Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

You can't treat any opinion other than your own as gospel, but good reviews, especially good reviews that came in early so good word of mouth can spread, helps the chances of a movie being successful.
That's why people here are excited.
Not me, I don't particularly care about the character and would watch the movie anyway even if the approval rating was in the single digits, but that's something else.
Good to hear early feedback for CM is as positive as it is. I maintain that these movies are on their biggest and best streak of quality right now and it's great to see that continuing with our new glorious Captain.
Self-serious autistic trans gal who loves rock/metal and animation with all her heart. (she/her)Obviously we shouldn't treat the initial impressions as anything other than just that. Initial impressions by individual people based on their own subjective experience of the movie.
But overwhelmingly positive initial impressions (including from some people who were very skeptical of the movie going in from what I've been hearing) is an extremely good sign for the quality of the movie overall.
Since I'm kind of a nerd about period pieces, it'll be interesting to see if we get any instances of Anachronism Stew or Present-Day Past.
The initial impressions being so positive is good news. Hopefully, this will be the MCU's Wonder Woman equivalent in terms of female empowerment, cultural impact, and quality (maybe surpassing it, if it sticks the ending). I would be ecstatic if Captain Marvel made bank on par with Black Panther, just to prove for the second year in a row that diversity is important.
I don't quite expect that, but if the reviews are correct then I appreciate that it's apparently quite strong on its own merits when it comes to the acting, characterization, and unique flavor. That's good because it helps normalize female protagonism for traditionally male-dominated genres, something we're still struggling to do in Hollywood.
@The fandub last turn. Between that and the one with Spider-Man and assorted other heroes vs Kingpin, I'd pay good money for a comic series that was just different superheroes/villains having misadventures and silly conversations while playing poker.
Hell, I'd pay good money for a Poker Night at the Inventory style game where you play against different superheroes, who all have wildly different personalities and playstyles.
The only thing I don't like is how Carol's VA sounded so flirty.
Like, I can't imagine a person that's less flirtatious than Carol Danvers.

I don’t think it would be difficult to introduce Nadia Van Dyne as another daughter of Hank Pym, as her origin basically boils down to “Hank had a fling with a Hungarian woman who was then kidnapped by Red Room agents”. It would be easy to justify in the films as someone he got involved with while he believed Janet was dead. And then Hope could take on the role of mentoring Nadia the way Janet did in the comics.

Amusingly, that would make the Supreme Intelligence even more of a foil to Veranke, and plus an Evil Counterpart to MCU Nova Prime.
Captain Marvel hype video, guest starring the Winter Soldier.
How does this only have 400 views on Youtube but 37,000 views on Twitter

Honestly, I liked the rebooted Ghostbusters better than the original, and found it funnier. I’d give the reboot a 3 or 3.5 out of 5. Watched the original and really didn’t understand the appeal (between it and Groundhog Day, I’ve found that I just really don’t like Bill Murray characters).
I agree that Ghostbusters (2016) a typical reboot - fine, but not great - and the only reason it’s been slammed so heavily is misogyny.
I’m really hoping Captain Marvel does well, because if it doesn’t, idiots will manage to create a narrative of “female led superhero movies don’t sell” despite all the successful action herione franchises.
