Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Why would you not be interested if it's set in the past? Not that I have any problem with that, just curious.
If a film explores set in the past works out an angle that's been a mystery in the present, that is good (provided the explanation/execution is too), if it's exploring something we already know most of the backstory to, then yeah it feels kind of repetitious.
I had an issue with the former in the movie (explanation/execution of a mystery) though not with the latter.

More or less the same reason why I dislike prequels featuring characters I already know: There is no suspense because I already know how it will end.
And with Natasha specifically, I actually don't think that the character pre-The Winter Soldier is that interesting. It's not like I dislike the version of the spy with a dark past, but what actually makes the character for me is when she destroys all the layers of disguise she has built around herself in The Winter Soldier. I want to know more about that character.
Plus, part of the appeal of Black Widow is exactly that we don't know everything about her. I naturally have an idea or two, but that is the next problem with a prequel: The character has been along for so long, we all have some sort of head-canon about her. I really don't want mine to be destroyed.
And finally, if they make a Black Widow movie, I want it to matter. I want it to be a integral part of the MCU, not some filler to answer questions I really don't want an answer to in the first place.

Aaaaand with just these two lines, you've summarize exactly the problems I tend to have with prequels myself. Couldn't agree more on these points.
I found Captain Marvel to be one of the better origin movies and in the better half of Phase 3 films. It’s certainly better than Doctor Strange and Ant Man and the Wasp, both of which were pretty forgettable. But I thought it slightly edged out Black Panther, which to be suffered due to poor emotional development around the characters of Zuri and W’kabi, as well as a poor decision being made around Zuri and T’chanka.
Black Panther does have the setting of Wakanda, but it doesn’t really explore or touch on day to day life there, which was a shame.
Better than Black Panther? I have the feeling that those are fighting words….
But let's look at Phase 3...so we got Got G vol 2, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Ant-man and the Wasp, Thor Ragnarok, Civil War, Captain Marvel and Infinity War...
What do we think, better or worse than Phase 1 and 2?
I love the first Iron Man and Captain America and like the first Thor quite a lot. Plus, of course, The Avengers, which I can rewatch endlessly. The only dud is Incredible Hulk. Meanwhile, Phase 3 all have films I liked, but the only one I really loved was Thor: Ragnarok (which has the "rewatch endlessly" thing to it) and possibly Captain Marvel (I'm going to see it again to see if it holds up).
Phase 3 is easily the best so far and easily better than the first two put together, as least in terms of the movies. Only one real stinker, and the rest are all at LEAST rock solid. I firmly believe that the MCU is still on the best streak of quality it's ever had.
Sadly on the TV side we got Iron Fist season 1, Defenders, Inhumans and Jessica Jones season 2 which uh, weren't ideal.

Self-serious autistic trans gal who loves rock/metal and animation with all her heart. (she/her)Not that I'm not willing to take your word for it, and I'm sure there better stuff to do in Germany on a Saturday at 19:30, but a few details wouldn't go amiss.

They gave Nuke a kind of heroic send-off which REALLY bothered me, had a scene set in the past in which Jessica convinced Trish to go back to her mother for help with her drug addiction (which kind of contradicted season 1 but also REALLY bothered me because I don't think that "go back to your abusive parent" is a solution in ANY situation, turned Jessica into an actual murderer and then ended the series with Trish doing something which wrecked their sisterly relationship forever.
Basically while season 1 was all about shining a stark light on abuse and toxic relationships, season 2 suddenly spend most of its time EXCUSING them.
On a different Note: The Captain Marvel weekend estimates for Saturday are in. Unless there is a really sudden drop on Sunday, the around 150 million estimate turned out to be the correct one.

I found JJ S2 to be very unfocused and meandering, with a much less interesting pair of villains than Kilgrave.
Compiling general consensus from others who watched the season, Jessica Jones and Trish both wind up becoming much more assholish than they were in the first season, to the point that a lot of people stopped rooting for the former and started considering the latter an actual villain. It also pulls the same "the gang splits up" deal that all the shows' second seasons did, but with such a gigantic wedge driven between them all that there's really no believable way for them to come back together.
I still enjoyed watching it, but I also enjoyed Iron Fist S1 and Defenders so I'm clearly pretty easy to please.

Twice!!!!
Nope, I liked if from the get go. I am weird in this regard. Not that I would ever claim it being without a lot of very obvious flaws. But there is enough stuff in it I enjoy. Especially the weird stuff. Still sad that Karaoke guy didn't turn up again in season 2.

Well, I think it had one of the best climaxes in the entire Phase 3, up there with Ragnarok and Infinity War.
My problem is that the movie as a whole is less than the sum of its parts: there's a ton of cool scenes and dialogues and set pieces, put is all put together rather awkwardly, like someone build a 2000-pieces LEGO building without bothering to follow the instructions.
