Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Gamora and Nebula sure didn't start Got G 2 on good terms, but they talked their problems out and learned to get along and I've always loved their scenes together.
Anyway, yay more Carol action. Also something something Carol smiling.
Self-serious autistic trans gal who loves rock/metal and animation with all her heart. (she/her)I keep seeing static creeping in from around my field of vision that Captain Marvel is going to suck and predicting failure. Fuck. That. Noise.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yeah, but with this one I feel like there's a body of people rooting for it to fail... maybe so they can discredit the idea of female-led superhero movies.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"There is a group of Anti-SJW which are campaigning hard for it to fail. They complain about really EVERYTHING and are currently foaming out of their mouth because there is a rumour that the movie is not just good, but brilliant.
We will know for sure in two months, but I hope the rumours are true, because this would show once and for all how ridiculous those people are.
I think the same group was predicting that Wonder Woman would suck, it's just that people called them out for their sexism less because the DCCU had yet to put out a single good film, so there was every reason to think it would suck.
Of course, Wonder Woman turned out to be awesome, and I'm sure Captain Marvel will too, especially since Marvel has a much better track record.

Yeah, there were people with good faith concerns that have mostly dried up after the some of the more recent marketing. But it's the difference from thinking it might be bad based on how the initial previews struck you, and wanting it to be bad or thinking it could of only be bad from the day it was announced. The former is judging the Captain Marvel as a movie, and the latter is just sexism.
Also, here's a preview clip of the movie.
Nothing super spoilery, just a bit of lead up to the train scene we've already seen in the trailers.

Eh, they'll probably just find more.
Burning the heart-shaped herbs was a crucial moment for Killmonger's character, demonstrating the kind of short-sighted "F*ck you, got mine" logic endemic to authoritarianism. It was a valuable scene because it shows that Killmonger not only cares nothing for tradition but also for legacy; he's not planning for there to ever be another King of Wakanda after him.
Obviously no one lives forever, but like many rulers both good and bad before him, Killmonger isn't thinking of that. He sees the line of succession as only a threat to his rule and not an inevitable thing that has to exist to ensure a clear and unmessy transition of power when time does to the king what it does to all things.
His disdain for the succession also demonstrates his lack of regard for Wakanda as a whole. The nation, to him, is a means to an end. He wants to use their resources to trigger a global revolution. He sees Wakanda as the start of his own imperialist agenda, with the end-goal of creating his own version of the world his people have fought so hard to escape from, but with the demographics flipped to put the whips in black people's hands.
"The world's gonna start over and this time we're gonna be on top."
Dude's basically Magneto.
So, yeah. All in all, burning the heart-shaped herbs is a very important moment for Killmonger that shows us a lot about his character and mindset. It's a good scene to have.
But I never really expected it to last. Again, maybe this is just comics making me cynical about plot points, but I always figured that they'd just find more somehow before succession ever became a concern. Maybe someone else grabbed some. Maybe they notice some growing in some dude's field one day. Maybe Shuri's synthesizing some in her lab or something. Who knows?

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.

Frankly, I am kind of ridiculously excited that we will get to see another friendship between two females...in the movies, we didn't have this since Thor, and there it too less than five minutes for Selwig to butt in.
