Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I see it the other way around. If the movie would actively debate Thanos plan, than we would have a problem, because than it would suggest that he might have a point. By flat out saying "no, this is terrible", and then showing the consequences of a plan like this, it does exactly the correct thing.

[up][up][up]I feel like some context is missing here.

[down]Personally, I'm still trying to figure out what's with Thanos obsession with bubbles.

All this talk about Gamora's death, and all I can think of is the Special Effect Failure of her plummeting to her doom.

What special effect failure? Do you mean the weird cut? Well, apparently they had to change the scene because the original version wasn't PG-13 enough….

I disagree tusker, a point is not to prove the other one is wrong but to deflate the sense ofimportance over it, trying to probe the alt is wrong is not the issue but deflate their pretensiousness and revealing they as cringy or even more than their "enemies".

About thannos....yeah My problem is twofold: is reason is particulary stupid "I need to kill half of the universe for resources!", like if he try to impress death it would be better for me, specially because we dont see any of is backstory.

Now I do agree audience expectation are intersting: Like nothing said Thanos is simpathic, no is invasion of New york, not giving Loki is the scepter, no the theory of using the mind stone to influence Ultron, is treatment of gamorra and Nebula, Killing the dwarfs, killing the asgardian, Choking Lokin to death, invading Earth AGAIN.

And yet he dosent rant like a maniac and because of that he deserve simpathy?.

Again, Punisher.

Also, Captain Marvel looks neat. Still hate the mohawk. Coulson's back. Young Samuel L. Jackson.

I just... can't stand them... not on Mr. T, not on Storm, and not on Carol Danvers. I'm not into the punk rock look - piercings, mohawks, heavy tattoos are just fashion no-no's for me.

She does looks ready to whoop all sorts of ass, so I suppose it does it's job.

What is noticeable is that Marvel is really cagey regarding Captain Marvel. Not quite as much as they are regarding Endgame, but I wonder if this is part of a new marketing strategy (in: We stop revealing everything in the trailers because the audience keeps complaining about it), or if there is a big twist they want to hide.

Guardians 2 is still on that list of movies I should watch but won't because I'm stubborn and I feel like I got most of what I need to know about its cast out of Infinity War.

That said, I googled a picture of Yondu. He looks like the love child between Frieza and a Smurf.

Here's hoping because Suicide Squad, Terminator Genisys, and Batman v Superman have poisoned me. I was pleasantly surprised when the Endgame trailer told us jack. I'm worried that it was all a trick and Marvel's going to push out 4 more trailers just to compensate.

I like a good mohawk. I think it'd be better if it were even bigger, though. Go all the way Super Saiyan with it.

[up]Pretty sure Peter called him Papa Smurf at one point. Not sure if it happened in the movies, in the Telltale game, or if I'm just imagining it, but it sounds like something Quill would say.

Yeah I agree, they should have made it bigger.

Go big or go broke as they say. Its like if your getting a pompadour, it has to be swept up lest you wind up looking like a massive douche-bag.

That's why I really like Yondu's proto-fin.

Except Guardians 2 uses the Guardians cast so much better than Infinity War does. It's a great movie with really great themes in it — better than the first Guardians, actually.

Also, this is generally what Carol's mohawk looks like, so I thought they did a good job.

Well I wouldn't say entirely better.

Drax is kind of just a joke-machine aside from giving Quill romantic advice & relating to Mantis.

He does have good jokes but he really doesn't feel like a Destroyer anymore.

I mean, he jumped inside a monster's mouth and stabbed it from the inside. That seemed pretty Destroyer-ish.

But he lacks the rage.

And the fact Gamora & Quill immediately pointed out afterwards how stupid & ineffective the idea was makes him look like hot-headed dumbass than a Destroyer.

A far cry from the character who once made a generator that knocked out all the people on a space-station without anyone knowing to find some Skrulls.
