Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Imagine Conspiracy Brother from Undercover Brother.
Larson: Hello. :)
Haters: Let me tell you something about the word "Hello". It's just a cover for her true meaning, which - if you run the word through the right internet translators - it will reveal itself to be advocacy for male babies should be sterilized at birth.
Captain Marvel is a rather awful victim of the Culture Wars BS. Basically, the Anti-PC Crybabies will declare it the worst thing ever for stupid reasons, and in backlash its defenders will probably lionize the movie as the next sliced bread. The movie, in actuality, is merely good but not great.
Leviticus 19:34Separeting art from artist depends a lot from how many people worked on any given product, the particular "sins" of the artist and what position he took in the creation process.
For instance, I'm only reading The Ender Games through pirating, because the writer is more or less the sole creator of a book.
I'm less willing to do that with, say, a movie or video game, as plenty of people work on that and I find it unfair to throw all of their work away because of the actions of one jerk.
Unless, of course, the particular problem is workplace harassment and abuse, in which case I draw the line. Hence why I'm never watching Sausage Party.

That's essentially what happened with the Ghostbusters reboot. It wasn't actually all that great, but defenders treated it as if it was revolutionary and dismissed a lot of criticism as motivated by (internalized) misogyny as opposed to the fact that the movie simply was not interesting enough to deserve such a strong reaction in any direction.

Maybe he's a closeted homossexual and the homoerotic imagery in the book is his subconscious repressed desires leaking in his writing?
Also, from what little I know about Ender's Game, the story works quite well as a allegory about a gay teenager in a conservative family.
So, points for the Irony, if nothing else.

That last bit is just another of multiple reasons why I'm never playing League of Legends. Another big reason is that I just never gave a shit in the first place.

x2 I haven't bought a single AAA game in years, and I don't regret it.
Hell, if it weren't for the fact the reinburse period ended ages ago, I'd given back my Steam copy of The Wolf Among Us. Much as I love that game, the sheer mess that was Tell Tale Games doesn't let my conscience stay clear with the support I've given them over the years.

The idea that misogyny, racism, and other forms of bigotry have been snuffed out is a myth. Never forget that.
There is a culture war raging in the United States between people who want to preserve the dominance of majority demographics and those who want to empower disenfranchised minority groups, and the strongest tactic the former has is to try and convince poeple that the conflict isn't real.
That way, we're all surprised when these things happen, because they undermine the carefully falsified worldview that we live in an egalitarian society and that any proclamation of bigotry is, itself, a bigoted attack against heterosexual white men.
We all want to believe that the fight for equal rights was victoriously ended before we were born and that there's nothing left to do. But that is a piece of propaganda meant to keep people complacent while slowly pushing minorities back into "their place". Never buy into the lie.

This makes me glad I've been making a lot of female characters.
Does this character sound cool, a woman whose a mother from Thailand who uses Muay Thai to tear demons apart with her bare hands?

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."She is an avenger.
Once upon a time in Ancient China, a demon prince whose family had just conquered China wanders into Thailand to find love because he is an insecure bastard looking for validation. He stumbles onto a wedding & ends up causing a massacre whilst making off with the bride & her sister.
It was then one of the survivors, the brides mother a trained martial artist herself declared vengeance for the atrocity done to her family & rescue of her children. She then went to the mountains to train, essentially pulling a Netero from Hunter x Hunter where she would practice thousands of moves each day & thousands of prayers after every move.
It was then after years of training her mind had cooled, her rage tempered into a fine steel, her hands & feet capable of moving at supersonic speeds & rending landscapes as if they were butter.
And so she waged war against the demon family with nothing but what God gave her & a burning abhorrence of all things evil.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."

In this case it actually improves the film for me to know Brie is playing Captain Marvel. She's a great person, from the looks of it.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."
