Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

While I think it's more pragmatic to cast someone who already is, personally I'm more willing to forgive the actress not being a Muslim than not being Pakistani, in the same way I'm more willing to forgive a character who is a certain sexual orientation being played by someone whose orientation is different, because those aspects are more performative and therefore can be remedied by consulting with people who are more knowledgeable.
"The address the issue as it happens".
BRILLIANT Idea. Let's discuss this once there actually IS a Ms Marvel movie. And a casting. This discussion has become way too personal and way too entrenched.
So...I have finally made a decision if I like Got G or Vol 2 better. And the result is: Got G. Basically the last 30 minutes or so of Vol 2 are just amazing, I love everything about it, but the way to get there is a little bit, well, wobbly. In Got G, I love every single scene. But in Vol 2 I kind of space out whenever Yondu, Rocket and Nebula aren't on screen.
But the father and son scene...still let's me dissolve in tears. Just...wow....
Thing is, Pakistan as we know it today is a relatively new country, only existing since the late 1940's. Prior to that, the borders of government(s) in the region changed drastically over the millennia. As such, there's no such thing as a Pakistani ethnic group. There are a few ethnic groups that make up the bulk of Pakistan's population, but those ethnic groups can also be found in large numbers in either neighboring India or neighboring Afghanistan. So when casting a Pakistani character, there are many Indian or Afghani actors who'd be just as racially appropriate for the role.
Now, if you're casting a character who's actually from Pakistan, then you might want to get an actor who is as well, just so they get the language and/or accent right. But if you're casting a Pakistani-American, someone who was born in the U.S. to Pakistani immigrants, then that's not going to be an issue, and I have a hard time seeing how what country the actor's parents are from would matter. Nationality isn't some intrinsic trait that you can inherit.
I mean, suppose you have two actors, A and B. Both were born in the United States. A's parents were born in Pakistan, but their grandparents were born in Afghanistan, and most of their ancestors for several generations back lived in that country, not Pakistan. Meanwhile, B's parents were born in Afghanistan, but their grandparents were born in Pakistan, and most of their ancestors for several generations back lived in that country, not Afghanistan. Is one really more appropriate to play a Pakistani-American than the other?

Not to mention that's inflammatory to the point of my, at least, not wanting to bother if the thread is trying to move on. A comment like that has to start a whole new conversation about history/society/what it means to be a culture group worthy of representation/etc, and this has been addressed over and over again already and has gone on long enough.
If people in general decide start up the convo again, then sure, but literally this entire page has been people asking for this to be dropped, so I think we should pass on that.
What was that about GOTG 2? The death of Yondu? Yep, still the best death scene in the MCU in my opinion. Better than Spidey's death, even. The tears, man.
This is a random thing to think about - I guess it's something that pops in there because I'm a Star Wars fan - but it's one of my favorite uses of Big "NO!" in a movie, too.

It's my favourite dead in any Superhero movie and my favourite funeral scene ever. It just..it breaks my heart, makes me happy cry, both at the same time. It's perfect.
But it doesn't quite make up for the pacing of the movie as a while. And the potty humour. Takes me out of the movie every single time!
I thought we had an interesting conversation going. Not like it's the wildest tangent this thread's ever gone on; we've had multiple, lengthy discussions about what Marvel Studios should do with the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, and we're not even sure they're getting the rights back yet.
But if we're switching to favorite death scenes in the MCU . . . yeah, hard to top Yondu.
WELL THEN. That was a lot to read through. I don't have anything of substance to add other than a simple boring "they should get a Pakistani/Pakistani-American girl for the role, simple as that". Even if I don't read comics Kamala is one of if not my absolute most wanted characters for the MCU and I want her integration into film to be done right.
Anyway. I'm firmly in the "Got G 2 > Got G 1 (and basically all other MCU movies)" camp because no other part of the franchise has resonated with me so well, let alone made me cry on multiple viewings. It's just a wonderful movie all around. The visuals, the character writing (especially with how better across the board it is than in the first movie), the music, the themes, the directing, there's just so much love and heart put into this film and I'm so happy it came into my life around when it did.

Random Question: Are General Ross, and Agent Ross supposed to be related, or do they just have the same last name?
If they're related, that'd be hilarious to me, knowing General Ross has a relative who's almost his polar opposite (General Ross being antagonistic towards the Avengers, while Agent Ross is more helpful).
Like creepy stories? Check out my book!

Dudes, please, could we turn it down with the quoting battles again?
Let's just wait and see. There isn't even a movie announced yet.
