Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Peter's powerset as a whole zig-zags like Hell, like the classic "warns him just in time for him to get hit" spider-sense and reflexes, which sometimes easily keep him safe from bullets but sometimes can't help him dodge a regular, human punch coming at his face.

Watched the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and I have to comment on this one bit of dialogue...

Gamora: "I'm going to die surrounded by the biggest idiots in the galaxy."

Me: "Well, I guess Thanos and Red Skull are the biggest idiots in the galaxy...."

I’m not sure which is a worst death, with Thanos or Quill.

....... Shit at least Quill has Rocket & Groot.

At least if Quill were able to fulfill the promise all the way through Thanos wouldn't be able to locate the Soul Stone.

[up] But he did fulfill his promise — he shot Gamora, it's just that Thanos turned his energy blasts into bubbles. What, was he suppose to shoot Gamora before she was captured by Thanos? I think even Gamora would have objected to that.

Ok, shoulda worded that better. At least if Gamora died at Quill's hands Thanos wouldn't have any way of locating the Soul Stone.

By the time Gamora thought she had killed Thanos, it was already too late. Thanos had the Reality Stone, and he would've stopped Quill from shooting her using it even if he had tried sooner. The Guardians fell into an unbeatable trap.

The biggest mistake is going to Thanos in the first place instead of anywhere else.

The biggest mistake was not killing Thanos before he got even one Infinity Stone.

[up][up]TBF, Nebula apparently tried that, and failed.

Even without any Infinity Stones, he's still a super strong behemoth with an army at his beck and call and a bunch of superpowered "children" at his side.

Gamora maybe could have done had she taken advantage of his trust for her.

Though considering she believed he never loved her, she assumed he would never drop his guard even around her.

[up] Then again it is Nebula. She weak.

He should've shot her without announcing his presence, giving Thanos plenty of time to react.

Thanos isn't stupid. He knew Quill and the others were coming before they even arrived, hence why he arranged an illusion to trick them. There was no "without announcing his presence," Thanos knew he was there the whole time.

[up][up]Outright reviving the dead might be beyond even the Reality Stone's power. At least, it wouldn't be permanent. Note that just about every reality warping in the movie is temporary. The biggest exception of course being The Snap itself.

We have no indication that the Reality Stone can raise the dead. And while Thanos knows the Guardians are there, he doesn't know how many or where specifically they're located in the room. Quill might've gotten off a surprise shot.

The Time Stone can reverse a death (it literally did with Vision), but it requires a specific set of circumstances to do so. The Soul Stone could probably outright raise the dead, but the whole point of killing Gamora was to prevent Thanos from getting the Soul Stone.

Then again, if even Nebula could come close to killing him with two stones, one would wonder why Gamora [an objectively better fighter] or even another overpowered character bent on universal domination (Ego) couldn't have finished the job earlier.
