Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

So if this is for real, then they bring him back to finish what he started.
I'm genuinely surprised. He did say those things, although he apparently apologized well before the comments became known (I think, it's a little confusing) which is more than most people would do. He realized on his own what awful things he said and all, but Disney is still associating with someone who's kinda drawing the wrong sort of attention, not just from right wing assholes, but possibly others who might object to his comments and don't need to be right wing assholes to do so.
The best he has going for him is positive word of mouth from people who've worked with him, which is a good thing. In these kind of situations, what others say about you is very helpful...provided they aren't also undergoing similar tragedies.
One Strip! One Strip!I guess this was a combination of taking the time to figure out how much truly is to the story (after all, now nobody can accuse Disney of being careless about the accusations), gauging the landscape and, well, maybe they also tested out with Captain Marvel how deep the influence of those Trolls truly runs. Turns out: Not deep at all.
The Tweets he apologized for were different from the ones which they dug up the second time around. Above all, they didn't contain any paedophelia jokes.

The only reason the trolls didn't have much of an impact is that one of them didn't actively try to keep people from watching or enjoying it.
By not hiring him back they're also feeding the trolls responsible for his firing in the first place. The trolls who dredged up his tweets are IMO the kinds of people who believe in the opinions he espoused there but unironically and to a worse degree. So whatever negative backlash they receive for rehiring is miniscule in comparison to letting those right-wing sickos "win".
Interestingly, the decision to bring him back was made months ago. There was never a true search for a replacement.
Which begs the question: did they actually not want this news to go public?

x3 - Apt metaphor especially considering the involvement of Batista in stumping for him.
Ha, that's amazing. They totally had this planned from the beginning. I love that the alt-right trolls win less than nothing from all of this. Fuck them.

This song needs more love.I suspect that they waited for a good moment to announce it. They couldn't have found a better time. Within the fandom, the Anti-SJW blew what little credibility they had, plus, they are currently all busy explaining away the box office of Captain Marvel, and outside of the fandom, well, I guess everyone is paying more attention to New Zealand. And within Disney the Fox merger is complete, so they don't have to worry over scandals anymore.

I doubt it was planned, per se. I think that Disney just didn't want to be put in a situation vis-a-vis Amazing Spider-Man series in that they couldn't figure how how to move the franchise on without Gunn.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So, the Tweets he was fired over didn't contain the paedophelia? I've always been a bit confused on that.
So...on the one hand, we know Guardians will be in good hands...but...I mean, he said those things. He's apologized (though only for one set, so that means that you could argue he didn't for another unless you're generous), but is that enough? Is it sincere?
In this current climate, should we be allowing those things to stand. People are getting lambasted for far worse right now (deservedly so), but many are also getting away with it.
I really don't know how to feel about this. He's also getting so much support and I'm like...is this right?
One Strip! One Strip!
x9 That Disney was willing to humor the alt-right trolls even for a moment instead of giving them the amount of attention they deserved (aka nothing at all) is still too much. Although ultimately this is a net win for superhero movies in terms of DC now getting to have a known successful director like Gunn do a film for them.
IIRC the tweets he apologized for had more to do with grotesque misogyny and homophobia than pedophilia.

Ok. Which set came first, and do we assume when he apologized for one, he was also apologizing for the other?
Also, I believe he did that years before he was caught didn't he? Cause if he did it on his own that's a good thing cause he recognized his mistake and owned up to it.
One Strip! One Strip!
The tweets he apologized for had more to do with grotesque misogyny and homophobia than paedophilia. The tweets he was fired over joked over paedophilia (and naturally he apologized for those, toom once they were dug up), but they were years old James Gunn used to be a so called edge-lord, but he stopped being one pretty much the moment Disney hired him. But I guess he deserves the benefit of the doubt just like everyone else does.

Honestly, I prefer to have them overreact than just dismissing accusations.

When Gunn was initially hired, a blog post surfaced where he ranked the Most F*ckable Superheroes. There were objections about a man who has documented lengthy and raunchy ideas about which superhero looks best in a thong - ideas peppered with misogynistic and homophobic jokes - being hired by Disney to direct an MCU film.
When this came to light, Gunn issued a public apology for the blog. This is what people are talking about when they say he's already apologized for controversial statements he made in the past.
The pedophilia jokes were uncovered more recently by Alt-Right trolls and had never been addressed prior. So he has apologized for his controversial jokes, but they were different, arguably less controversial jokes than the ones he came under fire for more recently. Does that make sense?

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Considering how his reaction to the whole "scandal" was to simply graciously accept his resignation and move on, and the sheer output of love and support from the cast, I'm pretty sure the apologies were sincere.
The kind of person who does those kind of jokes is not the person who inspires that kind of loyalty.

YAY I get to be excited about GOG 3 again.
You are not alone.
