Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Only sort of. Like, there are scenes during and immediately after Civil War, but a period of time passes between those scenes and when Peter runs afoul of the Chitauri-powered robbery.
At the start of the movie, Peter sends an unclear amount of time doing the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man thing, leaving voicemails for Happy with updates, and waiting for his next Avengers gig.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. He's a sophomore in Homecoming. If we add two years between that and Infinity War, he'd be a senior. The timeline is consistent, and there is room for intermediate stories, although you do run into the problem that it'd be tricky to maintain the Tony Stark mentorship thing while the Iron Spider suit sits there like a dangling plot thread.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The timeline is another one of those things where I forget that this is an actual thing people worry about, because I read the comics and the official comic timeline is "LOL".
The comics use a sliding timescale. Events don't take place at specific points in time, but rather at relative points. For instance, Peter Parker started being Spider-Man in the year "X-10", where X is whatever year it happens to be right now. The age of heroes began with the Fantastic Four's fateful flight in the year X-15.
I've gotten so used to this that I sometimes forget that it's actually kind of insane and most people expect clear and consistent dates for stuff.
I laugh at those who complain about timeline inconsistencies in the MCU, because they pail in comparison to the Gordian Knot that are the X-Men films. MCU fans should consider themselves lucky.
Internal consistency within a film universe. What a strange idea, amirite?
Anyway, I'm not concerned with the precise timeline so much as I am with the continuity between story and character elements. While there is room in the calendar for FFH to take place between HC and IW, I don't see that it makes sense thematically. (I'm willing to be wrong, of course.)

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Watching the Hyper RPG review just now reminded me of the one major sequel hook: Aunt May discovering Peter's identity. That and the MJ plot... you know what, I take it back. There's lots of room for an interquel.
Also, my favorite running gag in the film is Captain America's PSAs. Because of course the government would use him that way. And the gym teacher saying, "I think he's a war criminal now, but I have to play this." Gold. Which of course all sets up the final end credits scene where Cap just gives up on the whole mess. ![]()

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"What is the movie about, anyway? Did they already gave out an official synopsis, or are we still in the phase of just throwing wild theories around and seeing which one sticks?
That's good, but the best joke in the movie by far is "I'm...watching...porn."
The delivery was just spot-on.

Apparently, Spider-Man is recruited by Nick Fury over something regarding Elementals. And his partner is Mysterio.
That's the gist of it, I think. The only real wild theories being thrown around is whether it takes place before Infinity War or after Endgame.

Ned's character is a gem from the first minute he's on screen. He's so delightfully geeky and earnest that it makes my heart melt. He reminds me of friends I had in high school.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Another thing that review pointed out: the best pure Spider-Man scene is the one where he has to lift the rubble that he's trapped under. That is straight from the original comics, and is perfectly captured on film. What is Spider-Man, really? He's not gadgets and super suits; he's a kid with super strength and reflexes and the will to protect the things he cares about.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"That's because in the comics he's fighting to save Aunt May and he's so devastated that he's failed that being buried under tons of rubble is the least of his concerns.
In this, there's no direct threat to anyone but him, so in a sense it's about finding the strength to save himself so he can stop Vulture. Proving that he really has what it takes when the chips are down and all that.
One Strip! One Strip! He also falls for the "collapse the building" trick, which a more experienced hero might not.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

Peter is 15 in Homecoming, but I'm not sure where exactly that falls between Civil War and Infinity War. Regardless, adding 2 years means he's still in high school, albeit a senior.
I don't think anyone who's seen anything about the future of the MCU is even slightly confused about whether particular characters are coming back in Endgame. To have FFH set pre-IW would be very awkward, never mind messing with the idea that it represents the opening of Phase 4, which is supposed to be the post-IW/EG Marvel verse.
