Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

As for Captain America Steve Rogers meeting pre-serum Steve Rogers...

Captain America: Steve...I'm going to buy you a sandwich. All the sandwiches.

(A reference to the scene of Steve's transformation where the Senator looks at pre-Serum Steven and remarks that someone ought to buy him a sandwich)

It also reminds me of one of the running gags of old CinemaSins videos, before they got all serious and people started yelling at them.

Edit: [up][up][up] Seriously? They already pulled a Mental Time Travel shenanigan during the reboot for MK9, so they're doing a real one for 11? I'm glad I only watch LPs of the story modes of those games.

There is a storyline where various Avengers are plucked out of the timestream: it's called Avengers Forever. And also Ultron Forever. Basically, if it has "forever" in the title, it means "characters are plucked from different time periods."

11 is basically the consequence for 9's time travel shenanigans.

In 9, a god f*cked with the timeline in order to undo a Bad Future. In the process, he offended another god who is actually the time god. She is now coming calling like, "WTF, bro?"

The story arc for the recent MK games is "Raiden borks everything up".

Are you kidding? The rich lore, characters, and storyline is the best thing about Mortal Kombat, the thing that sets it apart from other fighting games. The best decision they ever made was to emphasize the storytelling, something they've been trying to do with varying degrees of success since Deadly Alliance in 2002.

[up]Nah, the best decision they made was to tone down the fanservice in MK X after going overboard with it in MK 9.

That is true!

Emphasizing the story mode is, in fact, the second best decision they ever made.

Is the Agent Carter short film still canon? I mean, for future films, is it still feasible to reuse the Zodiac organization as they were used in that short film?

Also, [nja]

In terms of worldwide opening weekends, it's sandwiched between Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Sixth highest grossing opening weekend of all time.

By Marvel standards, it's above Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron and below Avengers: Infinity War.

For domestic opening weekends, it's in slot 18. Above Hunger Games and below Rogue One. For Marvel, it's between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Iron Man 3 - which, despite its contentious reputation, put a lot of asses in seats at the box office.

Sad thing is, haters aren't stopping yet. Some are saying second weekend will see a huge drop (which as Swanpride said will probably happen but is normal for Marvel movies). Some say the good reviews are bots and theaters actually were empty. And Geek + Gamers acknowledges the movie did good, but made a video to explain why that's bad news, somehow. This is just... sad.

Eh, Iron Man 3 was riding on the wave of The Avengers, its box office doesn't mean much.

As for [up][up][up], pretty sure the series has displaced the short film in the Canon.

[up]Right now I'm content to just lie back and laugh at their delusions.

[up] That is true. I'm just saying, "Underperformed Iron Man 3 at the box office" needs some context to bat away the assumptions that might come with it. On its own, it doesn't sound as impressive as it actually is.

Some say the good reviews are bots and theaters actually were empty.

My theater was packed and the film got a standing ovation.

Two, actually. The first one was for the Stan Lee tribute at the beginning and the second was the actual closing credits.

You know, I hated Iron Man 3 when it came out, and while my hatred has calmed down, I still don't like the movie. But in hindsight, I am glad it did work. Marvel movies have come so far since Iron Man 1...

My theater wasn't packed, but it was Saturday matinee. It was full enough considering. And I am seriously thinking about seeing the film twice in theater, which I never do.

One thing that's odd: there was no Endgame trailer ahead of it. Every other upcoming superhero film got one, so the omission was stark and glaring. Intentional, perhaps?

There was when I saw it. It made watching the mid-credits scene all the more chilling.

Figured as such but as I asked, is re-using Zodiac still feasible?

I am still mad about Loki and Scarlet Witch taking over the TV division while Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher go in the toilet, especially with LC and IF ending with Sequel Hook's.

To be honest, i feel Carol in this movie is a bit meh. But i'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt since it is her first showing. Then again, comics Carol is also meh, so they did a good job staying faithful.

It took a while for people to care about Thor after all.

[up][up] Hey, at least according to the website WeGotItCovered, there's a chance that the Netflix shows will migrate to Hulu or FX. They just have to wait two years...and hope that the actors have room in their schedules...and Marvel TV has money in its budget.

You know, filming in New York must be expensive, so perhaps they could save money by doing what the Arrowverse does and film in Vancouver?
