Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I like the idea that One of Clint's children inherited his abilities better than there are just random people sharing his skill. I mean, he isn't just good, he never misses.

Superhero fatigue will only kick in when people feel either Marvel or DC have exhausted their catalogue, in the many years that we've had comic book movies, they've scarcely touched the tip of the iceberg where that's concerned.

I prefer that it’s not his kid who becomes Kate Bishop. Kate is like Barbara Gordon, she got involved because she saw problems and decided to help and didn’t care if the Avengers themselves insisted she stop.

She actually used to be a jack of all stats, having raided Swordsman’s sword, Mockingbird’s batons, and Clint’s bow and used them equally competently

But she’s doubled down on archery after Clint came back to life and beat her in an archery contest and took his bow back so she had to break into his apartment and steal it back

It also probably helps that she started hanging out with him and they practiced together

Clint had a predisposition to archery but it was practice practice and more practice that made him the best

BTW, which characters were confirmed to have died offscreen?

There's Galaga Guy, and Natalie Portman, who else?

“Kid of Avenger who becomes Avenger” is already covered by Cassie Lang anyway.

Re superhero fatigue: people have been talking about it for years, but the box office has given no indication that the general public is sick of superheroes. Just the opposite.

Most of the time it feels like the people talking about it are projecting their own dissatisfaction and saying that everyone will soon feel the same way, when there's no evidence to suggest otherwise.

Despite people saying marvel movies are formulaic I think they do a good enough job that every mini franchise offers its own things

Galaga Guy is gone? Noooooooo....!!!! Say it isn't so....

Yeah, the box office shows clearly that the interest isn't weaning at all. I mean, Captain Marvel has not just made it past the 500 million mark yesterday, she also pushed the MCU past the 18 billion mark for the whole franchise.

18 billion! For, what, 21 movies? It's just crazy.

Honestly, I am not worried that people will get sick of superhero movies. I Am, however, worried that they will have a hard time doing bigger than the Infinity Gems storyline, not to mention they will have to continue without their Big Three. That won't be easy.

Let's put it this way: the Michael Bay Transformers movies were repetitive, formulaic, and critically panned, but they still made bank over and over again. The public is certainly not showing signs of collectively wearying of superheroes, and Marvel is actually putting out good films. I think they'd have to release several duds in a row and DC would have to keep flopping for anyone to reasonably declare the era over.

@Swanpride: That averages out to about 850 million per movie.

...Christ, no wonder Disney is buying out the world.

And this doesn't work with an actual child of the Avengers why exactly?

Because heroism isn't a genetic trait and you don't have to be an Avenger's child to be considered a hero. Otherwise Peter would be Tony's son in this continuity. Also, Clint's skills aren't super powers so Kate doesn't have to be his daughter to be on par with him. And if the theory that his family is dead is true, then him training her becomes heartwarming.

I wouldn't hate making Clint's daughter a Kate replacement but I do think it would be a bit of a downgrade; Kate's a pretty good badass normal and compared to most of the YA being heroic legacies with inherited powers I like that she just decided to be a hero

The MCU can't continue forever but if each individual movie is still good, it probably still has a while left in it

The Average will be even better once Endgame makes around 2 billion (which it most likely will).

[up][up] Being an Avenger isn't, but being a particularly talented archer might be.

You'll get a mix out of actual children of the Avengers and new young characters anyway.

Being an Avenger isn't, but being a particularly talented archer might be.

Based on what exactly? We don't even know if Clint inherited his archery skills from somebody.

Eyesight is largely genetic.

Not that it is impossible to be a good Archer with bad eyesight, but with the near supernatural aim Clint has, it is likely a factor.

As a former archery teacher I will say: it ain’t that hard to learn. Just make your form consistent and your aim will improve. Most kids I taught started out unable to even pull the bow on the first day and by the end of the week they’d be piercing through the targets and burning through arrows at startling rates.

I thought Archery was more difficult than say guns (which is one of the reasons the latter replaced the former).
