Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I do.
Go read Nextwave:
FIN FANG FOOM!
Mommy was a slut-lizard that did the Bad Thing with suggestively-shaped piles of nuclear waste, and nine months later...
FIN FANG FOOM!
Has been burning with the need to mate since 1956!
FIN FANG FOOM!
Has absolutely no genitals whatsoever!
FIN FANG FOOM!
Oh, you cannot imagine how annoyed he is.

And he wasn't even the silliest thing in that comic.

Special Bear. Dirk Anger. Father Blood Drench Robo Crush. Drop Bears. Dirk Anger. Forbush Man. The Gamma-Activated Bull Men From Beyond The Nineteenth Perimeter. Dirk Anger.

And then here's the team itself...

Of course, nothing beats Devil Dinosaur in a smoking jacket in terms of batshit silliness. Except maybe Dirk Anger.

Nextwave is a super hero comic about five people who have just minutes to prevent a town from being eaten by a giant lizard monster. In purple underpants.

Nextwave gets their lovin' from your mama!

This is Nextwave: selling you a huge crazy mutant cop menacing an attractive young woman and calling it Fun.

Nextwave would like to remind the audience that dragging insane, corrupt police officers who change into giant killer robots into an alleyway and shooting them a lot is very bad and not the Marvel way. And also still illegal in most states.

Nextwave: a tale of five pirate superheroes stopping the terrorist cell S.I.L.E.N.T. today masquerading as the Beyond Corporation from product-testing WMDs on American cities and if that actually made sense to you tell mommy or daddy to get you the special pills.

Nextwave knows that science is a trick on white people and that the shamans of the mountains, the jungle, the desert and the steppe have hated Stephen Hawking for five thousand years.

Nextwave: Healing American By Beating People Up.

Nextwave: Dance, Critters.

Nextwave are in your room and touching your stuff.

And as you might have guessed from my earlier post, the MCU could really use a bit of Dirk Anger. He's just such a gleefully fucked up character.

I feel like eventually we’ll get a Nextwave thing.

Marvel gets more ambitious every year after all.

[up][up]He even wears his mama's flowery house dress on occasion.

These quotes sum up Dirk Anger:

"Hot damn! Get me a case of vodka, eight loose women and a stomach pump! Stat! Imma watch TEEVEE!"

"Release the NEO-HYDE GUTSPAWN! Human scum empowered by the cloned chemically-mutated cells found in the corpse of Henry Jekyll himself! They eat girls, Monica! Ha ha ha ha ha! THEY EAT GIRLS!"

" I'm ninety years old. You know how I look so pretty? I take drugs. Special H.A.T.E. drugs. Life extending drugs. H.A.T.E. has the best drugs. Because H.A.T.E. loves me. And I love H.A.T.E. Every day of my horrible drug-extended terrorist-fighting life."

"I have reinvented suicide as a group activity. Go me"

And of course his last words:

"My Name's Dirk Anger and I say ☠☠☠☠ all of you."

It should be noted the Warren Ellis originally wanted to use Nick Fury in Nextwave. The editors presumably nixed that idea after Ellis showed them what he was planning to do with the character.

Ellis: "So here's a sketch of Nick Fury wearing his mother's house dress..."

Editors: "No."

"Release the NEO-HYDE GUTSPAWN! Human scum empowered by the cloned chemically-mutated cells found in the corpse of Henry Jekyll himself! They eat girls, Monica! Ha ha ha ha ha! THEY EAT GIRLS!"
"Put the Atomic Puppies in the torpedo tubes! Yap yap bang! Ha ha ha ha ha! YAP YAP BANG!"

I feel like the only way Nextwave would work outside of comics would be as a completely and utterly bonkers animated series.

It should also be noted that Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. was on the Young Adult Library Services Association's 2007 Top Ten Great Graphic Novels for Teens. At which point, Warren Ellis said, "I do it all for the children. It is good to know that the young people of today are ready and waiting for me to form a Church."

Now I'm wondering who would play Dirk Anger. It's almost a shame Marvel nixed the use of Nick Fury in Nextwave. I'm pretty sure Samuel L. Jackson wouldn't have minded portraying this interpretation of the character.

So who else might fit? Dwayne Johnson? Jason Statham?

[up]Ah, The Church of Father Blood Drench Robo Crush.

Ideally it's someone who looks like a typical action hero but is also very good at acting like a complete nutjob.

Their audition? Have them all recite the quotes mentioned earlier.

Wait, why on earth would he know? They haven't even written the script yet, so there's no way Angela Bassett has read the story yet, and there's no reason whatsoever her husband would know about it if it were true.

I'm guessing that little girl is Monica Rambeau? Her mother is Carol's friend in this, right?

Monica being a kid in the 90's would make her old enough to be an adult superhero in the present. Clever.

Would anyone be interested in a film where something like The Watchers play central role? Like the premise of the film is about The Watchers observing the marvel universe as it plays out,it's interesting at least, they've been in Guardians of Galaxy as I recall

[up]x5 Yeah, I do think this was the best way to handle the large time skip between Captain Marvel and any sequels while having Monica Rambeau being roughly the same apparent age as Carol when she likely gets her powers.

And by including Maria Rambeau in a major supporting role, the first Captain Marvel movie isn't robbed of a Monica-type character.
