Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I will never ever agree with complaints of "forced" or "pandering" when it comes to inclusion. It's like just because a story wants to have a same-sex relationship or a female lead, suddenly it's "too political" like there's magically a new set of rules that must be followed that didn't exist before.

As a different way of looking at it, note that the continuing overrepresentation of straight, white men is never seen as "forced homogeneity".

I remember when blokes kept insisting “Gal Gadot seems so wooden, the trailers don’t show enough, this movie is doomed” and then the movie premiered and she was great and singlehandedly revived her whole franchise and became bigger than Superman and Batman.

[up][up]And seconded.

A week ago, Netflix gave Marvel Studios fans everywhere a timely Christmas present by releasing Avengers: Infinity War for streaming on Dec. 25...

For the past few weeks, you might have seen a meme circulating on social media informing people that if they were to start watching Avengers: Infinity War at a precise right time on Dec. 31, then the infamous scene where Thanos snaps his fingers to wipe out half of all life in the universe would take place at midnight exactly. Well, Reddit user u/gokunak did exactly that. By timing the watching of Infinity War just right, the clock stroke midnight precisely when Thanos snapped his Infinity Stones-powered fingers.

The latest in a line of dumb memes that you see in one place and immediately think "this must be a meme by now" and then you go somewhere else and voila, an article exists that points out the meme's existence.

I had no aspirations to watch Infinity War when the ball dropped but I'm amused that others did.

I'm just a grumpy old man about the word "meme" being watered down to "any short joke or funny image on the internet".

For some reason I got to wondering if Nick Fury knew about Wakanda.

The answer is yes, according to Jackson.

Had the weirdest idea for Wolverine appearing in the MCU

Peter goes to school, new Gym teacher named Mr.Logan, everyone expects him show off his claws because it's Hugh Jackman.

I imagine plenty of people had suspicions about Wakanda. The very practice of extreme isolationism would attract attention. Add in some reports of Wakandan aircraft near the boarder and Black Panther occasionally acting outside of Wakanda's boarders and someone like Fury could probably pieced things together to an extent.

I doubt anyone figured out that Wakanda didn't just have a secret Vibranium source, they had a whole mountain of the stuff. They aren't just hiding their settlements outside the boarder villages, they are hiding a whole city. They don't just have some vibranium tools, they mastered the stuff to the point where they are more technologically advanced than any nation.

[up]At best you can said someone in wakanda is ome of those weird costume people or maybe using wakanda as base of operation, or just saying is someone of a surronding country is black panther and using wakanda or some other thing.

I'm more of a Social Justice Paladin, myself.

Given my background in theater, I like to think of myself as a Social Justice Bard.

... dibs on Social Justice Cleric. Spellcasting is similar to law in that it’s arcane and a bunch of it doesn’t make sense but it’s suuuuuper important.

Oh no. No.

Time Travel?

I hate these kind of stories. Introducing this into the MCU? Oh please no.

I was kind of hoping that the fact that they haven't introduced Kang into the MCU so far meant they wouldn't pull this shit.

The Time Stone was bad enough. And that was only time manipulation, not outright time travel so far!

I'm going to reserve judgement until the film(s) give clarification on what exactly that statement means.
