Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

We had this discussion before, and I think I already explained why I think that Black Panther is the weaker movie (hell, in a "best MCU movie" list it wouldn't even break my top five...maybe top 10 and I am not sure about that one either). And I don't belittle it, I am realistic about its chances. Not movie has ever won best picture without also winning in the director/actor/screenplay categories. A movie which isn't even nominated for any of those categories has zero chance.
At the very least, I hope Black Panther wins two Oscars. That way, we can say it has more than the Academy Award-winning film Suicide Squad

If any Marvel movie would get nominated for that, it would be Black Panther.
This song needs more love.![]()
Or, crazy idea, we could stop this stupid rivalry that helps no one.

Ehhhhh, the Oscars were never a "Which movie is best" competition, useless as something like that would be, but a giant marketing campaign. Hell, as our page for Gary Oldman says, you need to go out of your way to earn any awards.

I wonder if Ant-Man lagging behind the rest of the MCU is due to lackluster marketing or the inherent weirdness of the concept for fans. The films themselves are completely serviceable.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I think it is mostly because those movies are geared towards a slightly different audience. They are smaller and more family friendly. And they never got the "big event and you can't miss this" feel. But the sequel made more than the first movie, so Marvel should be satisfied with the result.

It's weird, because If Beale Street Could Talk seems like an Academy favorite, too, but no Best Director nod.
I also would have loved to see Bad Times at the El Royale nominated for anything, because it was awesome, but nobody saw it. Hell, Cynthia Erivo
was amazing in it. I'm also surprised Widows and Steve McQueen didn't get any nominations, but I guess that's because the Academy really favors dramas over thrillers. And nothing for Blindspotting or Eighth Grade? Tragic.

I notice in other places no one ever comments on any other film nominated for awards that "Infinity War should've been nominated!" Just when Black Panther gets any recognition.
It's a bit jarring that The Hate U Give pretty much hasn't been nominated for anything, despite universal critical acclaim.

What was Vice about, and what were the problems with it? I don't remember hearing about that movie?
Oh God! Natural light!Vice was the Dick Cheney biopic; apparently critics were lukewarm on the film and audiences didn’t like it much either.
