Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I don't know, but the poster art of Hulk wearing some kind of uniform is very intriguing to me. I mean, I assume we will get Hulk back in Endgame; there's far too much setup for it to be quietly dropped. Banner's arc is undoubtedly going to involve reconciling with his big, green pal, and if that turns into some kind of synthesis a la Professor Hulk, I'm going to be very excited.
Oh, gods. "La, la, la, I can't hear anybody saying anything for the next five days."
A part of me wonders how many of those reviewers are being subtly influenced by the fear of being set upon by all the trolls...

Let's be honest, if the reviews were all "THIS IS THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER MADE", they'd just claim that critics are only praising the movie because it stars a female lead. I expect some of them will go that route just because the reviews aren't universally terrible.
Nevermind that plenty of female-led movies in the past have been trashed by the critics.
The trolls are going to interpret any developments as being negative. Even if it somehow blasts past expectations and opens to over 200 million in the NA box office alone, they will somehow find a reason to think it means the sky is falling.
I have skimmed through the blurbs of the reviews and yes, I think, the whole controversy had an impact...but not the way you would expect. A common theme of the more negative ones is "it is not as feminist as the marketing tooted" and I am all "when has the marketing ever promised anything but a Marvel movie with a females lead?"
Strangely, what I have seen makes me even more excited, because what I read makes it sound like exactly the kind of movie I love to see. It is allegorical (not sure about what, but great!!!), instead of a love story it focusses on a female to female friendship (YES!!!!) and Brie Larson is praised across the board except from one idiot who says "that you can expect of an actress to give her best work in a superhero movie" (what an a...).
Plus, the reviewers who usually praise the Marvel movies I consider okay and call the ones okay which I love the most are saying the movie is okay, so I will most likely adore it.

I know, which is why I put more stock into those who say that Captain Marvel is pretty much going its own thing, whatever that thing exactly is.
So while nobody says that it is the best MCU movie (which, frankly, I didn't expect) some say it is up there with the best of them.

Having seen Battle Angel Alita, I think Alita is actually a very good movie, especially if you like weird sci-fi, action and the original manga+OVA.
Everything I've seen indicates Captain Marvel will be a Super Hero movie, so I'm not seeing any connection between the two films outside of the vague connection of both having a female lead.
And I don't see whats stopping us from having two blockbuster films with a female lead. If anything it'll lead to film makers understanding female leads are not a turn off for moviegoers.

It would most likely make way more sense to compare Captain Marvel with something like Green Lantern and, well, that wouldn't really be competition at all.
But I guess we won't be able to avoid people comparing Captain Marvel with Wonder Woman. Nor will we be able to avoid people nitpicking Captain Marvel, since they have already decided that the movie will be terrible.
Man I don't even want to look at the Rotten Tomatoes audience score once it's turned on post-release.

Yeah, i'm actually very excited for Shazam cuz it looks like fun, and it'd suck if pissy fanboys manage to ruin it for me. :/
In any case, I'm seeing Captain Marvel this Saturday and I am stoked. Also, when is the review embargo lifted again?
When we're done, there won't be anything left.
