Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I saw the feminist themes quite clearly as well, but I didn't think they dominated the movie or interfered with my enjoyment of it. Quite the contrary: it was nice to see Carol shoving off the patronizing "women should think, not feel" dogma.
That particular conversation goes well beyond this thread, and indeed we have at least one topic in OTC for it. Suffice it to say that certain types of speech are beyond what we consider normal discourse, and should be banned in public areas.

Oh, then we are on the same page.
Honestly, it was so obvious to me, but I guess you need to have some awareness about how sexism works to see and understand what the movie is doing.
But I guess we run into the danger to go too spoilery so...
looks like the box office will be adjusted up once the final numbers are in.

Ahem.
Even some pundits are getting into the fun. Paul Krugman's NYT column published a piece today called "The Power of Petty Personal Rage"
, using Captain Marvel to illustrate how the right-wing in America today is dominated almost entirely by petty rage over tiny slights that seem, to them, to diminish their personal power as white males.
We should move forward and also kick Confederate ass as well, if ya ask me.
Where's my Alternate History game where the Confederacy won the CW and I play as a black soldier drowing Confederates in their own piss?
Suffice to say, you are gravely mistaken. Your own opinions were once subject to exactly the same censorship; how foolish to throw away the rope you used to get where you are.
Nothing else to say about that.

I can't say that the whole idea of silencing people you disagree with sits well with me. Not even the scummiest of scumbags, not 4chan, not Nazis, nobody. So long as those idiots are free to vent their worthless words into the wind, my right to free speech remains utterly beyond doubt. The whole "punch a Nazi" thing seems exactly as unamerican to me as being a Nazi.
Obviously illegal activity should be dealt with, such as 4chan's reputation for illegal porn. But that's a separate matter from what everyone here deems "trolling" - no, it's just stupid people with stupid opinions, which they are entitled to, as much as you are yours.
