Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

If my information isn't incorrect, Wakanda in the comics is currently a democracy. Maybe they'll go that route too in the second film. The reformation process is only just starting, after all.
Certified: 48.0% West Asian, 6.5% South Asian, 15.8% North/West European, 15.7% English, 7.4% Balkan, 6.6% ScandinavianThe fact that, in the MCU, they've destroyed all the flowers that bestow the Black Panther's powers gives rise to some interesting plots, like how T'Challa can have a successor.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"You know what would be really interesting and really different from the first film? The first film took a lot of influence from Don McGregor's first story arc in Jungle Action, called "The Panther's Rage." If they do a second one, they could do his second arc..."The Panther vs. the Klan."
They could also bring in Malice, who was a separate character from Nakia during the Dan McGregor/Billy Graham run.

I'm pretty solidly convinced they're going to adapt A Nation Under Our Feet, the arc that turned Wakanda into a constitutional monarchy, but with a dash of Achebe thrown into the mix.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."He showed up in a Thor movie. I don't see why it should be impossible for him to be in a Black Panther movie.

Like creepy stories? Check out my book!I’d prefer Strange stay far away, but that’s my own personal anti-Cumberbatch grudge, which I acknowledge is entirely subjective. His tiny cameo in Thor was tolerable, he was okay in Infinity War, but I want the Black Panther sequel to focus on our incredible ensemble cast, not steal time from M’baku or Okoye to give Strange a cameo.
I thought Dr. Strange was great in both Ragnarok and Infinity War.
While the movie Black Panther is better than the Dr. Strange film, I don't think it's that much better. The difference in quality between them is mostly by virtue of Black Panther having such a strong villain (and a better supporting cast).
Chadwick Boseman's good, but he's mostly a flat Straight Man throughout his own film. He's got charisma and a few strong scenes, but T'Challa is one of the weakest parts of Black Panther. On the flipside, Benedict Cumberbatch's acting is one of the highlights of Dr. Strange.
Honestly, most of the Dr. Strange hate seems like pure Hype Backlash against his (apparently, I haven't really seen much of it) rabid fanbase. I really didn't get the complaints about him being "overexposed" when he was first cast, he's not in that much stuff.
I think BP is much MUCH better all around and I'm much more sold on Chadwick as T'Challa than Benedict as Strange (then again, with that movie's writing quality, not sure if any actor could do much for it), but ok. Can't win 'em all I guess. I'll give you that Strange was cool in IW at least.
Self-serious autistic trans gal who loves rock/metal and animation with all her heart. (she/her)My main issue with the Doctor Strange movie is I felt his origin story should have taken place BEFORE the attack in New York, or maybe while the events of the first Iron Man were happening.
I dunno, Strange seems too... held together and oblivious to the rest of the world, for a guy that lives in a city where aliens attacked.
That aside, the movie overall is fine.
Like creepy stories? Check out my book!I strongly disagree. The story in Strange was a pretty rote copy of Iron Man, none of the characters were fleshed out besides Strange, the sets and costuming were derivative at best and cultural appropriation at worst, the humor fell flat, and the action choreography was poor. The Dormammu sequence was the only interesting bit, and even that wasn’t set up very well. And it’s not just that the supporting cast in Black Panther were better, it’s that every character in Black Panther is well written as a human being with a life and a perspective outside of T’challa.
Doctor Strange is one of my least favorite MCU films, while Black Panther is one of my favorite ones. I think that says enough.
I think the movies stand on opposite sides as far as their strengths go as well. Doctor Strange uses spectacle as a prop to bolster its threadbare script and characterization, whereas Black Panther has such a rich cast that the action sequences where less of that is happening are actually among its weaker moments. Neither are the most original film, but whereas Dr. Strange apes off of the first Iron Man, Black Panther complements the fresher and recent-enough to be a coincidence Thor Ragnarok.
