Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

So why did they change the cat's name to Goose?

Probably because it's Mar-vell's pet in the film.

Wanted to make it a Top Gun reference instead of a Star Wars one, I guess.

Maybe a Star Wars reference would be considered too self-indulgent by Disney at this point. [lol]

You are not alone.

I dunno, Black Panther got away with a reference to Disneyland.

Back from watching Captain Marvel. I loved it. I REALLY loved it. I think it's the best MCU origin movie, and one of the best MCU films overall.

Coulson has the monopoly on star Wars references. But I guess he didn't really have an opportunity.

The MCU is getting a "What If?" series for Disney +:

We have exclusively learned that Marvel Studios will be producing a new television series for the Disney+ streaming service based on the popular What If comic book series. The new animated show will be overseen by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios, but the stories will not be canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hit the jump to learn more about the What If TV series.

Like the comics, this animated anthology series will provide stories that explore how the Marvel Cinematic Universe might have unfolded if key moments in its history had not occurred as they did in recognized canon. For example, one of the episodes will adapt What If? Vol.1 #47, which explored the idea of “What if Loki had found the hammer of Thor?”

The idea is that they could potentially have some of the main actors from the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe movies reprise their roles in the animated series, which would imagine alternate possibilities from another dimension. The time commitment for voice acting is a whole lot less than for live-action productions, which could accommodate some of the biggest Marvel talent. The series would function as an anthology, just like the comic book series, with each episode tackling a different premise.

I have confirmed the information above with three separate sources. Currently, it’s unclear if they will use any other storylines from the comics for inspiration other than the one mentioned above. It’s possible that many of the scenarios will be entirely new, and we know that they will be based on what we have seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and not the comic canon.

[up] A cartoon on What If?

I'm already wondering if they’ll have an episode explaining what if Steve signed the Sokovia Accords when he had the chance or spilled the beans to Tony about Bucky killing his parents...

Or maybe an episode on what if Thor went for Thanos' head?

I remember reading a What If? comic about Wolverine getting turned into a vampire. It made for a good read. This has some excellent potential.

An animated "What If?" sounds pretty awesome, since they can revisit the films without spending millions of dollars.

An "What If" where Howard found Steve after WWII, you could make a whole season on that.

Neat, I've specifically wanted this concept (though I expected another comics run rather than an animated series)

There's a bevy of possibilities for MCU What If? stories

While some might go for the obvious ones, I propose What If? Gamora had actually gone left?

"What if Gamora had actually gone left?"

Nothing would have changed. Thanos had already laid his trap for the Guardians using the Reality Stone. He knew exactly where they were and what they were doing; he was just indulging them for the sake of proving that Gamora really cared about him.

...oh yeah.

Forgot about that.

Oh. How about What if all the Guardians had gone with Thor?

Sure, Strange, Tony and Peter would probably be dead, but most of them except for Tony ended up dead anyway.

And if they'd gone with Thor, they could have gotten the message from Nebula and brought him with them to the battle on Titan then went to Earth.

That would make for a good one, yes. Indeed, I thought of it, then ninja-edited it into my post just after you replied, then took it out when I read your reply. [lol]

Edit: Thanos didn't go to Titan until after he had the Soul Stone. I don't know if he planned the specific order in which he'd acquire them, but if he sat around on Knowhere for long enough without the Guardians showing up, he'd smell a rat. Would he chase them down? I don't know.

It should be entirely possible to get a scenario where he doesn't get the soul stone, but if he still has the other 5 it still wouldn't go great

Him not getting the Soul Stone is probably affected by Nebula never getting caught by Thanos (thus he has no way to force Gamora to talk) or, as I suggested, Gamora never getting caught by not going to Nowhere.

...So maybe if Gamora and Rocket swapped places?
