Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The upside is that between the possible most controversial wins they went for only the second most controversial.

The downside: As long as they don't give the MCU the special effects award it deserves at least since Got G, they are still snubbing Marvel.

I'm not going to claim that Black Panther should have won Best Picture or anything like that. The contenders were very strong and I thought any of them could have taken it. The fact that it won awards at all is great.

Regardless of Black Panther winning, Green Book and Bobemian Rhapsody weren’t strong contenders. They shouldn’t have been nominated in the first place.

Yep, for all my reservations regarding Black Panther's nomination, it was a more deserving winner than either of those movies for sure.

I agree. I don’t know if Black Panther was the best of the nominees, but it easily deserved Best Picture more than the movie that won.

It was a stupid function anyway. Audience scores are pretty iffy in the first place, but they are even worse when you throw the "want to see" score into the mix.

Now all they have to do is crack down on people who shitpost after the movie comes out.

Those people will be drowned out by excitement. The main reason they currently can get away with their BS is because there is nobody who would go to bat for a movie they haven't seen yet outside of saying "it is too early to judge". Because that's currently the reasonable position.

The good thing: This time they can't claim that they didn't do what they did after the fact, like they did with Black Panther and Wonder Woman. They went waaaay overboard this time.

It was always a dumbass feature. How the hell can you review or judge a movie that hasn't even been released yet?

Yeah, I mean, either you don't care about a movie, then you won't vote on this, or you are extremely excited for it. Or you senselessly hate on a movie, but that would mean that you are just a troll. So what exactly was this feature suppose to tell anyone?

I’m gonna be really happy when the movie comes out & we can finally be over this nonsense that is supposed to be a “controversy”.

Because of all the people just bitching about Brie Larson & “sjws”. I feel like I’m getting a fucking aneurysm from sheer stupidity.

Well, I'll play devil's advocate, why not.

I think what Brie Larson said was stupid, and it (or more specifically, the predictable outcome of what she she said) significantly dampened my excitement for the movie. I will still see it - besides the fact that I'm a fan of the MCU, I also actively like female heroes - but it annoys me to see tedious identity politics dragged into what should be utterly neutral entertainment. The movie itself probably is neutral, but why cast a shadow over it like this?

Should someone feel inclined to argue that I evidently did not read her full quote, I did. I don't specifically disagree with her, but I have two major beefs: 1) this is a rich celebrity with the resources to personally order a study of the demographics of people who interview her, lecturing others on perceived privilege; 2) there's no need to turn things into a negative, she could have stated the exact same thing as simply "I would like to see more representation" rather than "there's too damn many white dudes", because the result we saw should have been completely predictable. Sometimes how you say things really does matter.

It should be obvious that I'm not a misogynist or racist (I hope), but I'm also an older guy who just wants to watch something with my family without it turning into a discussion between various members about the politics of the people involved. Over the last decade I've dropped at least a thousand on tickets and Blu Rays for MCU films, but I'll also just stop bothering without shedding a tear if it turns into a political platform, regardless of what political views are espoused. Maybe that won't matter to Marvel, if enough people with money care about politics in movies to drown me out, then maybe it's a shrewd business move. But it doesn't keep my interest.

Rotten Tomatoes, and all ratings aggregators, are worthless both before and after a movie comes out. It's only by sheer coincidence that the RT rating ever reflects my own opinion. Still, it makes me laugh to see everyone bashing the hype meter only after it comes out with a result they disapprove of. Reminds me of all the bitching about how stupid the US electoral college is - when the writer's preferred party loses. When they win, democracy has triumphed.

“I don’t need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work about A Wrinkle in Time,” Larson said. “It wasn’t made for him! I want to know what it meant to women of colour, biracial women, to teen women of colour.”

[up][up][up] Unfortunately, you can't keep the politics out of this one. Brie Larson didn't start the uproar over her role, but she decided not to sit passively and take it. This marks her as some kind of "SJW" according to those seedier parts of the Internet.

To some folks, a woman speaking out against sexism is treated as offensive. Fuck those people with the broomsticks they keep up their asses.

[up] Good points. I agree with her. This is not to say that I think that A Wrinkle in Time (2018) is the greatest thing ever, but as a 40 year old white man, it's not targeted at me.

There's also rarely if ever such a thing as "neutral entertainment" either. What people consider neutral often says more about their own politics than the piece of media in question.

Sure you can. Up until that interview, the politics on this was low key enough that it was easily ignored. I don't seek out news on the subject, but this was controversial enough to make mainstream news. That's going too far. Again, not so much what she said, but the obvious reaction to it. I don't like paying to be a part of public controversy.

It's fine if you disagree. But like I said, I won't keep going to the movies if they're going to be about this. Google news provides free political depression, movie tickets are like $25 a pop and I don't want the argument with people I care about because the actors think being an entertainer makes them an important political voice.

The movie has nothing to do with this. You are conflating the public opinion of Brie Larson, the actor, about entertainment journalism, with her role in a film, Captain Marvel. You can do that if you want, but it doesn't follow axiomatically.

That it offends you speaks about you more than it does about her.
