Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

To be more clear, "SJW" originated among less militant leftists who were tired of extremist behavior and coined it to call out the people who engaged in Don't Shoot the Message behavior (e.g., infamously, the kinds of people who would claim that those who used the term "homophobia" were ableist because the suffix -phobia was insensitive to people with real phobias, or the kinds of people who harass others for enjoying "unwoke" shows and ships, Legend of Korra and Frozen being common culprits at the time) without slandering leftism in general.
It was around 2014 or so that it took off with the "mainstream" due to that event that will not be mentioned, and ended up getting hijacked by those who wanted to slander any kind of social justice activism as extreme, at which point the people who started using it have largely abandoned the term.

There is one youtuber who calls the people raging against Captain Marvel SJW (basically out of the "they are exactly what they rage against" perspective), which I don't find helpful at all, because those people have zero interest in social justice. But we could call the SIW - Social Injustice Warriors.
Or we could simply call them what they are: Sexists!

I think the term "Social Justice Warrior" has been in use since the 90s, actually, but some dude whose name I don't remember wrote an article where he calls out people who use social justice issues as a way of self-promotion (which, if we're honest, probably exist to this day), naming people who actually care "Social Justice Workers".
The rest is more or less as you said.
I think we are banned from calling it by name.
As an aside, though, it is a pity that "ethics in journalism" was turned into a giant dogwhistle, because gaming media really is unbelievably corrupt, but now the well is poisoned and it's impossible to talk about it without summoning forth the worst of humanity.
Which is why the subject was banned from the fora in the first place.
Oh well, not like I ever wanted to become a mod
.
But to take things back into track: best single track of the MCU: which is yours?
Personally, I have a particular fondness for the Winter Soldier theme, which is one of the few that truly stuck with me. It's just so menancing with a hint of madness to it, which sums the WS persona perfectly.
It is big enough that even I am aware of it, and I am not a gamer at all. Though I don't think that it is a surprise that the main voice against Captain Marvel is called "geeks and gamers".
Thankfully the only thing studios care about is box office.
It's brilliant! Frankly the whole soundtrack of The Winter Soldier is criminally underrated. I also low Take a Stand and, from The First Avenger, Triumphant Return. The track just screams "Patriot!!!!!".

Speaking of box office, ho is it doing so far ? I saw that the movies audience score on Rotten Tomatoes has increased from 32 to a little more than 50, but the haters are still behaving like they were proven Correct and talking about « the aftermath » as if the movie failed and that would change things for Marvel. I still can’t wait for this joke to end
Box office mojo just projected that it will hit 152 million in the NA box office
. Obviously that's with an estimate for Sunday, but Sunday actuals rarely change the total by more than a few million.
That an overwhelming success by any reasonable standard. If the worldwide numbers land where they were being projected, then the movie will be considered profitable by the end of it's opening weekend.
It probably won't change anything about those people.
Note that haters still like to say that The Last Jedi was a total failure even though it very literally wasn't. If reality proves them wrong, they'll probably just ignore it and keep repeating themselves on the hope that, one day, they'll be the only ones controlling the narrative.
The haters have already moved from the opening weekend by predicting that the second week will show a huge drop-off....which it most likely will, Marvel movies nearly always have a drop off around 60% in the second week (Got G is one of the few exceptions because it was a little bit more of a sleeper hit). Not because of the quality, but because most people who are interested make sure to turn up in the first week.
Thus said, I have the feeling that the drop up won't be that steep. For one, not every will manage to go at the first weekend. There are quite a few people who couldn't for one reason or another, some who waited for the reviews and I bet that some simply waited because the tickets were sold out. And I have also seen comments of people who want to see it a second time. Plus, there isn't really nothing opening next weekend which is in any way dangerous for Captain Marvel.

I think there is a non-crazy argument to say that TLJ's problems negatively impacted Solo's box office because it harmed the overall interest in the franchise, even if the movie itself was a success by most technical measures.
However in order for that to apply here, the people who actually saw Captain Marvel would have to severely dislike it. Which is simply not happening.
EDIT—-
Got a look at the worldwide numbers on box office mojo
, and it's actually tracking for a colossal $455 million opening weekend.
I didn't think it was possible, but I'm starting to wonder if there's a chance it will join the billion dollar club.

The entire AAA gaming industry is unbelievably corrupt. Singling out journalists as "THE PROBLEM" and not talking about the billion-dollar corporations that made the system this way is just putting the blame in the wrong place.
It's the equivalent of calling FOX News evidentiary that journalism as a field is hopelessly corrupt, rather than that a billion-dollar propaganda industry is perpetuating a corrupt journalist network.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Really, their narrative around Captain Marvel has already collapsed. It's on track to make over 400 million on opening day, and has overall positive reviews from film critics. It's a success, plain and simple. All that moaning, review bombing, etc did nothing but make them look stupid.
The "64 on metacritic" is kind of a disingenuous attack given how metacritic works. Here's a list of MCU films that have lower or equal metacritic scores in comparison:
- The First Avenger (54)
- Thor (57)
- Iron Man 2(57) and 3 (62)
- The Incredible Hulk (61)
- Thor the Dark World (54)
- Ant Man (64)
In total fairness, it's not as big a list as I suspected, and most of those films are some of the worst entries in the MCU, so it's not a high bar to clear. But it's worth noting that a number of MCU films have only slightly higher aggregate scores too, like Infinity War (68), Avengers 1 (69), Age of Ultron (66), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (67), and Ant Man and the Wasp (70).
At worst, you might be able to make the argument that it's among the weaker MCU films, but that in no way implies it's bad, or a dismal failure. Films don't need to be Black Panther or Winter Soldier to have value. It's also a naked double standard to expect so much more from minority led films, while meh films starring white men just get a shrug.

Captain Marvel is, at worst, an average Marvel movie (I've seen the movie btw; it's a fun movie but not as groundbreaking as Wonder Woman). It's not divisive as some people may try to make it out to be, so I doubt there will be a sudden drop off at the box office.
Edited by Shadao on Mar 10th 2019 at 10:38:18 AM
Well, with being "Groundbreaking", Wonder Woman has already broken that ground.
I'd say the movie (Captain Marvel) is pretty underwhelming compared to some recent Marvel movies, but that isn't saying much. It's a good-but-not-great movie.

God do I hate the term "Anti-SJW". SJW is a acronym those creatures invented in the first place.
Although defining yourself with a term that's specifically standing against a phantasmal self-inflicted threat that doesn't really exist is a bit on the nose.
Anyways. I will say this while wearing my Captain Marvel T-shirt, reading my Captain Marvel trades, clutching my Captain Marvel action figure and lamenting the fact that I can't play as Captain Marvel in Marvel Heroes anymore so I might not be the most unbiased source but I really liked the movie.
You are not alone.
