Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Don't forget that Agents of SHIELD also has some of the best fight scenes:

  • May vs May in "Face My Enemy."
  • Skye vs a room full of mooks in one shot in "The Dirty Half Dozen" (which rivals Daredevil's one-shot hallway scene).
  • Daisy vs Hive in "Ascension."
  • Daisy vs the LMDs in "Self Control."

In fact, that last one is so awesome, you have to see it for yourself if you haven't:

Daredevil also has some amazingly inventive fight scenes:

  • The one-shot hallway fight scene from "Cut Man," of course.
  • Frank Castle's fight inside the prison in "Seven Minutes in Heaven."
  • And the epic ten-minute prison fight scene in "Blindsided." I could only find about half of the fight on YouTube, but man, is it still worth it:

I was freaking the fuck out when I first saw that prison fight scene. It took me a couple minutes to realize it was all one take, but after that, almost the whole scene was drowned out by my geeking out and going "IT'S STILL GOING" and "HOLY CRAP, THEY MUST HAVE HAD TO DO SO MANY TAKES TO GET THIS PERFECT IN ONE" and "HOW IS IT STILL GOING, OH MY GOD".

I like that it's not just a fight scene, it has a mid-battle cutscene in it. tongue

Let’s see off the top of my head.

Iron Man’s first battle against terrorists & that dogfight.

Thor’s massacre of the Frost Giants.

Everything fight Cap fought in the Winter Solider.

Civil Wars airport battle & final battle.

Ant-Man vs Yellowjacket.

All the Titan Battle, Thanos vs Hulk, & Ebony Maw’s fights.

Thor vs Hulk & Thor going all “Ahahahahahahhhhhhhhhhhhh”.

Daredevil’s first hallway battle.

"IT'S STILL GOING" and "HOLY CRAP, THEY MUST HAVE HAD TO DO SO MANY TAKES TO GET THIS PERFECT IN ONE" and "HOW IS IT STILL GOING, OH MY GOD".
The second time I watched it, I was trying to count how many times you couldn't see Charlie Cox's face, so it was actually the stuntman, but they did it so seamlessly it was hard. And Matt's face is uncovered, unlike the first hallway fight scene, so there was no way to just have the stuntman do the entire thing.

None of the other Marvel Netflix shows come close in regard to fight scenes — although, ironically, Iron Fist Season 2 has some good ones, despite the fact that Season 1's fights sucked.

Iron Fist S2 actually had Black Panther's choreographer, which is why it's such a step up.

The Iron Man vs Thor fight in Avengers was decent. Thor vs Hulk on the SHIELD carrier too though too brief to ever make any best of lists.

Thor vs Hulk in Ragnarok, because it is a classic comics bout that the first Avengers really didn't do justice. The prison hallway fight in Daredevil, if only because of how brutal it is. Doctor Strange vs Thanos in IW, for being the most over-the-top Wizard Duel thus far shown.

And my very favorite is Bucky and Steve vs Iron Man in CW, for having everything I want in a fight: great coreography, creative tactics, emotional stakes, change in environment and it ends with all combatants having their shit throughly beaten.

And one honorable mention is the first fight between Ghost Rider and Daisy. It's not a good fight, but the acene when he burns his face off and the flaming skull shows up is truly memorable.

That falls more into impressive special effects...Ao S has quite a few of them. Ie when the Nitro-Expy reforms.

so...apparently Captain Marvel is now also responsible for the destruction of the comics? Not sure where this new "trend" in hate videos is coming from (since I refuse to click on them), but can those people get more ridiculous?

[up][up]It's not just the special effects, the build up is also done really well.

[up]Fairness where it is due, Marvel Comics went through a bit of a Dork Age after Secret Wars was done.

That said, it's hardly Carol's fault (more Bendis') abd they been on a upswing in quality recently by all accounts, so it's ridiculous nonetheless.

for me the fight between cap and bucky in the highway because it let both the villian and the heroe shine, that moment with the knife is awsome: you can feel bucky is one step to cut down cap and he is doing is best to not let that happen.

In raw powah is clearly thannos vs strange, you can feel strange is unleashing all the heavy shit he learn between movie.

And I didnt like hive vs quake, maybe because hive near inmortality hax make things less intersting, I would have love if he beat her fair and square but oh well, that is why I prefer tasia vs daisy.

A honorable mention is antman vs.....tha guy with the wasp suit, damn that fight was legit funny for me.

The worst fight would be....ultron vs cap, boy that was boring.

So here's a weird question. Why is the MCU obsessed with fingerless gloves?

Steve wears them. Sam wears them. Natasha wears them. Bucky wears one on his goddamn robot hand. I'm pretty sure Wanda wears them. Carol's going to wear them. I'm pretty sure Gamora wears them. Tony has a fucking Iron Man fingerless glove in Civil War. The fuck?

My various fanfics.

It looks good?

Plus most of the MCU guys don't have secret identities so no need to worry about finger prints.

Fingerless gloves are very practical. They keep your hands warm, but they don't hinder your ability to grip and feel things.

True, but that also means your finger tips get cold.

As someone who's hands get cold very easily (to the point where I ironically find it better not to wear gloves oddly enough as my hands tend to get colder when I'm wearing them), I've always found my fingertips getting cold to be an issue.

I've never really understood the function of fingerless gloves either.

If you're in a cold enough area where you need to wear gloves more than likely letting your fingertips get cold is still a problem. Just find gloves that have like, I don't know, more grip to them? Maybe little studs on the fingertips?

You wouldn't wear them while you were doing a job outside in the cold - if you needed to lift things in weather that's 20 to 30 below, say firewood or crates, you'd run the risk of splinters/injury from your skin being exposed at all, and you'd still be dealing with the cold to your extremities.

Superheroes can get away with this of course. Rogue it makes sense for given how her powers work. But fingerless gloves feel like more like a fashion statement than practical outsidewear.

I wonder if Pierce is going to get a cameo or a mention in Captain Marvel. This is happening, like, right after Howard Stark’s death, right? So Pierce should be on the rise as HYDRA consolidates his power, and since he’s Fury’s mentor and such I’d be surprised if Fury doesn’t mention him getting a promotion or something for some Dramatic Irony.

Likewise, I wonder if Xandar is going to come up. They’re still at war with the Kree at this point, after all.

Fingerless glove are generally used when one is working out, lifting weights, that kind of thing.

You don't want anything slipping when you are lifting weights.
