Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

People were used to it. Not because they liked it or even thought it was okay, but because there was a sense that every movie was like that, so you had to learn to just ignore it. And over time, we reached the point where there were enough movies without gratuitous sexism that avoiding the sexist movies was actually an option.

Venkman was a scientist (a huckster scientist, but a scientist all the same). Sedatives are a science thing. Therefore, I assume all scientists carry that stuff around with them.
Venkman wasn't carrying a roofie. He specifically said it was thorazine, a significantly more powerful sedative that would likely not be practical for date rapists because it risks actually killing people.
As for why he had thorazine, I'm pretty sure the writers' thought process was: 1) In this scene, we need to tranquilize Zuul. 2) Venkman is a scientist, so he has access to chemicals. The question of why he would have enough sedative to fill a can of coke on his way to a date likely never crossed their minds. It's a plot hole.
I get it - the 80s were a time when a lot of very not cool stuff showed up in popular media without anyone questioning it. However, suggesting that a character intended to rape another character just because that fits your worldview of what 80s media is like is actually messed up.
Don't joke about rape.
Skipped the last couple pages, pretty much since the Nitro discussion.
Sadly, there are people who state that because racism was more acceptable in the past, it's no big deal.
I'm pretty sure the Magic Eyes aren't real magic eyes, and there's a QR code hidden in there, or something that can only be seen with those red or blue filtered "3D" glasses.
They're probably all Skrulls behind them, anyway.

Depends on how far back into the past you go: there's plenty of people who thought the Confederates were monsters even back in the 19th century, so they have no excuse for being a bunch of slavers.
Something you can't say of your average peasant back in, say, 1000 A.D.
Me, I rather just be thankful to God that I was born into the information age, where ignorance is no excuse and I can inform myself as much as I need of any issues pretty much whenever.
Venkman is a semi-professional con man. His default approach to situations is to manipulate and charm his way through them. This includes relationships, and when people in RL do that, we do not have complimentary things to say about them. It is unclear whether he would actually drug someone in order to have sex with them; I would have to say no because that would have taken him way beyond the limits of audience sympathy even in the eighties. It's creepy, but not in a "OMG this guy needs to be locked up" kind of way.
There is never the slightest indication that he intends to rape Dana; indeed, the film flirts with the Double Standard: Rape, Female on Male trope.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Well anyway, seeing as how this thread is about The MCU, lets talk about some of our favorite fight scenes in the Marvel Movies.
I'll get the ball rolling with two of mine.
Cap VS Bucky: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnORc5qeh3w
Spider-Man VS Doctor Octopus on the train: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z00fTwhmYX0
Aaaannnd Bub VS Lady Deathstrike: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4txOcQ4Ah3o
Cap vs Bucky in Winter Soldier (on the helicarrier) along with the airport fight and the Cap-Iron Man fight in Civil War, are probably the best fight scenes in the MCU.
The Cap-Bucky and Cap-Iron Man ones were particularly good in having emotional power that moved them beyond just being action scenes. The airport one is lighter, but it’s got great combinations of powers interacting with each other and Spidey’s commentary makes it lively.

Iron Man vs. Thanos. Hands down my favorite so far.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I really like Punisher vs. Billy Russo from Punisher S1E13. So brutal.
Haven't actually finished S2 yet.
In the movies, they really nailed it with the battle on Titan (especially Doctor Strange and Iron Man's respective duels with Thanos), but I still have a soft spot for the big setpiece Battle of New York.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! The elevatator fight in WS.
Both Steve versus Bucky fights.
The airport fight in Civil War.
The final fight in Civil War.
The battle of New York.
The battle with Ego in GOTG 2.
The IMMIGRANT SONG FIGHT IN THOR RAGNAROK.
The “come on, Peter” post-fight aftermath in Homecoming.
The casino fight in Black Panther.

All of the Titan Fight, the elevator fight in WS, the airport fight in CW, the final fight in CW, and the helicarrier fight in WS.
And there'll always be a special place in my heart for Cap just wrecking everyone on the boat in Winter Soldier.
My various fanfics.

Then it became popular in spite of that.
