Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Funny. I think some of the ideas Sony wanted to do with Spider Man before the Marvel deal (according to the Sony Hack) involved him going to Europe. So they sorta get what they want.
Mysterio looks good.

Nod to the fans, I guess. She's clearly a different character, so just roll with it.
The tone of this film tells me either that it's set between Homecoming and Infinity War or that Endgame pushes some sort of Reset Button so that most people don't even know that the Snap happened.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I don't mind it. I think the idea is that she will grow into a more traditional MJ as the movies go by.
I do wish they had used Black Cat though.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."THEY KEPT MYSTERIO'S FISHBOWL HELMET!!! YES!!!
That's all I really wanted. I'm being going to be a bit wary with any further trailers though. After Homecoming's last trailer, I'm a bit wary of too many spoilers being given away.
And yes, I know the trailers kept the Vulture reveal a secret. But they pretty much spoiled everything else, such as how the ferry scene would end and Tony taking the suit.

I love the Far From Home trailer. Like, everything about it: Aunt May being okay with Peter as Spider-Man and high fiving him, May and Happy Hogan flirting, Peter deciding to leave his spider-suit behind but then getting hijacked by Nick Freakin' Fury, him and MJ awkwardly flirting, and FUCK YEAH MYSTERIO.
Also: yes, that is totally MJ. She is the MJ of this universe. Get over it.
I really hope this trailer means we can finally put to bed the argument about whether or not she's really supposed to be MJ.
She's MJ. This is happening.
Also more of The Ramones, which is always welcome. I’m guessing that’s because both come from the same part of Queens.
The choice of "I Wanna Be Sedated" over the trip montage is brilliant, if a bit cliched.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"My issue with the MJ thing is that it feels like they completely chickened out on actually making her Mary Jane Watson in order to sidestep all of the complaining. Like jeez, have a backbone.
Regardless, I'm glad to see Mr. Fishbowl.

This song needs more love.
Funny thing: as you said that I was reminded of a "blink and you'll miss it" background item in Homecoming: the school PA at the beginning mentions Betty Brant, whom fans will recognize as J Jonah Jameson's secretary and a minor love interest for Peter.
I have absolutely no problem with race lifting the cast and replacing "Mary Jane Watson" with "Michelle Jones". It really feels like people are going out of their way to be insulted.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Back when "Spider-Man: Homecoming" was still being hyped in interviews and casting announcements and such, there was a lot of momentum around Zendaya's casting. I don't remember exactly how, but the fandom latched onto the idea that she was cast to play MJ. The studio initially pushed back on these rumors, but the fans loved them; Zendaya-as-MJ became a goddamn phenomenon for its progressiveness, even after the studio finally came out and said she's playing a character called Michelle.
At the time, I was pretty sure the fandom had jumped the gun, but I did note that the studio had a potential opportunity here to win free diversity points. All they had to do was add a little reveal to the end of the movie where it turns out Michelle was totes MJ all along and BOOM, fans feel vindicated and Marvel falls ass-backwards into a major diversity win.
Then "Homecoming" came out, and I honestly feel like that's exactly what they did. People love the idea of Zendaya as MJ, so they put a little bit at the end to validate it and soaked in the applause.
The biggest point of concern was whether or not they'd actually commit to it going forward, and the "Far From Home" trailer makes clear that they know exactly what the opportunity they're sitting on means to their audience and aren't going to let it go to waste.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.She got a job working for Tony Stank.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Good trailer. Definitely leaning into the theory that all the elemental villains are actually illusions created by Mysterio who is trying to make himself look like a hero.
Though part of me thinks that theory is too obvious, and that there's going to be another layer here. Like for example perhaps Mysterio is faking the villains because he wants to be seen as a hero, but in doing so attracts the attention of a real villain and this leads to a Spider-Man/Mysterio teamup.
First off, I love that they're finally putting back Flash's admiration for Spider-Man, and it makes for a great joke!
Second, I feel this version of Mysterio has actually learned to use magic, but he rejected the whole "Protector from the Shadows" thing Kamar Taj enforces and instead uses his powers to make himself a celebrity.
Lastly, on the one hand, I'll really miss the OG!MJ Fun Personified personality, on the other, the awkward romance between Michelle and Peter is really cute, so I'll give it a chance to change my view on this.
Still think they should dye her hair red, though, and I'm never budging on this.

I can't deal with the MJ thing. I just can't.
If she had been just Michelle, I could let it be.
As big as a fan of Peter/MJ I am, I can deal with him having other love interests.
Loved Peter/Liz for the short time it lasted in Spectacular, felt Peter/Gwen in Amazing was its one saving grace, and Peter/Chat in Adventures is one of his best drama-free romances.
But the nickname thing is just a step too far.
I can't.
The movies can do what they want on that front.
