's entirely possible his chapter might not be as bigoted as others but it's still worrying that he's going to go this far to defend them.
I don't think Pratt is a homophobe himself. The things I've heard him say on the subject have been reasonably supportive and he even said he thought pairing Star-Lord and Thor would be pretty hot. This seems more down to naivete and idealism rather than hate or bigotry. The fact that he's doubling down so hard though makes me think it might just be willful ignorance.
On the subject of Bautista, I'm surprised he hasn't reacted yet. Let's hope he can handle this thing graciously. He's seemed pretty touchy recently, even getting into a Twitter feud with Stephen Amell of all people (though that may just be him acting the heel even when not in the ring)
The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.I guess the redemption arc has gone full circle?
I would argue that Gunn went the way of Spider-Man, personally. Getting hired at Disney made him reconsider his public image. There's no indication that he wouldn't have kept right on doing what he was doing had Disney not taken the chance on him.
He was a nobody and kind of a shitty nobody, but then suddenly he became a somebody. And his shittiness as a nobody came up to bite him, and he was like, "Shit, if I'm going to be a somebody, I need to do better than this."
Gunn learned with his first controversy that with great public visibility, there must always come great self-awareness. To be fair, many famous people never seem to take that to heart the way he did.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.(Is waiting for Roseanne Barr to tweet if this means ABC will hire her back soon)
Like creepy stories? Check out my book!Don't be too excited. If Gunn does Suicide Squad first it means that we will wait at least two years for the Got G movie.

Counterpoint: Donald Trump. The amount of loyalty a person inspires is not directly related to the moral goodness of his character.
But I have read his tweets in question and while I did find them offensive, I can also respect that people change. I was not opposed to Disney firing him on the grounds that pedophilia really is a serious issue and dreadfully inappropriate for a company like Disney. But if Disney thinks he's better than that, then I'm not opposed to hiring him back, either.
