Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I suppose, but, who exercises in weather where you even need gloves? Ok, so the weight room is cold, unlikely in most gyms but still possible. Are you not building up enough of a sweat that the cold is irrelevant?
Wearing them in a cold car - that I get. Wearing them when you're working out? It's not something I would think to do. Do the gloves improve the workout? Is it less stress on the palms or something? If anything I'd think the firmness/thickness of the fabric would loosen one's grip.
I swear if not for some claiming that the warmth provided is an ok trade-off, I'd do everything in my power to eliminate fingerless gloves from the face of this earth and just make everyone wear mittens. Mittens are nice.
And the thing about finger-less gloves is that it pays lipservice to other concepts. Next thing you know we'll have toe-less so...
-googles-
Oh goddamit.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!The palm portion of fingerless gloves is nice for people who have soft or sensitive skin. In terms of working out, they allow you to use the grip of your fingers to hold the weights or chin-up bar without getting calluses on your palms.
I never really considered how useful they'd be in superhero fights, but I guess they could kind of serve the same purpose there. If someone tries to punch you and you catch their fist, fingerless gloves would give your fingers their full grip and dexterity, while providing the palm with a bit of extra padding.
Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson take turns saying each other's iconic lines.
(And if you are wondering "I don't remember if Brie Larson has had any iconic lines?" yes, she points that out herself.)

speaking of twitter, I think I figured where the "Captain Marvel destroyed comics" nonsense comes from. Apparently because of some meeting which happens every year someone at twitter started the rumour that Marvel Comics will get shut down, which those "Captain Marvel is the worst" idiots turned into another opportunity to blame Captain Marvel (I suspect because of Civil War II).
Btw, the newest "story" is that Marvel cuts down the running time of the movie from three hours and cut out as much as Captain Marvel as possible in the process….
That's not how cutting a movie for time works….
This video is on race rather than sex and gender, and primarily covers the DCAU, but the message is effectively the same. Diverse characters is about representation and reflecting reality, not just letting enforced homogeneity continue just because.

On the "talking BS about Captain Marvel" front (because frankly, this is getting hilarious: Supposedly Australia forces people to watch Captain Marvel.
In reality Captain Marvel just happens to be the one big movie which will be around next week in Australia (especially since they got some movies like HTTYD 3 earlier than the US), so most theatres simple scheduled what most people will want to watch. and frankly, if you don't want to watch it, just don't go to the cinema.
Btw, Captain Marvel has an excellent slot. There will be no other new releases this weekend, and nothing notable in the following week.

Sexism, mainly. Even though their efforts are for naught and it's a foregone conclusion that it's going to make some mad dosh because it's a superhero movie, let alone an MCU movie.

Self-serious autistic trans gal who loves rock/metal and animation with all her heart. (she/her)While we can pretty confidant in MCU movies doing well, don't be so blasé about superhero movies in general or even Marvel based properties automatically making bank. Remember Fant4stic?

Everyone knew Fant4stic was going to bomb. Obviously people hoped they'd be wrong, but the Fantastic 4 movies have a history of being mediocre at best, and the trailers didn't inspire much confidence.

Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.I do remember a bunch of racists were getting on Fan4stic's case because Johnny was black, but I believe that kind of got overshadowed by people not being onboard with the Darker and Edgier direction, the Ashcan Copy nature of the film, and the general production problems that were getting leaked out. Once the film was released, people focused on the actual issues of the film and the racists probably didn't feel they needed to take the film down a peg any more then they did.
Fant4stic had an extremely troubling production, everyone knew that the only reason the movie was made at all was because Fox wanted to hold onto the rights, the trailers looked awful, they tried to hide the movie as long as possible and then Wo M was just bad, and that included the Wo M from the director, who practically disowned the movie at the day of release...EVERYTHING was stacked against it.
And yes, Superhero movies can fail, but Marvel studios usually doesn't, hence they get a certain measure of trust. And rumours are the Captain Marvel isn't just good, people who have seen it expect that the excitement over it will even grow once Wo M makes the round.
Anyway, especially female lead but in general "culturally important" movies like Black Panther have been attacked by right-wing media channels at least since Mad Max Fury Road. At least, that was the first time I noticed. Apparently you can get a lot of clicks (and therefore a lot of money) if you attack a so called "woke" property and create a one-sided controversy. Usually it just isn't as noticeable because, well, those people just blend into the usual fandom rivalries or use honest fandom gripes with a property as fig leaf.

Yeah, my car is so old, it has no heating...I use fingerless gloves in the winter because I don't want to lose the grip, but I can just take away the finger tips steering wheel when I don't actively use it. I wouldn't feel comfortable to drive with actual gloves, too slippery.
