Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

He's even lower on the totem pole.

It really doesn't matter to me where they come on the totem poll, what matters to me is how cool their powers are ,I'd actually like to see some fairly obscure spiderman villains get re imagined as legit threats

I mean, Mysterio is more or less a joke in the comics anyway. As was the Vulture (he's usually a geriatric whose nose is more distinctive than his costume).

They're not obscure, but they make for better threats against a newer, young Spiderman than the more competent experienced Peter Parker of the comics.

What about Mr. Negative, he's the villain of the more recent Video Game, right?

Uhhh, I just got in, actually, I thought we were just throwing names around tongue.

I mean, they already used the Shocker, how much lower can one go?

I think Hydro-Man’s thing is “Extremly broken power but too stupid to use it”.

Hell Shocker kicked his ass handily.

So when I say he’s low on the totem pole, I really mean it.

So if Hydro-Man was thrown into the ocean, would he die by having his conscience dissipated or would he gain a massive power boost by controlling all salt water in the world?

I think it's the second one.

In fact, what you're describing basically happened in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon.

My biggest exposure to Hydro-Man was from the 90's cartoon, where he was MJ's Stalker with a Crush and actually was pretty creepy for the show's standards. A man who won't take no for an answer who has the ability to sneak any location whether it be a faucet or a crack in the wall? That's pretty terrifying and I feel that episode covered the material. It also helped it had some of the best animation in the whole show, so Hydro-Man's powers really shined.

I also like how MJ essentially kicked his ass, with even Spidey himself lamp shading how badly she outplayed him once he caught up.

One thing I am worried about is that these elemental monsters will sabotage any chance of having Sandman or Hydro-Man in the MCU given their similarities.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!

And later in the 90 show someone made a clone of Hydron man and Mary jane and....she kick is ass, again.

Y'know, after The Amazing Spider-Man 2, I don't think the MCU is going to pull the dead girlfriend trick on Peter again. Especially how poorly handled it was the first time around.

[down] Ah. Yeah, being a pile of ash can put a hamper on your dating life. You can understand my confusion though, considering how some of Peter's previous relationships turned out.

To be clear, I was jokignly referring to Peter dying in Infinity War as messing up his relationship.

Scorpion hasn't been in live-action yet, there's one semi-notable Spidey villain. Same with Kraven the Hunter.

[up]x 8. I can see PPP/Trapster as a "cold opening" villain a la Batroc in Winter Soldier.

Far From Home international trailer, with different footage.

Probably the least important and notable change is that international Flash calls Peter a "loser" instead of a "dickwad".
