Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Saw the newest trailer on TV, and just laughing at Clark Gregg's obvious hairpiece.
I honestly wasn't really expecting them to try that hard to make Coulson look younger.
Like creepy stories? Check out my book! There's some hilarity in Carol using a photon blast to prove she isn't a Skrull given there is a Skrull in the comics with a similar power.
If there is anything that I am willing to guess, it’s that she’s going to pull a He Really Can Act reaction when the movie is out to refute those claims.
Then we’ll do it because it’s funny.
[DATA LOST]As someone who doesn't like forced political or SJW themes in works (as they usually end up being the ends rather than telling a good story), I'm willing to give this movie a shot, so long as it remembers to put the story first. Heck, I'm all for female leads and diverse casts, and even applaud the ones that do well. It's just that again, as I always say, the themes need to be the icing, not the cake, and far too many don't seem to realize this fact, and make the diversity the means and ends themselves.
And part of the problem is that Larson has been rather combative on Twitter and the like. Which, while I can understand defending yourself against the trolls, doesn't do much to endear one to viewers.

I love the interplay between Carol and Nick in this. I hope it silences the imbecilic hate crowd, but of course it won't. It looks like they're giving her a sardonic sense of humor, which is great.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"![]()
If you get attacked for not "smiling" enough you have every right to hit back. And I loved the Smiling Ironman poster she posted.
Plus, he twitter isn't really all that different from what Chris Evans is usually posting.
In general: Look, I have criticized movie studios myself if they go and say "okay, we changed the gender, that is enough of an angle for a remake", but as a general rule, "forced diversity" is just another word for "bad writing for a character which is not a white male".
It makes sense to bring Captain Marvel in because obviously Feige wants to introduce the Scrulls. Hopefully he is working on a secret invasion arc, because it would be a perfect overreaching story now that they are nearly done with the infinity stones. And she also happens to be female. Marvel is using the fact in their marketing, but Captain Marvel happens for way more reason than someone at Marvel thinking "oh, it is really time for a female lead movie". If anything, Marvel has missed out on making them in the past due to the influence of Perlmutter and hiring Edgar Wright for the Ant-man Franchise (which should have been the Ant-man and the Wasp Franchise from the get go).
Plus if they are thinking of moving on from Iron Man then that leaves a gap for a snarky, flying energy blaster in the group synergy. Just so happens to be female this time. Not exactly a like for like as there is obviously less of a tech angle but team dynamics wise she could fill the Stark shaped gap in the line-up.
"These 'no-nonsense' solutions of yours just don't hold water in a complex world of jet-powered apes and time travel."I don't think that a one-for-one replacement of the old Avengers with the new ones would be necessary or even desirable.
That said, Captain Marvel does indeed bring the flying blaster archetype to the table, although I wonder if she'll retain her Binary Mode powerup forever or if it'll be a rare thing, with some sort of cost.
If we do indeed say goodbye to Steve, Tony, and Thor (at a minimum), then let's speculate on the new roles:
- Tech genius: Shuri, with Bruce and maybe Peter as backup.
- Eccentric wealthy person with a tech empire: T'Challa
- Flying blaster: Carol (and Vision?) Makes me wonder if he's going to be killed permanently, to avoid colliding roles.
- Spider-Man: Peter. I snark, but he's pretty unique as a character. If we have to give him a role, let's call it the Quipping Kid.
- Super-strong tank: Hulk? Assuming Ruffalo stays on, I'd love to see a Professor Hulk story. Otherwise, I don't know who'd fill this role.
- Buff god-like dude: ? Quill would be hilarious as a Thor-substitute, but he's not a Celestial any more so he'd need some kind of powerup. Maybe we'll say goodbye to the Asgardian story for now.
- Normals: Natasha and Clint.
- Magic users: Wanda and Strange. Competition here makes me wonder if one of them is going to die off. Fortunately, their powers are fairly different. If Vision dies and the Infinity Stones are destroyed, maybe Wanda will be depowered and/or retire?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Also, "forced diversity" is one of those phrases is that is meaningless and generally is only used when movies/shows/comics dare to use main characters who aren't white or male.

I'll bet anything that it's just the trailer cuts that are giving people the "she's so wooden" vibes. This new one shows that there's a lot of interplay between Carol and Nick, so that should help quell the naysayers.
What's telling is that people are singling out the [apparent] lack of emotion in Brie's trailer performance when they ignore the exact same thing in male leads. For one thing, she's a soldier, first on Earth, then for the Kree. When she puts on the uniform, she's all business, as any soldier would tell you. In, fact, she's the most straightforwardly military lead of any Marvel film. Add to that her memory loss and conditioning and it's not surprising that her initial aspect would be rather dull.
My expectation is that she'll start out very straight-laced and loosen up over the course of the film.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Saying there are forced SJW themes in this seems like projecting. Being the first film out of 20 with a solo female headliner is forced? What else is even political about it?
She also seems to have been brainwashed by the Kree — lightning through the brain and all that. And it seems obvious that they're holding off on a lot of the moments that come from when she gets her memory (and thus personality, and thus emotions) back.

The folks saying it are displaying their own insecurity. That said, the trailers playing up the "her" -> "a hero" thing was awesome at first but started to feel a bit repetitive by the third time. I guess that's the "forced" part that is triggering complaints, but given all the time we spend playing up male heroic role models in films, I think that we can feel justified in making a big deal of women getting one for once.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Honestly, while I sometimes (very, VERY few times) can get behind a few things those people are saying, SJW in itself is still a slur in my eyes and discredits whatever the person is trying to critique in 90% of the cases.
Certified: 48.0% West Asian, 6.5% South Asian, 15.8% North/West European, 15.7% English, 7.4% Balkan, 6.6% ScandinavianThe mere fact that they think calling someone a "social justice warrior" is an insult is saying something. Because social justice is so bad, you know?
I'll never get over how much "Social Justice Warrior" sounds like an amazing 80's cartoon.
"Nyah ha ha! Soon I, Commander Male-Man, shall complete my evil plan to blanket the world in PURE TESTOSTERONE! Soon, everyone with a Y chromosome will become wild, frothing MANLY MEN! Wait! What's this?! Oh no, the SOCIAL JUSTICE WARRIORS have arrived to foil my dastardly plans!"
"Stop right there, Male-Man! We've come to save the people of the Earth from your wretched schemes, and allow men to be sensitive and nurturing without feeling shame for their way of life!"

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Almost every time I've seen someone complain about SJ Ws ruining things or pandering or whatever, it's turned out to be baseless projection.
Seeing someone use "SJW" as an insult is a HUGE red flag for me.

Disgusted, but not surprised

God, I love the Snark-to-Snark Combat between Carol and Fury.
