Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Imma bookmark this post so I can finish the speech whenever the MCU has its first flop.
Tropers/Ultimatum first we will have to get multiple bad/controversial movies in row that will be in the end still profitable, before audience loose faith in brand and cause movie flop. As long as they MCU can at least maintain fifty-fifty hit and miss ratio they should be fine.

The Incredible Hulk is the only MCU movie out so far that I haven't seen, note and by most reactions to it, I'm kinda hesitant to try it.
Out of the rest of the movies, Iron Man 2 is the only one I didn't find myself enjoying at any point from start to finish. Even Thor 2 has a few nice moments buried what I found to be a very bland movie altogether.
Only Iron Man 3 for me.
Even the other movies people seem to dislike (TIH, Iron Man 2, Thor the Dark World, and AOU) don't gain my ire as quickly as IM 3 did.
One Strip! One Strip! The Incredible Hulk was the only MCU film I didn't see in theaters, but it's not terrible. It's just kind of generic. Although it does have some funny scenes — like Bruce and Betty trying to get a cap in New York and Betty furiously yelling at the cabdriver, causing Bruce to ask if she needs some calming exercises.
Thor: The Dark World is also one I haven't rewatched because it was very middling. Age of Ultron, however, is awesome and I love it, although I still contend that it needs more breathing room — Joss was so intent on cutting things, he cut too much of the connective tissue and didn't let the character moments breath. But then again, there was so much fighting between Joss and Marvel on that one (they hated the farm scenes and wanted them taken out, Joss hated the Thor-lake scene and wanted it taken out, etc), it's a wonder that it's as good as it is.
I also like Age of Ultron for the most part. It falls apart in the third act, or perhaps a bit towards the end of the second (with all the rushed exposition during and after Vision's birth), but I appreciate just how thematically rich the movie was.
The action sequences were needlessly long, though, especially the final one in Sokovia. In terms of pacing, I think Avengers 1 was the technically better movie, though I do like AOU more.
I thought that Iron Man 3 and Thor Ragnarok are the only downright awful MCU films, and I'm very aware that I am in the minority with the case of the latter. Even the weaker films are still passable and entertaining in their own righ, but in the case of Iron Man 3, and Ragnarok; I thought they had extremely poor scripts.
Age of Ultron is one of the weaker films, and I contribute that to its extremely poor editing. Most of the scenes, taken individually, are fine, some are even great. The movie that they form together was a huge mess, and no doubt it was because the original cut was far longer. I actually felt Age of Ultron's theatrical cut was far worse than Dawn of Justice's, and it always bothered me that the former got a pass for it.
Yeah shit sucks. The script never gives the narrative any room to breathe, and it never properly establishes any of the characters except for maybe Blonski and General Ross, the former being Tim Roth doing his best with the weak material he was given and the latter a gigantic asshole. So it becomes impossible to care about anything that happens. Even the fight scenes are pretty meh.
I've only ever seen TIH twice, once in theaters when it was out and then again not that long ago. The first time it left absolutely no impression on me whatsoever. The second time just made the film even worse.

Didn't the pilot to Inhumans see a limited release in IMAX theaters? Because if so, that's the worse MCU product to see a theatrical release, no contest.
I wouldn't really count that, since it was never meant to be a movie, only the pilot to a TV show. But yes, that is probably the worst thing that has ever been made in the MCU.
Sorry, no, it was the later plotline where Karnak bumps his head, loses his powers, gets involved with some pot smugglers, and has sex with the female pot smuggler. That was the worst thing that has ever been made in the MCU.
(If you are asking if I'm making any of that up: no, no I am not. That seriously happened in the show about the Inhumans. It had nothing to do with the main plot at all or any of the characters. Just...pot smugglers.)
I was about to say while I consider Dark World and IM 3 subpar, I can’t think of anything from the MCU that would be outright BAD.
Then I read that line and changed my mind. Feige must be so happy Marvel gets the X-Men back after Dark Phoenix.
To be fair, it was a fun show to snark at. It hit that sweet spot of So Bad, It's Good several times — like Medusa's hair being shaved by an electric razor or, for some reason, everyone somehow being in Hawaii, when they started on the moon (tax breaks, man, tax breaks) or Gorgon not even pretending to have goat's hooves (he wears boots). Also, Maximus did chew a ton of scenery.
But man, I feel so bad for all the actors. They thought they were going to be a part of this big, epic show about this secret kingdom a la Asgard...and they got a tiny budget, a short schedule, and a bad showrunner.
