Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up]Oh there is such a thing as bad publicity. There's Deep Silver's "anime fan on Prom Night" ad for Mighty No. 9, Daikatana's "John Romero is going to make you his <gendered expletive>" ad, THQ Nordic's recent ill-advised decision to host an AMA on 8chan of all places...

Disgusted, but not surprised

The ghostbusters remake bombed for the same reasons most remakes usually bomb.

It might’ve flopped anyway on film quality alone if there was no anti-feminist backlash, but that the upcoming re-reboot is stating how much it wants to appeal to “the original fans” says that the backlash was considered to have an effect.

Personally, I don't really bother too much about the "politics" behind Captain Marvel but I am more bothered by the fact it apparently was controversial enough for Captain Marvel's YMMV page to removed when every other movie of MCU has YMMV page even before release (Endgame, Spider-Man Far From Home).

Captain Marvel is no Ghostbusters 2016. There's nothing about the trailers that should make people worry about the quality of the film. It looks fun, exciting, action-packed and at worst a typical run of the mill Marvel movie (though that doesn't mean I don't want to be blown away with excitement; I most certainly do).

That's because they have nothing to hide behind this time around. There isn't enough excitement to drown them out, because most people are in a "I trust Marvel, hopefully it will blow me away but if it doesn't, it is okay too" mood, nor is there enough fandom controversy to piggy back on like it was the case with Ghostbusters.

Do take a moment to consider, of course, that Ghostbusters (2016) is almost painfully mediocre. If you put the concept, characters and story as-is into anything else, it would've been forgotten about entirely.

So yeah, the publicity helped get the conversation going, to puts things nicely, but the movie just couldn't live up to it.

It's the same thing with Daikatana and Mighty No. 9: the former is bad on every conceivable level and the latter is just blah. Had either of those been good, the whole deal would've been forgotten.

Besides, neither game needed publicity: John Romero was the hottest name in gaming at the time thanks to Doom, and MN 9 was hyped up as the Spiritual Successor of the Mega Man franchise.

Its pretty much fact that controversy never really ruins a product.

Its the products own quality. As long as its good people won't give a shit.

Unlike those Egyptian-based movies starring white people.

A good movie about the Egyptian gods wouldn't star white people as said gods.

It sucks. Go watch Thor again.

Take away the whole "all female" controversy and the end result is a tired reboot of a property which might not be that popular at this point and which fans of the franchise resented for being a reboot instead of a continuation.

Or, to put it differently, if the Psycho remake had been about serial killer Norma Bates, the problem would have STILL been that it was a shot by shot remake of a movie experience you just can't recapture.

Is there any mythology in the Marvel Comics other than pseudo-Judeo Christian, Norse and Greek? There's so many crazy stuff I feel it is a waste no writer ever did anything with others outside the "safe space", for lack of a better term.

Y’know, it’s funny, at the time, tumblr reactions were half “meh” and half “this is stupid but I LOVE IT.”

I think without the backlash it would’ve been a middling movie that most people forgot about, but had a decent group of cult fans. Also, I rewatched some original Ghostbusters clips recently and dear god, a lot of the comedy has aged VERY badly. I kinda side eye the devotion to OG Ghostbusters now because uhhh it’s really... rapey.

[up][up]There was that time Thor fought Shiva, who objected to him wanting to revive his fallen brothers and sisters. Thor won, but it was later retconned it was a lesser god pinch hitting for Shiva since she was busy.

[up]Still think the film is hilarious, but admittedly my point of nostalgia is the cartoon. The one Melissa Mc Carthy allegedly wanted to use as a template before Feig shut that down.

There is Silverclaw, who is based on some kind of made up South-American mythology. And Black Panther is based on a wild mix of vaguely African gods...most notable Bastet, which is naturally Egyptian.

But as a general rule Marvel steers away from gods people still worship. I mean, how would you feel if Jesus were suddenly some guy with healing ability who can walk over water?

Yeah, I never liked the original Ghostbusters in the first place. The movie lost me within the first five minutes when the main character screws up a psych test because he has a boner and then not even has the decency to NOT shock the other guy the one time he is right. And I am supposed to root for that a-hole? I am supposed to be on the side of the Ghostbusters when they ignore regulations and endanger other people in the process (I guess I am too German for this movie….)

Oh viewers in America too have been pointing out for a while that the villainous EPA guy makes a lot of good points about how unregulated the Ghostbusters are.

Spider-Man: Amazing Grace had a lot about Santería mythology.

God’s vs God’s.

Also legendary heroes, never stops being fun.

I just read a manga that has Thor vs Lu Bu from the 3 Kingdoms.

We are supposed to find Peter Venkman (in the original Ghostbusters) to be endearingly rogueish and root for him to develop a moral compass, but examined from an outside perspective, he is a colossal douchebag who defrauds the university he's employed at, creeps on women, and slags off public officials who are doing their jobs.

The novelization gives us a bit more backstory for him: he grew up as a carny and so has a very dim view of the gullibility of people in general, but still.

Peter isn't the only odd person in the crew. Ray is a nutball conspiracy theorist (Dan Aykroyd didn't have to act much for the role) with no credulity filter. Egon is a misfit who was growing slime molds while his peers were learning to socialize.

All of the Ghostbusters (save Winston, who's just an ordinary dude) are weirdos: that is baked into the premise of the film. They learn to be heroes as their various hobbies and abilities just happen to synergize with the profession of, well, busting ghosts.
