Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

She is not Mary Jane.
Also, I found her to be an annoying character. I didn't find any of her behavior likeable.
And the "My fiends call me MJ" moment towards the end just rang hollow given her overall behavior outside of the rescue at the Washington Monument.
I much rather them have given more screen time to Liz.
I'll be honest, the idea of her becoming more prominent in MCU Spider-Man's future has the real potential of turning me off from that whole branch of the MCU.
Anyone know what role, if any she has in Far From Home? I mean there’s just enough wiggle room to make her a Red Herring for the actual redhead.
To me, Michelle was pretty fun for a character with under 5 minutes of screentime. She’s actually very similar in personality to my sister, who appreciated a lot a take on MJ who looks and acts just like her. She’d been hoping Michelle would cameo in Spider-Verse.

I really love Michelle because she reminds me of a girl I had a crush on in high school.
She shot me down, but we remained friends. Wonder what she's up to today.
wisewillow: Why not simply make the guy to be really sweet and an emotional support for the lady? Wouldn't that work?

We've seen a few cases where a powerful female character gets a weaker male love interest and it's done well. DCCU Wonder Woman comes to mind. A character can act as emotional/moral support without being coequal in power, and there's nothing stopping a male love interest from being eye candy. Chris Pine is delicious and I'm as straight as they come.
All that I really care about is whether the characters have good on-screen chemistry and the relationship is portrayed as consensual.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Whether for friendship or romance, I really don't think having Peter and Shuri meet is really all that hard. Especially now that Wakanda's no longer the Secret Isolationist Nation.
Shuri is T'Challa's sister, advisor, and engineer. Peter is Stark's sidekick and surrogate son. Stark and T'Challa are two earthshattering figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both of whom have major connections to the Avengers and an interest in world security.
So long as Stark doesn't die in Avengers 4, it'd be more unusual if Shuri and Peter were never in the same room than if they were.
EDIT: I mean, she'd more likely meet Spider-Man than Peter Parker, but MCU Pete isn't too paranoid about his secret identity. He already introduced himself by name to Doctor Strange in Infinity War. I doubt he'd be too concerned about the mask if he was hanging out in Wakanda on official Avengers business.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I’m reminded of Batman: The Brave and The Bold where Bats was captured alongside Steve Trevor & while Bats was trying to free himself, Steve was just there chilling.
His faith in Wonder Woman is so 100% resolute that he handled nuclear detonation with a total laissez-fair attitude that disturbed even Batman.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I think even if Tony does die in Endgame, you could still justify them meeting by, say, T'Challa taking a leading role in form a sort of worldwide Avengers Initiative or something.
Oh God! Natural light! It never fails to amaze me how, before getting into Marvel, M&M wrote the Narnia movies.
Christ, those two came a long way.
I dunno, I think most of the world would be quite wary of Wakanda, and not unjustifiably so, after all, an impossibly advanced nation hidden beneath the world's notice who is perfectly capable of funding uprisings throughout the whole planet tends to raise a few red flags. Don't think anyone would be all that enthused into letting T'Challa run any initiative like that, or at least not by himself.

DCAU Batman would have just as much faith in Diana, but he would still try his best to get out because he is a bro and bros don't let their bros fight alone, bro!

Peter getting into a Love Triangle with Shuri and Michelle could be good for some amusement, as it plays into the plague of bad luck that always follows him around, and could easily be spun into a conflict between the normal and super sides of his life. Plus, he's a teenager, and thus it's more believable for him to be dorky around women.
Edited to add: I'm not shipping anyone here, nor am I suggesting that either female character be relegated to the role of love interest. I just appreciate the built-in opportunity for character conflict that is, after all, at the heart of any good story.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Regarding dating up, across, down, honestly, I don't like the concept, and I don't personally apply the thought of it to just women or female characters. I only brought it up because of the situation applied.
And yes, dating in law school can be hard. I didn't get a single date or even mutual interest, despite male and female friends assuring me I'm "such a great guy", "you'll find someone!". So yeah, I can understand, but I probably shouldn't complain more in open discussion. However, I would like someone to talk to about dating in law school, the myth of "worth" or "levels", etc, so we can PM if you want. Or maybe there's a troper coven for it.
In the 2015 ultimates, a new Triskelion for international cooperation was formed from the three lines of Wakanda, Canada (Alpha Flight), and America (Under Carol Danvers, who effectively bossed Alpha Flight as well). I could see the MCU doing something similar.
I liked Homecoming's MJ, quite a lot. Also, one of my favorite things was how butthurt racists and people afraid to confront America's history got when she quite rightly pointed out that the Washington Monument is one of many American monuments in which slaves did the building. It's not like it even interrupted the movie, they're just fragile.

Yeah, those folks are ironically the most fragile of all.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Remember when a certain crowd of people liked a certain person because he "wasn't P.C."?
And then when you drop the PC bullshit and tell them what you actually think of them, and confront them on the fact that "polite" discourse and not confronting some things let things fester, suddenly they're all mad...
Maaaaaaannn... I wasn't expecting this thread to so easily get me into rant mode about stuff that isn't the movies. I guess part of it's because:
- idgaf anymore, see earlier in this comment
- I've been in threads with some of the people here for years, and see no need to bullshit
- Festivus just ended, but I've still got a lot to get off my chest
I'm still gonna try not to hijack the thread, though.

I think the most logical way for them to be introduced is through an Avengers meeting, or at least a meeting between Tony and T'Challa in Wakanda that Peter happens to be along for the ride for. Just from the immediate context that Peter is Spider-Man, a superhero her age, I think Shuri might be interested enough to make friends.
