Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Pym at least would probably still know more about Pym particles than her, given that he discovered them.

It'd be pretty hilarious if she did know more about them than he does. Recall that one page from the Mighty Avengers comics when Reed Richards (who is considered the smartest man in the world) claimed he knew more about Pym particles than Hank over a video chat.

Marvel Wiki's page on Pym Particles -- the page where Reed makes the claim is at the bottom.

Though if Shuri were the one saying that, Hank would probably be a tad more polite in his response.

Huh I’d think Pym would go slightly ballistic.

Let's not forget that MCU Hank is much more stable and less of a jerk than comics Hank. Which is telling considering MCU Hank is kind of a jerk.

Of course, comics Hank is the guy whose repressed misanthropy is so strong it spawned one of Marvel comics' worst monsters.

Hank wouldn't talk with her about Pym particles at all. He is too protective over them.

That's what the nanites in the Black Panther suit are. They're not Vibranium particles magnetically arranging themselves around T'Challa's body, they're a legion of microscopic Black Panthers all swarming around him arm-in-arm.

Pym: still calls him "Doctor" Richards.
Reed: ''Continues to be an asshole.

Also, MCU!Hank may be more stable, but he's also by general consensus insufferable to actually do science alongside, unless you're married to him.

The Pym family barring Janet are indeed pretty insufferable.

Hank & Hope are both terrible people, like father like daughter.

Here they all are.
All of those are people saying how much they would like Shuri and Bruce to interact. Note: interact, not mentally pwn.

Did anyone else who has seen Aquaman feel that Arthur's Queen Atlanna reminded them a lot of MCU!Janet at a certain point? Especially including the outfit at one point?

I find it amusing that when characters are obviously designed to fill certain tropes, like Insufferable Genius, people take them to task for filling those tropes. Like we would expect Shuri to be any other way when people come into her home and ask her help for something that she finds inferior.

The joke is well timed. Part of what sells it is that Banner is too mild-mannered to stand up for himself. Given more time, I'm sure they'd have come to a mutual appreciation for each other's skills, but that wasn't available. Shuri is like the tier 4 tech support supervisor that someone gives a broken computer to and realizes that they plugged in the power cord backwards.

There are future films in which she can learn humility. Like Black Panther 2.

I also find it fascinating that the discussion around this film shows how good a job the writers did in having each character's flaws, which have been established in prior movies, drive their failures in this one. It's almost as if this whole thing was planned from the beginning by some sort of, you know, author.

Shuri at Bruce: you are literally the most broken white boy. Why do you all keep coming here?

I just need a moment in infinity war when Shuri is being the mad scientist that she is and bossing tony and Bruce around

Bruce Banner: I've written out an algorithm we can use to neutralize the infinity stones from Than—

Shuri: Y'all still use chalk? I'm sorry I'm listening, I just. Really?

I really hope Shuri laughs in Bruce's face when he tries to act like his technology is advanced.

Shuri looking at Bruce Banner like "this the smartest colonizer y'all got?"

[up][up] Here for this. Like it's not even like outdoing them is hard for her, just tedious. But on the other hand, all these broken white boys she has to clean up after... too many and it just becomes another Magical Negro / Mammy mold.

[up]Not everyone. Also, there's heavy meritocracy to it, outside of limiting the right to challenge for the throne to select status. M'Baku called out their technological advancements for being overseen by a child, but that child maintains her position based on skill.

Side note: how strong are each Jabari that they can take on the Border tribe and their weapons?

And you plucked those out from the vast majority, which were "SHURI AND BRUCE! YAY!"

Also: yes, Queen Atlanna reminded me of Janet. Both were the mothers of the protagonists, long thought dead, but actually having survived in a harsh environment nobody thought they could survive in. The only difference is that in Ant-Man and the Wasp, they were hoping all along that Janet was alive (and confirmed a third of the way through) and the entire point of the film was rescuing her, while in Aquaman, they thought she was dead until near the end of the film and she was rescued along the way of completing their quest.

[up][up][up]Dude. Spoiler tags.

[up][up][up][up]T'Challa's still more interesting to me. He's implicitly no slouch in tech understanding (I doubt any of the court are), and he's got spy skill. But in addition to being rounded in the others' territory, he's also the best fighter, a good king, know's when he's wrong, and learns when to ask for help, and who.

Shuri is a bit of a snooty know-it-all at times, so it's pretty in-character for her and a funny line even if Banner didn't do anything to "deserve" it.

My only problem with that line is that I knew it would cause annoying arguments and divisiveness.

I'm curious if they'll find a way to adapt T'Challa & Shuri's issues from the comics.

Both were rather broken people, what with T'Challa putting up the front of an emotionless manipulating chess-master and Shuri being a staunch traditionalist and at one point exiling her brother.

It could set up good material for compelling drama if they really wanna do "Being a King will bend you".

I don't really see current MCU!Shuri being a traditionalist, or willingly exiling him, but such a story line under different circumstances could work.

Oh right. You've mentioned that before I think. Of course, I am too, but I'm the one who brought this up.

Once again, my issue was less what happened (Shuri talking smack) as it was who she said it too (as I'd have loved it even more if it was Tony). That's my issue with it. I love Shuri, she's awesome.
