Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

One could assume the thing can give him a passive boost.

Though yeah its pretty clear.

Nah, Thanos has to clench his fist to actually activate the Stones' powers. And it's very obvious when he does.

He does never use it for anything else.

Like no strength boosts or anything...... not that he needs it.

He also created a forcefield with it on Titan. He also used it to slowly overload Thor's ship. At one point he even uses it to absorb and redirect the explosion of Tony's missiles into a beam of fire.

The stone always give out that buzzing sound and glow in their respective colour when they are used, neither of which was the case in that fight.

It would have been pretty lazy too. I mean Thanos was described as the Universe's most powerful being repeadetly even BEFORE he had any of the stones, so him kicking the Hulk's ass without them was more or less necessary.

He combined the Power and Space Stone powers to destroy and throw that moon. I think he also used the Power Stone on Earth, maybe that was when he knocked Steve aside?

I'm wondering...everyone seems to be sure that Mysterio is pulling a Syndrome"

It should be noted that Syndrome originally pulled a Mysterio. Mysterio's original debut in ASM #13 consisted of him framing Spider-man for crimes he committed dressed up as Spider-man, and introducing himself (in the Mysterio suit) as the hero who could save the day. So, setting up a problem in order to fix it to gain public approval is his original MO. Now, they could be trying to subvert it of course, because this isn't exactly a secret, but then the movie going audience isn't necessarily savvy on 1960's Spider-Man plotlines, so...

Incidentally, I'm slightly surprised they managed to get someone of Jake Gyllenhaal's calibre to do Mysterio since he tends to go for far more serious character roles, but I have basically endless confidence in the man. He has a reputation of being a chameleon actor, and basically excels at any role given to him. It would have been fitting if he played the Chameleon to be honest, but that character isn't quite big enough to be an MCU movie main villain.

The FFH international trailer also shows Peter with his spider-suit going through customs, and he seems surprised that it's in his suitcase. Thus, my guess that Aunt May sneaks it in behind his back is probably accurate. Still no idea how it passes the X-ray machine undetected; maybe that's just more Stark tech at work.

You really don't need to be particularly savvy about Comic plotlines to know that if in a Superhero movie another hero conveniently turns up and upstages the hero protagonist, it usually turns out to be a villain in the end.

I wouldn't mind it if Marvel subverts the old trope a little bit.

[up] True, but perspective still matters.

  • If you know who Mysterio is from reading the comics, then you'll immediately expect him to be pulling a scam since that's what he does almost every time he shows up.
  • If you have no idea who Mysterio is, then you'll see Jake Gyllenhaal in a weird costume upstaging Spider-Man, and you may or may not suspect him of being the real villain depending on how savvy you are to this particular trope.

Either way, if the Big Reveal is that, "whoops, Mysterio is a villain", it'll feel a bit hollow compared to the truly brilliant twist from Homecoming, so I hope it's more complex than that.

[up] I agree. Repeating his introductory plot with no other twist or turn would be kinda stale (since it's been done a LOT in superhero stories since his debut) and it's also kind of a plain unsatisfying plot development. I also expect most moviegoers to at least recognise Mysterio as a villain (he's not exactly Z-list) and to be dubious of his motives. However, I think that this is what's happening in the events shown in the trailer, and I hope they merely use it and the "reveal" of Mysterio as a villain as a setup for some other plot point.

What they could do is set up an I Know You Know I Know for the audience, with Peter suspecting Mysterio of being a fraud and the film keeping us guessing about whether he's correct right until the critical moment.

With access to the Internet, I think general audiences would suspect Mysterio to be the baddie even if they haven't been paying attention to the comics. It's not exactly a secret with media articles mentioning Mysterio's comic book history as one of Spider-Man's classic villains in the Rogues Gallery. I mean, Mysterio has appeared in cartoons, video games, and other forms of media as a bad guy. This trailer is the first time that he's being depicted as a hero.

I do wonder if future trailers are going to play up to the direction or try a different route.

I still like my old idea for a Mysterio movie.

Basically, the movie starts with Spider-Man fighting a small alien invasion, led by an alien emperor.

Peter defeats the alien, but then he finds out that the alien invasion was fake the whole time, and it was faked by the new campy goofy villain Mysterio.

Peter fights Mysterio, and he does some digging into him, discovering that Mysterio is actually a much more serious and dark threat than he lets on, with a dark backstory about how he used to be a special effects guy named Quentin Beck.

Turns out Mysterio planned for Peter to discover his secret identity, which is why that whole backstory was fake. The real Mysterio's secret identity is the actor playing him. In the MCU, the actor Jake Gyllenhaal decided to become a supervillain. Spider-Man outwits Jake Gyllenhaal's master plan, whatever the hell it is, and he defeats Jake Gyllenhaal Mysterio as edgy Quentin Beck Mysterio as campy goofy Mysterio as the alien emperor.

I’m loving the music for Far From Home. It sounds like the Spider-Man theme crossed with a James Bond theme, which is great for an international adventure.

Between Captain Marvel, Endgame, and this, it’s looking like a fantastic year for the MCU.

At this point I hope that Captain Marvel will crush the box office AND will be rightly one of the best movies Marvel has ever done - just to shut up those annoying Anti-SJW.

I wonder if this year can beat the last, which was the previous best year for the MCU.

I'm judging this based on quality and quantity of movies. 2018 had Black Panther, Infinity War, and Ant-Man and The Wasp. Captain Marvel vs Black Panther is a rough comparison, since both are incredibly important for similar reasons. Guess we'll have to wait and see how Captain Marvel stacks up. Comparing Endgame to Infinity War might seem unfair after it comes out, since they're two halves of the same story. Ant-Man and The Wasp was fantastic, but I could see Far From Home surpassing it.

I mean, there was also Venom last year, but it's an edge case in terms of whether or not it's in the MCU, and the quality of it is...debatable, to put it mildly. I figured those two elements evened it out to a neutral influence of 2018's MCU quality, neither positive nor negative.

I don’t expect this year to beat last year in terms of MCU boc office. Black Panther was an Event. It made way more than anyone was expecting.

If Captain Marvel makes something in the $300 or $400 mil range, I’ll be satisfied. I have no expectations of $700 mil.

Isn't Venom like 100% not in the MCU?

I kind of expect Endgame to overshadow the other MCU films this year but that wasn't super the case with Infinity War (Black Panther did pretty well) so who knows.
